After hearing Yi An's heartfelt confession, Lin Hui was in an exceptionally good mood. Humming a little tune, she got out of the car and walked towards the Lin family home.
Halfway there, a person got out of a car next to her and blocked her way.
"Are you Miss Lin Huilin?"
Lin Hui looked at the person in front of her warily, and subconsciously held her bag in front of her chest.
"Who are you? What do you want? Let me tell you, if I shout, everyone in my family will come out!"
Her threats had no effect whatsoever.
"Ms. Lin, Mr. Meng invites you in."
The man gestured "please" to the car parked behind him.
Lin Hui looked in that direction and could vaguely see the figures of people sitting inside the car through the window.
She tentatively stepped forward, looking questioningly at the blurry figure inside.
Meng Jie, who was sitting inside, shifted slightly, and the car window began to slowly roll down.
When Lin Hui saw Meng Jie, she couldn't help but be surprised for a moment, but quickly returned to normal.
She cleared her throat and tried to speak normally, "Oh, it's Aunt Meng. What can I do for you?"
Her voice trembled involuntarily, carrying a hint of timidity.
Meng Jie glanced over indifferently, said nothing, but pointed to the seat next to her with her finger.
Lin Hui instantly understood what she meant, but she still felt a little timid. She wanted to refuse Meng Jie's kindness, but when she saw her eyes, she was too frightened to say anything.
Lin Huiqiang pretended to be fearless and started walking towards the other car door, but every step he took felt weak and unsteady.
She was afraid that Meng Jie had found out about her lawsuit and would come to threaten her with something.
She took a deep breath, opened the car door, and got in.
“Aunt Meng, please tell me what it is as soon as possible. You are a very busy person, and I have been quite busy lately, so I won’t take up any more of your time.”
The more she said that, the slower Meng Jie spoke.
Meng Jie turned her head, looked her over carefully, and asked with a half-smile, "Huihui, what have you been busy with lately?"
Hearing this unexpectedly intimate address, Lin Hui's heart skipped a beat, and she even forgot to breathe.
She immediately changed her words: "If Aunt Meng isn't busy, why don't you come to my house for a visit? My mother is home, and she's been talking about you for a long time."
Despite her complete 180-degree turn, Meng Jie remained unchanged.
When she stopped speaking, the air inside the car became completely silent and oppressive.
Lin Hui didn't dare to breathe, feeling suffocated as if a piece of cotton was stuck in her chest.
She could no longer bear this silent torment and spoke again: "Aunt Meng."
As she spoke, Meng Jie also spoke.
"I came here this time for no other reason than to take you and Xiaobao home."
Lin Hui froze on the spot, pondering the meaning of the word "go home" in her words, as if she was so stunned that she couldn't understand it at all.
"Why?" she blurted out.
"Does this need a reason?" Meng Jie immediately retorted, causing Lin Hui to panic again.
She hurriedly explained, "Aunt Meng, that's not what I meant. I just don't quite understand. Don't you not like me very much?"
"I'm just strict with you, it doesn't mean I don't like you."
Meng Jie's simple explanation left Lin Hui feeling flattered.
She noticed Meng Jie tapping the back of her hand with her fingers, realizing that she seemed to have something to say, so she wisely chose to remain silent.
Meng Jie paused for a moment before slowly speaking again: "Let me be frank with you, I dislike that woman named Su Yan even more than you. A daughter-in-law of the Yi family can be without talent, but she cannot be without virtue. She stirred up trouble between Yi An and me, making us irreconcilable enemies today. Do you think I would let her marry into the Yi family so easily?"
Lin Hui glanced at Meng Jie furtively and saw that her face was full of coldness. She finally felt relieved and began to complain to Meng Jie.
“Aunt Meng, to be honest, I’ve disliked Su Yan for a long time too. I don’t know what she says to Brother An all day long, which makes Brother An and me more and more distant. He’s even willing to give up Xiao Bao for her. Tell me, isn’t a woman like that a source of trouble?”
As Meng Jie listened to her grow increasingly indignant, as if she were being used as a dumping ground for negative emotions, a flash of dissatisfaction quickly crossed her eyes.
She pulled out an invitation and handed it over directly.
Lin Hui was stunned, forgetting to say what she had said earlier when she was complaining.
"What's this?"
Meng Jie: "I'm sending you an invitation to my birthday party the day after tomorrow, inviting you to attend as the future daughter-in-law of the Yi family."
Lin Hui was immediately startled by these words, her face filled with fear, and she didn't even dare to take the invitation.
"Aunt Meng, this isn't a good idea. What if Brother An...?"
Without thinking, Meng Jie interrupted her, "My decision is not one I can allow him to overturn."
Meng Jie shoved the invitation into her arms and coldly dismissed her: "Get out of the car. Remember to dress elegantly that day and act like the future daughter-in-law of the Yi family."
Lin Hui nodded hurriedly, feeling flattered, and stepped out of the car with the invitation in her hand.
Goodbye, Aunt Meng.
She stood by the car, bowing and scraping as she watched Meng Jie's car disappear from sight.
Lin Hui almost burst out laughing as she held the invitation.
She excitedly kissed the invitation, exclaiming, "I never expected my 'cutting off the enemy' move to be so effective! Even Meng Jie is scared!"
Lin Hui hummed a little tune as she entered the Lin family home.
Mrs. Lin came out, peeling orange segments. Upon seeing her smiling face, she immediately approached her with a cheerful smile.
"What's making you so happy?"
Lin Hui smiled broadly and took her arm. "Mom, let me tell you, I met Aunt Meng today. She invited me to her birthday party as the future daughter-in-law of the Yi family!"
Upon hearing this, Madam Lin was immediately delighted.
"Really? That's wonderful! Huihui, you've endured so many years, and you've finally made it!"
Lin Hui raised her head smugly, "It's no wonder Su Yan is stupid. She broke up with Brother An over a child and offended Aunt Meng."
Overjoyed, Madam Lin paid no attention to anyone else and turned Lin Hui around.
"Huihui, stop talking about those unworthy people! After you marry into the Yi family, I will be Yi An's mother-in-law. Then I'll see who dares to laugh at our family for being nouveau riche!"
She smiled and put her arm around Lin Hui, whispering in her ear, "Huihui, you mustn't forget your roots after marrying into the Lin family! You must help your father with his business, understand?"
Lin Hui patted her shoulder reassuringly, putting her mind at ease.
"Don't worry, Mom! I'm confident that my family is doing well, which gives me more influence in the Yi family. I know that much."
The mother and daughter exchanged a glance and burst into laughter simultaneously, their laughter so loud it made them tremble and they looked so smug.
