Chapter 4 Pulse Diagnosis and Treatment?
In the dormitory of the Fashion Institute, Su Nian went upstairs and found that all three roommates were there, which was a rare sight.
The sunlight slanted in through the gaps in the curtains, drawing a golden dividing line on the floor, as if dividing the dormitory into two worlds.
"Niannian, are you okay?" Zhang Qiuyan put down the book in her hand, her voice as soft as a feather falling to the ground.
Her eyes were filled with sincere concern as she looked at Su Nian. Obviously, everyone had seen what happened downstairs just now.
"Zhang Qiuyan, I've already been heartbroken, how can I possibly be okay? I'm afraid your kindness will be taken for granted!"
Liu Ying crossed her legs, her nail polish brush painting a glaring red on her fingertips. "Some people appear calm and composed on the surface, but who knows how many pillows they've soaked with tears behind their backs."
"That's right," Zhou Xiaomeng replied sarcastically, fiddling with her newly permed hair in the mirror. "I'm mentally strong, I don't need your comfort!"
Su Nian stood quietly at the door, the sunlight cast a long shadow behind her.
She suddenly felt that these words were like a pair of blunt scissors, trying to cut her dignity into pieces, but she didn't know that she had already sewn herself into an invulnerable armor.
"I'm fine, Qiuyan."
Su Nian gently patted Zhang Qiuyan's shoulder, the corner of her mouth raised a perfect arc, "By the way, my mother asked me to take you back to dinner next week. She said she hasn't seen you in a long time."
Zhang Qiuyan's eyes instantly turned red.
In this cold dormitory, the warmth Su Nian gave her was like a cotton coat in the cold winter, wrapping up all her fragility.
Last winter vacation, when she was worried about the living expenses for the next semester, it was Su's mother who specially asked her to go to the tailor shop to help. Not only did she give her a generous salary, she also secretly gave her a new dress that she had sewn by herself.
"Yes, Auntie always thinks of me." Zhang Qiuyan's voice was a little choked up. She lowered her head to hide her red eyes. "Thank Auntie for me."
Liu Ying and Zhou Xiaomeng exchanged disdainful glances, but no one spoke again.
The sun gradually set in the west, and the dormitory fell into an eerie silence.
Su Nian walked to the window and looked at Li Yuan's figure gradually disappearing downstairs. Suddenly, she understood a truth: some people are like old clothes that don't fit. No matter how reluctant you are, you have to learn to let go.
The next morning, the sunlight pierced through the clouds like a sharp sword, but it could not penetrate the gazes glued to Su Nian's back.
In the corridor, whispers were like countless ants crawling along her back.
"Look, that's her..."
"I heard that Senior Li Yuan already..."
"Pretending to be quite noble..."
Zhang Qiuyan was like a female cat with its fur standing on end, scanning the surroundings sharply, as if she wanted to build a protective wall around Su Nian with her eyes.
Su Nian simply straightened her back, letting the gossip slide off her body like rain. She had long since learned how to sew a protective jacket for herself. Yes! She was immune to all poisons.
As soon as the bell rang, a group of girls blocked the classroom door.
The leading girl, wearing bright red lipstick and a sardonic smile, said, "Hey, isn't this our Miss 'Clear Soup Water'?"
"Senior Li was really blind at the beginning," the girl wearing glasses next to him pushed the frames of her glasses, "luckily he woke up early." Her tone was as if she was discussing a discounted out-of-season clothing.
The red-lipped girl feigned regret as she shook her head. "Su Nian, just be happy. After all, you had a relationship with Senior Li, so it wasn't a loss."
She looked Su Nian up and down, her eyes as if she was evaluating a second-hand commodity, "After all, someone like you..."
The sunlight shone through the glass window, casting a bright band of light at Su Nian's feet.
She suddenly remembered what her mother often said: Some people are like cheap sequins, sparkling from a distance, but full of frayed edges when you look closely.
"Everyone, wake up. No matter how you attack me or belittle me, your good senior will never even look at you." Su Nian's voice was as calm as a pool of deep water, but it made the noisy corridor quiet in an instant.
"Are you done?" She raised her chin slightly. "If you're done, please move aside. The sun's shining brightly. Let's all go out and get some sun. You're too—too gloomy."
The crowd unconsciously made way for them. Su Nian walked calmly past, arm in arm with Zhang Qiuyan. She heard unwilling grumblings from behind, but she no longer had the courage to catch up.
When she turned the corner of the corridor, a sycamore leaf happened to fall on her shoulder, as if fate had gently patted her shoulder.
Before going to bed at night, my phone vibrated. It was a message from Lin Feier: Nian Nian, Professor Si asked me after class today. I was so excited. He asked me on his own initiative. Hahahaha——
Su Nian's heart tightened: What does this mean? By the way, your smile is so evil!
Lin Feier: He noticed that you looked unwell that day, so he asked my friend, that is, you, if you were feeling unwell.
Su Nian's fingers froze on the screen, her heart skipping a beat. He asked about her? Why? Did he recognize her? Countless questions flooded her mind.
Lin Feier sent another message: I said you might have had a little heatstroke that day. Professor Si is really nice. He also said that he would take your pulse and prescribe some medicine for you when he has the chance.
Su Nian replied with trembling fingers: No, really, thank him for me.
She turned off her phone and rested her forehead on the cool bed rail.
What was that man trying to do? Did he really recognize her, or was he just being kind?
We are all adults now, so let’s just forget about that ridiculous night!
Tonight is destined to be another sleepless night...
Su Nian spent the next few days in a daze, feeling like she had planted a bomb for herself that day, hoping it would be a dud.
On Friday night, when Su Nian brought Zhang Qiuyan home, the aroma wafting from the kitchen made her stomach suddenly shudder.
"Hello, Aunt Su!" Zhang Qiuyan's voice was as clear as a wind chime.
"Qiuyan is here. Go wash your hands first and then we'll have dinner." Ms. Su Hong poked her head out of the kitchen, her eyes falling on her daughter's pale face.
The pork rib soup stewing in the casserole was bubbling, but the aroma made Su Nian's throat tighten - these days, the smell of meat was always like a hook, pulling at her stomach.
Su Nian hid in the bathroom as if escaping.
The girl in the mirror had a faint shadow under her eyes, as if they had been gently brushed with a brush. She scooped up a handful of cold water and splashed it on her face, and droplets of water dripped down her chin like silent tears.
Lately I have been feeling like a piece of cloth wilted in the sun.
"Back off! Back off! Back off! Don't let these crappy things affect me anymore!" she said to herself.
At the dinner table, Ms. Su Hong's chopsticks moved back and forth between her daughter's and Qiuyan's bowls. "Qiuyan, eat more. Nian Nian too, why are you losing weight again?"
Her eyes were like the most precise tailor's ruler, measuring every inch of her daughter's weight loss.
