Chapter 83 Are you... afraid of me?

Chapter 83 Are you... afraid of me?

Su Hong felt her face burning hot. She was so embarrassed that she wanted to find a hole to crawl into - this incident had really made her lose face for the rest of her life.

She never expected that these were actually bought by that old man Chen Ran!

But she had already unpacked it. Not only that, she had also used it. Not only that, she had even praised the mattress in her heart for being comfortable. Especially when she thought of the four-piece set in girly pink, Su Hong felt her face flush hard...

"Who told you to buy all these blindly?!" Su Hong shouted anxiously into the phone, her voice filled with anger and irritability, and a hint of panic that she herself didn't even realize.

"Didn't you keep saying yesterday how comfortable my mattress was?" Chen Ran's voice was calm, even with a hint of a smile.

"I was just saying it casually!" Su Hong slapped her mouth. Why did she insist on talking about the mattress? Wasn't it enough to say that the scenery outside her window was beautiful?

"It's just a mattress. It's no big deal. Don't take it personally." Chen Ran said casually, "Is the mattress heavy? Do you need me to change it for you?"

"No need!" Su Hong refused without thinking, raising her voice and adding, "How much is it? I'll transfer it to you!"

"Okay, you're getting more and more ridiculous. You don't even need to pay me." Chen Ran laughed out loud on the other end. "How about this? I can just come to your place for a few more meals in the future."

Su Hong listened to this and snorted in her heart - just say it, this old guy really has no good ideas!

After hanging up the phone, Su Hong stood there and started to wonder: Should I sleep on this neatly made new bed or not?

She paced into the living room and caught a glimpse of the empty cardboard box containing the mattress in the corner.

For some unknown reason, she picked up her phone and scanned the QR code on the box.

When Su Hong saw the price that popped up on the screen, she took a deep breath and her eyes widened - Wow, six figures!

She slapped her forehead in frustration. She had just been so careless about transferring money, but how could she afford such a price? Forget paying, even if she sold herself, she wouldn't be able to come up with enough!

Now, let alone looking forward to a good sleep, Su Hong was completely unable to sleep.

Si Yan drove Su Nian home. The night sky came in through the car window. Si Yan drove steadily, but Su Nian sat a little uncomfortably in the passenger seat.

Her fingertips repeatedly stroked the corner of her clothes. She looked up at the person next to her several times, swallowing the words that came to her lips - not only did she make him wait for nearly an hour because of her overtime, but the subtle displeasure in his tone when he was talking to Mr. Chen just now made her feel uneasy.

Finally, she mustered up the courage to speak softly, "Professor Si... From now on, I'll just go home by myself after get off work." Her voice trembled slightly, "It's a shame to trouble you to pick me up and drop me off every day. It takes up too much of your time." She believed in her heart that she was a burden to Si Yan.

Si Yan's hand holding the steering wheel paused slightly. He glanced sideways at Su Nian's lowered head, her soft hair hanging beside her cheek, hiding her uneasiness again and again.

A tenderness suddenly appeared in his eyes, and Si Yan slowed down his tone, feeling that he needed to have a good talk with this little girl.

He turned on the turn signal and parked the car steadily in the parking strip on the side of the road.

Si Yan turned around and looked at her seriously: "No matter how long you work overtime, I am willing to wait for you."

His eyes were calm and focused. "I'm just worried that you'll be tired. I'm worried that when I'm not around, you might not eat on time or feel unwell. I'm always thinking about you."

"But today... I made you wait for so long." Su Nian's voice became even lower, and her fingertips clenched the corner of her clothes tightly, almost pinching into her palm. "I feel very guilty, so from now on... I'll just take a taxi back by myself." She was determined to take the responsibility herself and didn't want to cause him any more trouble.

Si Yan looked at her cautious and treading on thin ice, and his heart was soft and bitter.

He raised his hand, and gently touched the top of her head with his warm palm, and asked tentatively: "Are you... afraid of me?"

Su Nian's shoulders trembled imperceptibly. Silence flowed for a few seconds like a tide before she uttered a mosquito-like "hmm." "A little. I'm afraid I might not do well and make you worry. I'm even more afraid...if anything happens to the baby, you'll blame me."

She sniffed, and when she raised her head, a thin layer of tears covered her eyes. "Professor Si, I know we are together because of the child. Don't worry, I will take good care of myself and will never let anything happen to the baby."

"My little fool." Si Yan was angry and amused. He reached out and gently rubbed her cheek, his tone full of helpless tenderness. "I've always been worried about you. I'm afraid that you'll be tired and hungry, and that you'll feel unwell but won't tell me."

He deliberately made his tone lighter, trying to dispel the haze in her heart: "Don't let your imagination run wild. It's late, what do you want to eat? Why don't we go home and cook? Let's eat outside first and then go back, okay?"

Su Nian was stunned for a moment, looking into the genuine tenderness in his eyes. That tenderness slowly flowed over her heart like warm water, and her tense shoulders unconsciously relaxed a little.

She replied softly, "Okay, as long as I'm healthy." Her well-behaved appearance made Si Yan feel even softer.

They chose a home-style restaurant with warm yellow lights and ordered a few light home-style dishes. Perhaps because he was still preoccupied with things, Su Nian had no appetite. He ate rice in small bites and put down his chopsticks before eating much.

When I returned to my home in Jinghuayuan, it was already late at night.

Su Nian took a shower first, and then went straight to bed.

When Si Yan came out of the shower, there was only a warm orange bedside lamp on in the bedroom. Under the light, she was curled up in a small ball on the side of the bed, with her back to him, and seemed to be fast asleep.

Si Yan lay down gently on the other side of the bed, and the slight sinking of the mattress did not seem to alarm her.

He stared at her huddled back for a moment, and could clearly feel the subtle and rapid rise and fall of her shoulders - she was not really asleep at all, she was clearly still thinking about what happened in the evening, and the knot in her heart had not been untied.

The next second, Si Yan stretched out his arms and gently pulled the person into his arms.

Su Nian's body stiffened slightly, like a little rabbit being touched, but she didn't dare to move, allowing him to hold her in his arms.

He rested his chin on the top of her head, which was lightly scented with shampoo. Through the thin pajamas, he could feel her warm skin. His tone was tender and unwavering: "You're not asleep yet, are you?"

Su Nian said nothing.

"Don't keep everything bottled up." Si Yan's voice was exceptionally clear in the quiet night, carrying a reassuring power. "I'm the man of this family. Taking care of you and shouldering the responsibility of this family are all my duties. You don't have to think of it as a bother, and there's no need to feel pressured."

He looked at the person in his arms with a serious expression, "Su Nian, do you know what I did during the hour I waited for you?"

Su Nian shook his head. "It must be boring to sit there and wait for me."

"I finished reading three papers, responded to five emails, and even conceived a new research topic." Si Yan suddenly laughed. "So, you are simply my efficiency catalyst."

Su Nian was amused and burst out laughing.

He paused, gently scratched her earlobe with his fingers, and softened his tone: "From now on, no matter what happens or what you think, you must tell me in time. Why should there be so many concerns between husband and wife? Don't keep your emotions until the next day, okay?"

The person in his arms finally moved. Su Nian slowly turned around and nuzzled his chest. His voice was muffled, with a hint of a soothed nasal tone: "I understand, Professor Si."

"Silly girl." Si Yan lowered his head and placed a soft kiss on her smooth forehead, like a feather brushing against her heart. He tightened his arms around her, completely protecting her in his embrace. "Go to sleep."

Su Nian closed her eyes, and the fresh scent of his shower gel lingered at the tip of her nose, mixed with his unique warm breath.

The heart that had been hanging in the air all night finally landed safely like a boat that had found a harbor.

She leaned closer into his arms, found the most comfortable position, and her breathing gradually became steady and long.
