Chapter 43 Hot Potato
The bustle of Su Hong's home still permeated the air.
The midday sun lazily streamed over the dining table, the leftovers on the plates were still steaming, and the open photo album on the coffee table stopped at the sweetest page.
Listening to the laughter in the room, Su Nian suddenly felt that this was the life she wanted most in her life - stable, lively, and with someone by her side who also happened to love her.
Si Yan picked up a plump strawberry, deftly twisted the stem with his fingertips, and gently passed it to Su Nian's lips: "Come with me to the clinic later, and then go directly to the old house in the evening."
"Hmm." Su Nian tilted her head slightly, holding the sweet taste in her mouth. The juice instantly exploded on the tip of her tongue. She squinted her eyes and smiled. The sunlight slanted through the gauze window and fell on their clasped hands. The broken light reflected by the ring was like crushed stars, scattering down.
After lunch, everyone said goodbye with a smile.
Si Yan asked Su Nian to pack a few changes of clothes: "If it's too late, I won't be back."
Su Hong came over cheerfully to help, muttering as she folded clothes, "Yes, yes, once you're married you're a family. It'll make Mom feel at ease if someone loves you. You two should discuss things and live a good life."
She had already made up her mind that it was a great joy for her daughter to find such a home, better than anything else.
Su Hong carefully assembled the shantung silk skirt she had hurriedly made for Zhang Minghua. The material draped smoothly, with a subtle, matte sheen. It was the pattern Zhang Minghua had chosen the last time he visited the shop. As for the other two autumn outfits, they would have to wait a while longer for completion.
Su Nian remembered something and turned around to take out the navy blue silk home clothes she had sewn for Si Yan, as well as the skirt she had made for Li Jiawei last time, and put them together in her bag.
"The last time I went to the old house, I didn't have time to measure my grandparents' sizes. There's no sign of the clothes yet. They must be getting anxious waiting." Su Nian pursed her lips with some self-blame.
Si Yan held her hand, gently pinched her palm with his fingertips, and said in a gentle voice: "What they want most is for us to get married. These are all things for the future, there is no rush."
It was already two o'clock in the afternoon when we arrived at Jishiditang.
As soon as the car stopped, Lin Feier, who had hitched a ride, rushed down with her bag in hand like a gust of wind, and shouted without looking back: "I'm late for work, I'm leaving first, you guys chat slowly!" She looked like she was afraid that if she was a step late, she would be fed a mouthful of dog food.
Si Yan unbuckled his seat belt and turned his head to look at Su Nian, a smile in his eyes: "Let's go."
Chen Ran sat in the car and lowered the window half an inch. The hot wind brought in the noise from the street corner, making him feel upset.
After leaving the tailor shop, he felt depressed for a while and found a random restaurant to have lunch. Thinking that Su Hong's house must be bustling with activity, and that he was alone, nothing he ate tasted good. He had only one thought in his mind: he had to find his daughter as soon as possible.
Just as he was about to return to the company, he received a message from his assistant: Su Nian's marriage partner is called Si Yan, who teaches at Jiangcheng University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is already a professor at a young age. He comes from a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and his family has opened several traditional Chinese medicine clinics, the famous Jishidiang being one of them.
The words on the screen pricked his eyes like needles, and his fingertips tapped the steering wheel intermittently.
"Traditional Chinese Medicine?" Chen Ran sneered and muttered to himself, with undisguised contempt in the ending tone. His fingertips clenched the phone case so hard that several deep white marks were left on the plastic edge.
He wanted to see for himself what kind of ability Si Yan had to dare to marry his precious daughter.
At Jishitang, Si Yan, who was prescribing medicine for a patient, sneezed for no apparent reason. He paused, wondering who was targeting him.
When Si Yan brought Su Nian to the Si family's old house, the family members had already gathered together, waiting for them.
Seeing the two of them walk in together, Li Jiawei quickly rushed forward like a little butterfly, holding Su Nian's arm and calling out crisply: "Sister-in-law, you are finally back. My grandparents have been missing you all day."
"Niannian, come and sit down!" Si Yuqing also greeted her warmly.
"Hello, auntie!" Su Nian had met Si Yuqing last time when she pretended to be Si Yan's girlfriend, and now she called her naturally and affectionately.
As soon as Su Nian sat down, Si Yuqing handed her a big, thick red envelope.
"My dear niece, the last time we met, we were in such a hurry that I didn't have time to prepare. I'm making up for it now."
Su Nian politely greeted the elders in the room one by one:
"Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, Mom..."
Especially the loud and clear "Dad, Mom", which made Si Guoqing and Zhang Minghua smile so hard that their eyes narrowed into slits, and the wrinkles on their faces were smoothed out, full of relief.
Starting with the old man, the elders handed over red envelopes one after another. Each one was big and bulgy, and felt heavy in the hands.
This was the first time Su Nian met Li Jiawei's father, Li Chengye. Si Yuqing quickly introduced him: "This is my uncle."
"Hello, uncle!"
"Okay, okay." Li Chengye smiled and handed over the red envelope he had prepared long ago.
Seeing Su Nian trying to refuse it somewhat embarrassedly, Si Yan beside her quickly took it and whispered to her, "Just take it if your uncle gives it to you."
After receiving this wave of red envelopes, Su Nian's hands could hardly hold them, and her heart felt warm and sweet.
She took out the skirt for Li Jiawei, and the little girl's eyes lit up instantly, and she almost jumped for joy.
Su Nian turned to the old man and the old lady again and said apologetically, "Grandpa, Grandma, I came here to measure your sizes. Please make the clothes quickly. There is no time to waste."
"Okay, okay, my dear granddaughter-in-law, we are not in a hurry. It is better for you two to be well than anything else." The old lady took Su Nian's hand and smiled from ear to ear.
Zhang Minghua loved the shantung silk skirt Su Hong made for her the moment she saw it. She pulled Su Nian and said, "Come on, Nian Nian, accompany me to try on some clothes."
Su Nian followed him into the room and saw Zhang Minghua take out an exquisite lacquer jewelry box from the closet. When he opened it, there were gold and jade inside, shining brightly. The box was full of treasures.
"Niannian, Mommy is giving this to you. These are the ones Mommy bought but never wore before, so keep them."
Su Nian acted as if she saw something hot potato, and quickly waved her hands and jumped up: "Mom, such a valuable thing, you keep it yourself, I can't take it."
She didn't come in to try on clothes at all, it was obvious that she had some "private collection" for her.
