Chapter 51 Temporary Family
Outside the colonoscopy examination room, Chen Ran was sitting on a bench while Fang Shuo was busy running around.
According to hospital regulations, if the colonoscopy involves polyp removal, the signature of the family member is required, but he has not seen his elderly mother in the south for many years. The fact that his mother forced Su Hong to leave was like a thorn in his heart that he could never pull out.
In fact, the old mother has long regretted her decision, and she always says that if she had let go, her son would not have ended up in his current state. But how can time be turned back?
After thinking for a moment, Chen Ran gave Fang Shuo Su Hong's phone number: "If you have anything... contact her."
The morning sun had just climbed onto the windowsill when Su Hong was stunned when she received a strange call.
"Ms. Su Hong? I'm Fang Shuo, Chen Ran's colleague. He's currently at the People's Hospital undergoing a colonoscopy. A couple of days ago, they found suspected intestinal polyps, and they might need surgery to remove them today. The doctor hopes a family member will be here to make the decision."
"But I'm not his family member." Su Hong tightened her grip on the phone.
"His family isn't in Jiangcheng. He specifically asked me to contact you before entering the examination room." Fang Shuo's voice was earnest. "If you're free, could you come over?"
Intestinal polyps? Su Hong's heart sank, vaguely remembering that this thing might turn out badly.
Who was she to him, anyway? Why did he have to ask her to make decisions about his illness? What did he mean by "his family wasn't in Jiangcheng"?
But Su Nian changed her mind and realized that they had known each other for a while, so she still felt uneasy. She grabbed her bag and quickly walked out the door.
In the hospital corridor, Fang Shuo recognized Su Hong immediately—this middle-aged woman had a beautiful figure and face, and her eyes and eyebrows showed the beauty of her youth. "Ms. Su Hong, right? I'm Fang Shuo."
"How is Chen Ran? How long has he been in there?" Su Hong asked anxiously.
"It's been almost half an hour. The doctor just came out and said he has multiple polyps and can only remove a portion today."
"Is this... serious?" Su Hong's voice was filled with worry.
Just as he finished speaking, Fang Shuo's phone rang. He answered the call, his face showing embarrassment. "Ms. Su, an important company meeting has been moved up to an earlier date, and I have to go on behalf of the chairman. Could you please wait here for a moment? Call me anytime if you need anything."
Seeing Fang Shuo's anxious look, Su Hong nodded helplessly: "Go ahead."
Watching Fang Shuo hurriedly leave, Su Hong suddenly felt absurd. What kind of family member was she?
A few minutes later, a doctor pushed the door open and asked, "Is Chen Ran's family here?"
Su Hong immediately went up to him: "Doctor, it's me." But in her heart she was shouting: Just a temporary guest appearance!
"The results of his colonoscopy are out. There is more than one polyp in his intestine. Only part of it was removed this time. It needs to be sent for pathological examination." The doctor said, showing her what was removed.
"Then what should we do next?" Su Hong asked hurriedly.
"Go to the ward and wait. The patient will be sent back soon."
"Which ward is this?"
The doctor glanced at her—how could a family member not even know the ward? Without saying anything more, he turned and went into the operating room.
Su Hong stood there, not knowing whether to laugh or cry: How could she have become a "family member" without knowing it? But where exactly was the ward?
She quickly called Fang Shuo and when she asked for the ward number, her tone was filled with a bit of helplessness and a mixture of laughter and tears.
When she found the ward, Chen Ran had already been sent back. He was lying on the bed receiving an IV drip, his eyes closed and motionless. It seemed that the anesthetic had not yet fully worn off. The doctor was waiting for his family.
When she came in, the doctor instructed, "The patient just woke up from the anesthesia, so the family should talk to him more. He will feel pain after the anesthesia wears off, but it will subside in three hours. He can only eat liquid food today."
After the doctor left, Su Hong sat down beside the bed and asked softly, "Are you okay?"
The person on the bed didn't respond.
"Can you hear me?" She raised her voice slightly. "If you don't answer me, I'll leave..."
"Don't go." Chen Ran's voice was as weak as a feather, floating over gently.
Su Hong breathed a sigh of relief: "How do you feel?"
"Pain." One word, with deep fatigue.
It hurts! Su Hong wanted to say this, but then thought it was inappropriate and said softly, "The doctor said it will hurt for a while, but it will slowly ease."
Chen Ran stopped talking and just looked at her with his eyes open.
Su Hong looked around the single room. The conditions were really good and she couldn't help but mutter to herself: Rich people really know how to enjoy life.
Chen Ran looked at her and sighed in his heart: Sister, I came here to suffer, not to enjoy myself.
The wind blew a corner of the curtain in the single-bed ward up, and the sunlight drew a swaying golden line on the floor. Su Hong looked at the medicine dripping from the IV tube and suddenly heard Chen Ran's hoarse voice:
"sorry."
She looked up and saw a tear slipping from the corner of his eye, sinking into the snow-white pillowcase. Twenty-two years had suddenly collapsed into a mere fraction of a second, and those carefully built walls had collapsed with a single "I'm sorry."
The sycamore leaves outside the window rustled, as if telling about the four seasons that had been missed over the years.
Su Hong ignored her and just said, "Don't let your imagination run wild. Just take good care of yourself."
Fang Shuo didn't come back until noon, so Su Hong had to go buy food for Chen Ran. The doctor said he could only eat liquid food. She turned to look at Chen Ran and asked, "Liquid food, what do you want to eat?"
Seeing that Chen Ran didn't respond after thinking for a while, she suggested "millet porridge, rice porridge, juice, water..."
"Millet porridge." Chen Ran muttered to himself, is water food?
Su Hong looked at the medicine in the infusion bottle. There was still more than half a bottle left. It was still too early to remove the needle, so she said, "I'm leaving then," and walked out of the ward.
When she reached the hospital entrance, Su Hong caught a glimpse of two familiar figures and called out, "Si Yan, Nian Nian."
Su Nian was walking out with Si Yan's arm around her. When she heard the voice, she turned around and her eyes lit up when she saw her mother. "Mom? Why are you here?"
Si Yan also stopped and looked at Su Hong gently, asking politely.
Su Hong's heart skipped a beat, and her fingertips subconsciously clenched the straps of her bag. How could she explain this? She couldn't just admit she was acting as a temporary family member here, could she? She replied vaguely, "Oh, an...acquaintance is in the hospital, so I came to see him."
"An acquaintance?" Su Nian blinked, her curiosity piqued. "Your old acquaintance in Jiangcheng, I don't think I've heard of anyone being hospitalized."
"He's an old friend. You met him a few times when you were a child, but you probably have forgotten him by now." Su Hong quickly made amends.
"Is it serious?" Su Nian asked, with genuine concern in her tone.
Su Hong took a half step to the side. "Nothing serious." She quickly changed the subject and looked her daughter up and down. "Did you have a smooth record? What did the doctor say?"
"Everything is fine!" Su Nian couldn't hide the smile on her face when she mentioned the baby in her belly. She reached out and held Si Yan's arm tightly. "I did several tests, and the doctor said the little guy is very healthy. He just told me to rest more recently."
Su Hong's heart was instantly drawn to her daughter's words. She reached out and gently touched Su Nian's belly, her tone as soft as cotton: "That's good, that's good. Drive slowly on the way back."
"Okay, Mom," Si Yan replied, then thought for a moment and said, "By the way, which ward is that acquaintance you mentioned staying in? Do you want Nian Nian and I to go say hello?"
"No, no, no!" Su Hong waved her hands quickly. "No, no, she just had a minor operation and needs to rest. Let's not disturb her." She was afraid that her daughter would ask more questions, so she quickly pushed Su Nian out. "Go back quickly. It's so hot out here. Don't stand at the hospital door."
Si Yan patted Su Nian's shoulder gently: "Since Mom's friend needs to rest, let's go and send Mom home."
"No, no, I have something else to do. You don't have to send me off. You can go back." Su Nian finally gave up and turned back to Su Hong before getting in the car, "Then be sure to call me when you're done!"
Watching the car slowly drive away, Su Hong finally breathed a sigh of relief.
