The room suddenly fell silent.
Aunt Li gasped.
Chu Hong's hand also trembled violently, but he clenched it even tighter.
He looked at Chu Qingluan's pale profile, his amnesiac mind was blank, but his heart seemed to be gripped by something, sour and bitter.
He didn't understand where this emotion came from, he just knew that nothing must happen to his sister and the baby in her belly.
"You are suffering from both qi and blood deficiency, coupled with physical and mental exhaustion, and emotional ups and downs, so you fainted. It's a miracle that you managed to hold on until now." The doctor rambled on.
Chu Qingluan subconsciously raised her hand and touched her lower abdomen, a complicated look flashing in her eyes.
"Doctor, child..."
"Don't worry, I've already prescribed some medicine for you. From now on, you just need to take good care of yourself, avoid overwork, and avoid extreme joy or sorrow. The child will be fine."
After leaving the prescription, the old doctor also instructed: "I'll put the medicine here. Also, remember to make some chicken soup to nourish yourself, otherwise your body won't be able to bear it."
Aunt Li quickly responded, "Hey, hey, thank you very much, doctor. I'll go prepare it right away."
Aunt Li had never seen a girl in such a predicament in her life. She was stranded in a foreign land with her amnesiac brother, pregnant, and surrounded by bandits. How could she possibly survive?
After a while, only Chu Hong and Chu Qingluan were left in the room.
Chu Hong knelt beside the bed, his eyes fixed on her lower abdomen: "Sister...are you...ok?"
Chu Qingluan met his confused yet concerned look, and her heart softened.
"I'm fine."
"My sister is pregnant..." Chu Hong's voice was filled with confusion and bewilderment. "Where is the father of the child?"
The father of the child?
Chu Qingluan's heart suddenly ached, and Qin Yuan's face appeared in her mind again.
He was there to escort her and his life or death is still unknown.
She didn't dare to think about the worst outcome, and could only grit her teeth and tell herself that he must still be alive.
"He...will come find us."
Chu Hong didn't ask any more questions. He had already noticed that something was wrong with his sister's expression.
After a moment, he took a deep breath and said, "Sister, let's not leave for now."
"I will take good care of you and the baby in your belly until the father of the child is found."
His tone was more serious and persistent than ever before.
Chu Qingluan's heart softened, and then she shook her head: "We can't live here."
Otherwise it will implicate the villagers here.
Chu Hong frowned: "Those bandits that Hunter Zhang mentioned are looking for us, right?"
Chu Qingluan nodded slightly to show her agreement.
Chu Hong’s injury had not healed yet, so they couldn’t leave.
Chu Hong's injuries have just recovered a little, but she is pregnant, so it is even more unsuitable for her to travel long distances.
Assassins may come to search outside at any time.
She couldn't take the risk.
"Sister," Chu Hong suddenly said, "I heard from Aunt Li that there's an abandoned hunter's hut in the back mountain. We can live there. It's secluded and a bit far from the village... but the conditions are a bit simple."
Chu Qingluan nodded without hesitation: "Okay, let's go there."
She didn't care about the poor conditions. The most important thing at the moment was to avoid the assassins.
When Aunt Li learned they were leaving, she stamped her feet anxiously. "Oh, you little girl, you're pregnant and you're running off to the mountains. That shabby house doesn't even have a decent bed. How can you live there?"
Chu Qingluan held her rough hand and said gently, "Don't worry, auntie, we will take good care of ourselves."
Aunt Li couldn't persuade him, so she could only sigh, then turned around and went to the backyard to catch two of the fattest chickens, and stuffed a basket of eggs into Chu Hong's hand: "Here, this injury has just healed, you need to replenish it!"
Then, he started stuffing things into the bag, such as brown rice, dried bacon, oil lamps, wooden basins, etc.
It wasn't until Chu Hong's hands were full that he said with red eyes: "Take these first. I'll go to town early tomorrow morning and bring back two quilts for you."
Chu Hong took the things silently and thanked him in a low voice.
The next day, just after dawn, Uncle Li was waiting outside the yard in a ox cart.
Chu Qingluan changed into the coarse cloth dress given by Aunt Li, and casually tied up her long hair with a wooden hairpin. At first glance, she really looked like a country woman.
Chu Hong helped her sit on the ox cart, and he sat beside the shaft, looking around vigilantly.
The ox cart slowly drove out of the village and rolled over the muddy mountain road.
The morning mist was thick, and the mountains in the distance were looming.
An hour later, Uncle Li stopped in front of a secluded valley. After pushing aside the dense bushes, a simple wooden house came into view.
The thatch on the roof is a bit sparse, and the wooden walls have become a bit crooked due to years of disrepair, but overall it is still quite solid.
"Although this house is a little run-down, it's no problem keeping us out of the wind and rain," Uncle Li said as he helped unload the luggage. "Remember to light fewer fires on weekdays, so as not to cause unnecessary trouble."
Chu Qingluan nodded in thanks and watched Uncle Li's ox cart disappear in the morning mist.
“Squeak!”
The wooden door was opened, and a lot of dust accumulated inside, flying in the air.
Chu Hong covered his sleeves and brought out a stool from the house and placed it in the yard. "Sister, sit here and rest for a while. I'll clean up the house first."
“Hey, you…”
Without waiting for Chu Qingluan to speak, Chu Hong rushed into the house again and began to clean up quickly, clearing the cobwebs in the corner and making a simple bed with hay.
He did all this with great skill, as if he had done it many times before.
Chu Qingluan couldn't help but be stunned.
She knew that Chu Hong was not favored by his father when he was a child, but in the palace, he would not have to do these menial tasks.
