You stole my things!
Inside the car, Shen Yanshu glanced at the man intentionally or unintentionally. Seeing him sitting upright in the passenger seat, he looked natural, with a relaxed demeanor of someone who was used to being served. He couldn't help but wonder who this man was.
Seeing him turn his head to look at him, Shen Yanshu adjusted his expression and pretended nothing had happened.
After a while, Shen Yanshu could still sense Su Bai's gaze.
"Do you mind if I open the window?" Shen Yanshu asked.
She felt a little hot, and turning on the air conditioner was no use, so she needed some fresh air.
Su Bai said, "I don't mind."
As the car window lowered, the wind blew in, gently blowing Su Bai's hair. He rested his arms on the car and tilted his head to look out the window.
Shen Yanshu felt that there was a scent of pine in the air, which should be from Su Bai, cold and gentle.
The scent of bitter orange blossom lingered in Su Bai's nose. Even though it was very faint, Su Bai could still smell it. He remembered the same scent of the sleeping oil his mother had given him. It was very pleasant. The woman was a good driver, and he was very sensitive to her gaze. He had been stared at like this since he was a child, so it was hard not to notice. But for the first time, he found it interesting, even a little cute.
"I haven't asked you yet, what's your last name?" Su Bai asked.
When he was a child, he spent the most time with his grandmother, who liked to tell him Chinese stories. As a result, he learned Chinese well and he still has a copy of "Journey to the West" on his bookshelf.
Shen Yanshu replied: "Shen, what about you?"
She didn't know Su Bai's background yet, so she didn't intend to reveal it completely.
Su Bai intertwined his fingers, tapped his index finger twice, and then replied, "My last name is Su."
The man's sweet voice plucked Shen Yanshu's heartstrings like a feather. Shen Yanshu couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Su is not a local, right?"
"no."
She thought Su Bai would ask where he was from or something like that to continue the conversation, but Su Bai's answer was too brief.
The air in the car suddenly became quiet, and she turned off the car music before Su Bai got in, which made it so awkward that she didn't know what to talk about.
"Ningcheng is beautiful. You can go for a walk if you have time."
Judging from Su Bai's outfit, Shen Yanshu thought he was here to make money, not to travel, but he had no words to talk about. He couldn't talk about the car accident just now.
"Yes, I've been here a few times before. Ningcheng is indeed very beautiful." Su Bai said, "My grandmother is from Ningcheng, and I have a very good impression of Ningcheng."
Su Bai usually doesn't talk about family matters with strangers, and he doesn't talk much about it with acquaintances, but he noticed Shen Yanshu's discomfort and started a conversation unconsciously.
"That's great. I can take more photos and send them to the elderly."
Su Bai hummed, and when they talked about Ningcheng's characteristics, the two of them started talking more. Shen Yanshu and Su Bai chatted happily, introducing the places she had visited to Su Bai one by one. Su Bai would occasionally smile and complain to her about which attractions were overpriced or boring.
The car drove into the venue, and a red carpet was laid out all the way to the main entrance. The venue was a European-style building, a champagne and white color scheme. Waiters in black uniforms stood at the door to greet the guests. Shen Yanshu got out of the car and tossed the car keys to the waiter to park the car.
Su Bai got out of the car, straightened his clothes, and said thank you: “Thank you, Miss Shen.”
"You're welcome." Shen Yanshu said, "I also want to thank Mr. Su for making my journey less boring."
"Me too. I had a very pleasant chat with Miss Shen."
Su Bai extended his hand to signal for them to come in, and the two of them followed the waiter into the auction hall.
This was Shen Yanshu's second time at the auction. Electronic screens displaying exhibit introductions and exchange rates hung on either side, and the bright white light illuminated the room like daylight. Shen Yanshu sat down at her seat, coincidentally in the same row as Su Bai. She felt something was amiss, but couldn't quite place it.
After a series of processes and the first few exhibits, Shen Yanshu noticed that Su Bai didn't move at all. He just crossed his legs and folded his hands behind his back. He didn't look like he was here for the auction, but rather like he was here to visit a museum.
"Next is item No. 29, the original handwritten manuscript of Floyd[1], with a starting price of 5 million."
Finally, when he got what he thought of, Shen Yanshu raised his sign first.
"5.2 million, 5.5 million, 5.8 million, 5.8 million..."
Shen Yanshu put down the cards and looked at Su Bai unconsciously, and found that Su Bai was also looking at her. He leaned forward and didn't have time to retract his arm.
Shen Yanshu looked at him and thought that this man really didn't appreciate any favors.
She has been following her father in the business world since she was a child, and selling favors is the most common thing, but she doesn't like this. Favors become commodities after being bought and sold, and their original meaning has been lost.
Because of this, she became a little more curious about Su Bai.
She also wants this collection, so whoever offers the highest price gets it.
But she didn't expect that Su Bai would directly raise the price fivefold. Even if Shen Yanshu liked this thing very much, it was beyond her psychological expectations, so there was no need to pay for it.
Su Bai noticed that Shen Yanshu stopped her hand and felt a little guilty. He thought that he would have a chance to apologize to her later.
The auctioneer hammered down the item and it became Su Bai's.
Shen Yanshu felt a little unlucky and even began to regret giving Su Bai a ride just for her beauty, leaving him exposed to the cold wind on the highway. She had already brought this thing home beautifully.
Shen Yanshu left the auction house. Some people around her recognized her. It was common to say a few polite words and make friends in the business world. Shen Yanshu talked to several company managers and a few acquaintances.
When Su Bai followed him out, he saw this scene: the woman was wearing a simple white shirt and casual pants, socializing with people with ease. For a moment, he even forgot why he came out.
Shen Yanshu had actually seen Su Bai a long time ago, but she didn't want to pay attention.
When she arrived at the garage, she saw Su Bai standing in front of her car from a distance.
"Miss Shen." He took the initiative to come up and talk.
Shen Yanshu was not very happy to see Su Bai now, and even felt that he was a little annoying.
She nodded and prepared to open the car door and get in.
Su Bai walked forward and pressed the car door. He was too tall and cast Shen Yanshu into shadow.
Shen Yanshu looked up, unhappy: "What are you doing?"
Su Bai looked into Shen Yanshu's eyes, and an unknown bitter feeling welled up in his heart. He withdrew his hand and stood still.
"I want to apologize to you. This was not my intention." Su Bai said.
He needed this thing, but it was such a coincidence that if Shen Yanshu wanted something else, he could spend some money to buy it and give it to her, but Shen Yanshu only wanted this, the same goal as him.
He knew the principle of being grateful for what one has received, but compared to getting in touch with the Shen family, this favor was nothing. The choice was easy to make. He had made so many choices, and this one was no different.
But this was the first time he apologized for the choice he made.
They were so close that Shen Yanshu could clearly smell the scent on Su Bai.
She distanced herself from Su Bai and said in a neutral voice, "It's okay. The highest bidder wins."
"If possible, can you give me a chance to make amends?"
"No need. You don't need to apologize for what happened today. I wish you a happy time in Ningcheng."
Hearing this, Su Bai no longer had any need to stop her. She didn't give him a chance. Of course, why should she give him a chance?
He made room for Shen Yanshu, "Ms. Shen."
Shen Yanshu saw him standing at the door, showing no intention of leaving, and his secretary hadn't come to pick him up. Before coming, she had thought that if no one was picking up Su Bai, she would be willing to give him a ride. Whether she had a good impression of Su Bai or was just trying to help him, she was willing to be his driver again.
"Is there anything else?" Shen Yanshu said lightly.
"No." Su Bai hesitated, "Have a nice trip."
Shen Yanshu hummed, without any strong emotion, and drove away.
Su Bai watched the black Mercedes drive out of the garage and disappear from his sight. He didn't come back to his senses until Guan Cheng called him.
"What are you thinking about?" Guan Cheng looked at his boss who had a melancholy look on his face, not knowing what was going on.
"Nothing." Su Bai sat in the back seat, emotionless.
"The items have been handed over and will be delivered to your residence tomorrow night."
"Tomorrow morning." Su Bai said.
"yes."
On Riverside Road, Shen Yanshu parked his car in a curbside spot, crossed the sidewalk, and leaned against the stone railing, lost in thought. The tall buildings along the river were lit up, large screens looping celebrity advertisements and promotional slogans, and people were coming and going.
Although she didn't like the philosopher very much, such manuscripts were rare after all. She was unhappy about having her favorite things snatched away, and the most important thing was that the person who stole it brought it with him, which made her even more unhappy.
It's really "good intentions lead to bad consequences".
The phone rang, Shen Yanshu picked it up and said, "Hello, Mom."
"Xiaoshu, when will you come home?" A gentle female voice came from the other side.
"It's coming soon." Shen Yanshu cleared his throat and said.
"I heard from the secretary that we'll sell it next time we see it. Don't be sad."
Shen Yanshu was surprised at his mother's speed, but when he thought about it carefully, it had always been like this.
She heard her father come over and ask, "Or I can find a buyer and buy it back for you."
Shen Yanshu was amused by her father's words. Her parents had always been like this since she was a child, wanting to give her the best of everything. As long as she asked for something, they would basically give it to her, except for the stars and the moon.
"Dad, forget it. The other party really wants it, but you are still forcing him to buy it." Shen Yanshu said.
Hearing that their daughter's mood had improved, they were relieved: "On your birthday, we will give you other gifts."
"Okay." Shen Yanshu hung up the phone and drove home. She had been living with her parents for the past few days. After all, she was often abroad and hadn't spent enough time with them.
When Shen Yanshu came in, they were still waiting for her in the living room.
She was about to call for help when she saw her father with his finger to his lips, signaling her to shut up. It turned out that her mother had fallen asleep leaning against him.
"Go to bed quickly." said the father softly.
"Where's Mom?" Shen Yanshu said, and the two of them spoke in low voices like thieves.
"I'll carry her back later." Shen Xing said.
Shen Yanshu made an OK gesture and slipped back into the room.
After a while, Shen Xing picked up his wife and walked towards the room.
Ming Wan woke up in a daze: "Is Xiaoshu back?"
"I'm back. I didn't call you because you were sleeping so soundly."
Ming Wan smiled and said, "It's okay, wake me up next time."
Then she fell asleep in Shen Xing's arms.
