Chapter 99: Su Nian Stays Overnight at Her Mother's House
Su Nian walked quickly along the sidewalk in her flat shoes. The sound of her heels hitting the ground revealed a sense of haste that she herself was not even aware of.
The evening breeze blew my hair across my cheeks, but it couldn't blow away the inexplicable irritability in my heart. It felt like something was blocking it, making me feel suffocated and uneasy.
She took out her cell phone, her fingertips hovering over the screen for a long time, wanting to send something to Fei'er, but finally turned off the screen silently.
What should I say? Should I tell her that Si Yanzheng is having dinner with that girl? Or should I just yell, "Sister, I need comfort right now?"
Forget it, it seems like I care so much!
Just as I was distracted, my phone suddenly vibrated and the words "Si Yan" popped up on the screen.
Su Nian's heart suddenly tightened, and her fingers gripping the phone tightened even more. She hesitated for a few seconds before swiping the answer button.
"Where?" The voice on the other end of the phone was still calm and gentle as always.
Su Nian took a deep breath and tried to make her tone sound natural: "I'm having dinner outside with my mom, what's wrong?"
"Just finished and am heading back. Do you want me to pick you up on the way?"
Su Nian paused, looked up at the unfamiliar street scenes around him, and thought of the scene behind the glass window. His throat tightened. "No need, I'll be back soon. You can go do your thing."
"Hmm?" Si Yan seemed to have heard something. "What's wrong with the voice? Are you feeling uncomfortable?"
"No, no, I'm just a little tired." Su Nian quickly found an excuse, "I'm hanging up now."
Without waiting for Si Yan's response, she hung up the phone in a hurry, and the stuffy feeling in her chest became even heavier.
Good man, he's clearly having dinner with someone, but he says he just finished? Is he too lazy to explain, or does he think there's no need to report? Ha, man.
Su Nian walked aimlessly for a long time until her phone rang again. It was Su Hong calling, "We're getting ready to go back. Where are you? Uncle Chen is here to pick you up."
If she hadn't seen what happened to Si Yan, she would have planned to take a taxi back to Jinghua Garden by herself, but now, she suddenly didn't want to go home and didn't want to go back to face Si Yan.
But...where can I go?
After all, I'm married now, and if I go back to my parents' home for no reason, my mother will definitely start asking me "a hundred thousand questions".
Su Nian stared at the street scene in a daze, and suddenly an idea popped into her mind: Perhaps, she should use the money she had on hand to buy a small house, so that she would at least have a space where she could be completely alone in the future.
After thinking about it, I realized that my destination tonight should be to go home with my mother.
Su Nian stopped in his tracks, looked up and around, feeling lost - where was this? It was so strange, like he had suddenly traveled through time!
She gathered herself and found a nearby landmark to report to. Not long after, Chen Ran's car was parked steadily by the roadside.
Su Hong was sitting in the passenger seat. When she saw her get in, her eyes immediately lit up with concern: "Why do you look so bad? Are you tired from shopping? You're pregnant now, you can't be so exhausted. You need to make sure you rest."
"Well, maybe I'm a little tired." Su Nian forced a smile, slumped back in the chair and closed his eyes pretending to be dead, for fear that they would see through his inner drama.
Chen Ran didn't ask any more questions, but just slowly started the car.
The carriage was very quiet. Su Hong occasionally spoke a few words to Chen Ran. Her tone was much more natural than at dinner, with a subtle familiarity.
Su Nian listened to their conversation, but her heart was in a mess. All she could see over and over again was the image of Si Yan and the girl sitting in the restaurant.
After a long while, Su Nian adjusted her breathing, tried to sound relaxed, and spoke with a hint of coquettishness: "Mom, I want to go back to your place and stay for a night today. I want to try out the expensive mattress that Uncle Chen gave you. How comfortable is it?"
"Okay." Su Hong smiled immediately, and the fine lines at the corners of her eyes showed warmth. "You should make it clear to Si Yan that you have a family now, and you need to discuss everything with him."
"Or... I'll buy you one too?" Chen Ran replied, his tone cautious and tentative.
"No need, Uncle Chen, I just came back to sleep in my mother's bed for one night!" Su Nian smiled and waved her hand.
Then she sent a message to Si Yan: My mother asked me to stay here with her tonight and not go home.
After a long while, Si Yan replied: Yes.
——Hey, man, will you go bankrupt if you say one more word?
Chen Ran sent the mother and daughter home. Although his face showed "I want to stay", he was too embarrassed to say it out loud, so he could only leave reluctantly.
As soon as Su Nian entered the bedroom, she threw herself on the bed and rolled over a few times, howling, "Wow! This mattress is so comfortable! It really feels different to sleep on RMB!"
Seeing her daughter's large movements, Su Hong was so frightened that she quickly grabbed her and said, "Grandpa, please jump more gently! Be careful, baby!"
After making a fuss for a while, Su Nian returned to her previous room.
Lying on the familiar bed, the moonlight outside the window slipped in through the gaps in the curtains, casting a thin strip of light on the floor. It was so quiet that I could hear my own heartbeat.
Not surprisingly, she suffered from insomnia.
No matter how hard she tried to close her eyes, the thoughts in her mind were like an unbreakable thread, tangling around and around.
She stared at the ceiling with her eyes open until she fell into a drowsy sleep in the second half of the night. The blurry and dazzling scene behind the glass window kept appearing in her dreams.
The next day, Su Nian slept very late and woke up with his head still feeling dizzy, as if filled with lead.
She struggled to get up, washed up and walked out of the room, and saw Chen Ran busy in the kitchen at a glance - this Mr. Chen, Uncle Chen, no, stepfather, why is he here again?
When he turned around, his mother was standing beside him helping him. They were whispering to each other and chuckled from time to time. The scene looked like an ordinary couple.
"Are you awake? Come and have breakfast. Uncle Chen made a lot of delicious food." Su Hong saw her first and greeted her with a smile, her eyes full of warmth. Su Nian stood there, a little dazed for a moment.
Chen Ran brought a bowl of steaming porridge to her and said in a gentle tone: "Try it and see if it suits your taste."
Su Nian sat down and took a sip. The refreshing taste of the porridge slid down her throat, and the haze in her heart seemed to dissipate a little. She raised her head and smiled at Chen Ran. "Thank you, Uncle Chen. It's delicious."
While eating, Su Hong looked at her several times, with a hint of hesitation in her eyes, as if she wanted to say something but couldn't.
Su Nian deliberately buried her head in drinking porridge. If her mother didn't say anything, she wouldn't ask and pretended not to see it.
After breakfast, Chen Ran said he had something to do at the company, so he went back first.
As soon as he left, Su Hong couldn't help but say, "Niannian, your Uncle Chen and I..."
"Mom, I know what you want to say." Su Nian raised her head and interrupted her, saying seriously, "Don't worry. I think Uncle Chen is a really good person. You can feel free to start your second spring in life. I fully support you!"
Su Hong was stunned for a moment, then smiled, a smile spreading from the corners of her eyes: "You kid..."
She looked at her daughter and sighed softly in her heart: Mom has more to say than this, forget it, I'll find a chance to tell her next time.
Si Yan from Jinghua Garden also didn't sleep well that night. His arms felt empty and he wasn't used to it at all.
He thought it was normal for Su Nian to occasionally go back to her parents' home to accompany her mother, and didn't think much about it.
Today he was going to the Jishitang Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic as usual. As he was leaving, his cell phone suddenly rang, and a clearly weak female voice came from the receiver:
"Brother, I feel a little unwell... Can you come over and take me to the hospital?"
Si Yan frowned slightly.
