Chapter 55: Giving up treatment?
Su Hong's heart felt as heavy as if it were filled with lead.
The first time she called Chen Ran, there was only a monotonous "no answer" tone in the receiver; she gritted her teeth and called again, but the ringtone rang timidly for just half a second before it was abruptly cut off, followed by a cold busy tone with no room for maneuver.
Su Hong's heart suddenly skipped a beat: Oh no, something really is going to happen!
If the outcome was truly horrible, who could possibly endure it? But no matter how difficult it was to face, she had to grit her teeth and actively seek treatment… Her knuckles turned pale as she gripped the phone, her heart clenched with something.
She decided to go to the hospital to see Chen Ran.
At this moment, the atmosphere in the conference room on the top floor of Chen's Clothing Company was so serious that it could be squeezed out of ice.
Chairman Chen Ran presided over this important merger and acquisition meeting that affected the company's future direction. Everyone in the room held their breath, and even the rustling sound of pens scratching across paper was as clear as drums beating in their ears.
At this moment, a sudden cell phone ring came without warning, sounding particularly harsh in the silent conference room.
Everyone was stunned—who didn't know that Director Chen never let his phone ring during meetings? Chen Ran himself frowned, reaching for his phone and casually glancing at the screen. The corners of his mouth, which had been pursed for a moment, curved upwards almost imperceptibly, and a faint warmth flashed across his eyes, like the warm winter sun occasionally piercing through the clouds.
Everyone in the room jumped in shock. Director Chen...actually laughed?
The department manager who was reporting the plan suddenly got stuck and stopped subconsciously. The conference room instantly fell into an eerie silence, and even the air seemed to freeze.
Chen Ran seemed not to notice the strangeness of the crowd. He tapped the screen with his fingertips to turn off the ringtone first, but did not put the phone back into the drawer. He just casually placed it on the corner of the table, like a quiet coordinate.
But before the meeting could regain its rhythm, the phone vibrated again, and the screen lit up glaringly again.
He didn't hesitate this time and hung up with a click of his finger. He looked up at the stiff manager and his tone had returned to its usual calmness: "Go on."
The gears of the meeting started turning again, but a question mark was quietly hanging in everyone's mind.
On the other side, Su Hong didn't have time to think about it. She rushed into the hospital with a pounding heart. But when she opened the door of the ward, she saw only an empty bed. Her heart tightened, and she grabbed a passing nurse and asked, "Nurse, where is the patient in this ward?"
"Discharged." The nurse's voice was calm.
"Discharged from the hospital?" Su Hong felt a buzzing in her head, and a terrible thought popped up in her mind - could it be that... treatment was given up?
She slid half a step with her back against the cold wall, her heart as tangled as a crumpled ball of yarn.
That is their daughter's biological father. Even if they are not prepared to recognize Chen Ran, they still hope that he can live well.
Su Hong returned to the tailor shop in a very depressed mood. She thought all the way, what's the point of making more money? If your health is broken, everything is empty.
She remembered that Afen was not feeling well, so she decided to accompany her to Jishidiang in the afternoon to check it out, so as not to let it develop into a serious illness.
This is her first time here.
The lobby of Jishidiang TCM Clinic is filled with the faint aroma of Chinese medicine. The old wooden tables and chairs and the TCM classics hanging on the wall create a quiet and quaint atmosphere.
Su Hong asked Afen to sit on the bench and turned to go to the front desk to register. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Lin Feier walking out of a clinic.
Apparently, Lin Fei'er also saw her and came forward with a smile: "Aunt Su, are you here to see a Chinese doctor or to see Professor Si?"
"We came to see a Chinese doctor and also to see Si Yan—we wanted him to take Aunt Fen's pulse," Su Hong explained. "We didn't contact him beforehand, so we don't know if he's available today. If he's not, we can find another doctor."
Afen also came over at this time and said, "Let's go find Xiao Si. If it doesn't work, we can make another trip." After all, Su Nian had specifically instructed that they had to find Si Yan.
"Yes, Professor Si is here today." Lin Fei'er responded with a smile, "Please wait a moment, I'll go check it out."
When Lin Fei'er tiptoed into Si Yan's office, he was carefully taking an elderly man's pulse, his expression focused, unperturbed by the outside world. After he finished taking the pulse and while the elderly man was receiving the prescription, Lin Fei'er stepped forward and whispered, "Auntie Su is outside."
Si Yan nodded, a hint of understanding flashing across his eyes.
After seeing the old man off, Si Yan stood up and walked out of the clinic. He first went to the triage desk to understand the queue situation, and then walked towards Su Hong and the others.
"Mom, Aunt Fenn, you'll have to wait a moment. I have five other patients." His voice was gentle, steady, and apologetic. "You didn't even tell me you were coming."
"We're not in a hurry, you go ahead and do your thing." Su Hong waved her hand quickly.
"Sister Hong, look how steady Xiao Si is." Ah Fen leaned closer to her and sighed softly, "Nian Nian is so lucky."
Su Hong smiled but didn't respond. She recalled the first time she met Si Yan. She had secretly worried that he wasn't reliable because of the ridiculous incident. Now, it seemed that her daughter was quite lucky.
Soon, Si Yan finished seeing the patients in front and called them over.
"Mom, Aunt Fen, please sit down." Si Yan gestured for them to sit down at the examination table. "Who's going first?"
Afen pushed Su Hong and said, "Sister Hong, you go first."
Su Hong waved her hand: "I'm not feeling unwell, I just came here to accompany you."
Si Yan observed Su Hong's complexion calmly and said gently, "Mom, Chinese medicine emphasizes 'preventive treatment'. Even if you're not sick, you can still take measures to regulate your body. I see that you've been feeling a little irritable lately, haven't you?"
Su Hong looked up in surprise: "You can see all this?"
"You have a slight blue shadow under your eyes, and your tongue coating is pale." Si Yan explained in a professional tone, "Summer is prone to excessive heart fire. Let me take your pulse to see the specific situation."
As he spoke, Si Yan stretched out his hand and gently placed his fingers on Su Hong's pulse. The touch of his fingertips was gentle and steady.
He closed his eyes slightly, carefully feeling the beating of his pulse, his expression focused and serious.
After a while, Si Yan opened his eyes with a gentle smile on his face. He said, "Mom, apart from a little heart fire, there's nothing serious. However, if the heart fire is too strong in the summer and is not properly managed, it may affect your physical condition."
Su Hong couldn't help but admire Cheese Yan's observation skills. She held out her wrist for him to feel her pulse again and casually asked, "Where is Nian Nian today?"
"She's setting up her studio at home." Si Yan placed his fingers on Su Hong's pulse again, confirming it. He took her pulse intently, not missing even the slightest change. After a moment, he gently let go of Su Hong's hand and made a few more adjustments to the prescription.
"Mom, your pulse is generally stable, but you need to pay attention to your heart fire." Si Yan thought that the situation Su Nian was worried about was not there. He handed the prescription to Su Hong and explained patiently, "I'll prescribe a prescription to soothe the liver and relieve depression, but in the end, you still have to keep a good mood. Some things are better to say out loud than to keep them in your heart."
Su Hong took the prescription, her fingertips touching the coolness of the paper, and a strange feeling welled up in her heart. Thinking of Chen Ran's troubles these days and the lingering memories of the past, she felt a mess inside. She subconsciously touched her chest and forced a smile: "At my age, everyone has their own worries."
Ah Fen nodded as she listened, "That's right, Sister Hong, if you have anything to say, don't keep it to yourself. Just tell me."
Su Hong——These things cannot be said at all!
