The next day, Xiao Qingyin arrived as promised to help Song Qingshan with the surgery.
After having his meniscus removed, Song Qingshan's legs, from his thighs to his ankles, were completely wrapped in thick gauze.
"The gauze will be changed in three days. You should keep your legs flat during these days."
Xiao Qingyin gave her instructions.
As for how to solve her basic needs like eating, drinking, and relieving herself, that's not her concern.
Song Qingshan nodded: "I understand."
As Xiao Qingyin packed her medical kit and followed the steward out of the main courtyard, she encountered Song Qingshan's sister-in-law at the gate.
Xiao Qingyin expected the other party to make sarcastic remarks or cause a scene, but to her surprise, the other party seemed to have changed her personality and actually gave her a smile.
"Dr. Ye, how is my brother-in-law's leg?"
Xiao Qingyin didn't want to talk to her and only replied with four words: "No comment."
Yu Xin'er didn't react, but said with a hint of embarrassment, "I'm sorry, I was rash. You are a doctor, you can't just disclose a patient's condition. I should have asked the housekeeper."
Xiao Qingyin was a little surprised.
Has the sun risen in the west?
This person actually apologized.
She didn't say anything, just nodded and continued walking.
Yu Xin'er did not follow.
Three days later, Xiao Qingyin came to change Song Qingshan's bandages and saw Yu Xin'er again.
She stayed by Song Qingshan's side, serving him tea and water.
Xiao Qingyin removed the thick gauze and replaced it with thin gauze.
Yu Xin'er looked at Song Qingshan's knee, which was swollen like a steamed bun, and showed a look of heartache.
"Oh my god, brother-in-law, your knees are in such a state! Does it hurt a lot?"
Song Qingshan said calmly, "It doesn't hurt much."
"Brother-in-law, you are so good at enduring pain." Yu Xin'er said, half in amazement and half in heartache. "If it were me, I would have been crying and screaming in pain by now."
Song Qingshan chuckled: "You're a young girl."
Yu Xin'er blushed and whispered, "I'm seventeen already, I'm not young anymore..."
Xiao Qingyin glanced at her.
Yes, she's not young anymore; she's already starting to have romantic feelings.
However, it seems that Song Qingshan has no intention of remarrying his wife's younger sister.
The falling flowers are full of affection, but the flowing water is heartless.
She coughed lightly and instructed, "You will begin rehabilitation training today, which involves bending your leg. After you finish the exercise, apply ice."
"An ice pack?" Yu Xin'er exclaimed in surprise, "Where would we get ice in the middle of summer?"
Isn't this just reckless?
She almost started swearing.
Seeing that Song Qingshan's expression remained normal, he swallowed back the vicious words that were about to rise in his throat.
Xiao Qingyin smiled and said, "I have ice, I can send one portion over every day."
Song Qingshan didn't ask where her ice came from, and nodded, saying, "Okay, thank you for your help."
Yu Xin'er sensed the admiration in his words, and her eyes darkened.
Xiao Qingyin guided Song Qingshan in rehabilitation training.
His knees were so swollen that bending them felt like climbing to heaven.
He was sweating profusely from bending over, and his legs were only slightly bent.
Xiao Qingyin comforted her, "Take it slow. Make a little progress every day, and you'll be back to normal in half a month."
These words gave Song Qingshan immense confidence, and he looked at Xiao Qingyin gratefully.
Yu Xin'er, who was wiping his sweat with a handkerchief, looked at this look and her face darkened even more.
As the training session was about to end, Song Qingshan was about to instruct the steward to escort Xiao Qingyin out of the mansion when Yu Xin'er volunteered, "Brother-in-law, let me see her off. I have some questions about women's affairs that I'd like to ask Doctor Ye."
Song Qingshan did not immediately agree to her request, but instead cast an inquiring glance at Xiao Qingyin.
Xiao Qingyin wanted to know what kind of gourds Yu Xin'er was selling, so she nodded and said, "Anything is fine with me."
Yu Xin'er smiled and said, "Dr. Ye, please."
On their way out of the mansion, Yu Xin'er asked a lot of questions, but they weren't about herself or about women; they were about Xiao Qingyin.
Questions such as where she is from, why she came to South Vietnam, when she arrived, and how long she plans to stay.
Xiao Qingyin did not answer any of them.
He simply said, "This is my personal privacy, and I cannot disclose it."
Yu Xin'er's face stiffened.
After calming down, she said dejectedly, "Are you still angry with me? I really didn't mean it before. I was worried about my brother-in-law, that's why I got so agitated. I hope you can forgive me. I sincerely want to be friends with you."
As she spoke, she untied the purse from her waist and handed it to Xiao Qingyin.
“I’m asking you all this questions not for any other reason than to worry that you might not be used to the climate of southern Vietnam and that you might be affected by miasma. This betel nut pouch is something I made especially for you.”
"A betel nut pouch?"
"That's right."
Yu Xin'er opened her purse and poured out a small pinch of a mixture of crushed areca nuts and cardamom.
"Betel nut is a specialty of the South Island. It can cure miasma, freshen breath, and refresh the mind. We wealthy people in South Vietnam love to carry a betel nut pouch with them and chew it after meals."
"You probably haven't tried betel nut before, have you? Would you like to give it a try?"
Xiao Qingyin had indeed never tried betel nut.
But she knew all too well about this Group 1 carcinogen.
“Thank you for your kindness,” she smiled, “but I don’t eat betel nuts.”
"Why?"
Yu Xin'er clutched her purse tightly.
"Is it because you don't like me? So you don't even like the things I give you?"
"I just don't like betel nuts."
Xiao Qingyin replied.
If Yu Xin'er gave her mangoes, she might have accepted them.
Yu Xin'er bit her lip, reluctantly put away her purse, and didn't speak to Xiao Qingyin again.
When Xiao Qingyin returned to the inn, she found that there were people selling betel nuts at the entrance of the inn.
Yi Wu and the others were gathered around the stall, watching the vendor cut open the betel nuts, wrap them in lime and betel fruit, and then reach out to take them.
