Chapter 54 A Rushed Return
After returning home and taking a shower, Su Hong was about to lie down when her phone screen lit up. She clicked it open and saw a message from Chen Ran. It only had four words: "It hurts so much."
Su Hong's heart skipped a beat. What was going on?
She quickly sent a message back: "Then tell the doctor quickly, doesn't he say that the pain will gradually subside three hours after the operation?"
The other side replied immediately: "It's a stomachache, hungry."
"Huh?" Su Hong stared at the screen in surprise. "Can't you just order takeout?"
"I'm a patient, can I eat those things?"
Su Hong almost rolled her eyes at her phone - it turned out she had chosen one.
"But it's too late for me to do anything now. Besides, you won't be allowed into the hospital this late, right? Just bear with it for now."
"I can't stand it at all." Chen Ran's reply revealed an uncompromising stubbornness, just like a child asking for candy.
"Well... never mind. I'm scared of you. I can only send it to you tomorrow morning."
"It's a deal!"
Only after these words popped up did Su Hong finally realize what was happening—he'd gone all this way just waiting for her to say this. This old fox was calculating so well that the sound could be heard through the screen.
The next morning, at daybreak, Su Hong rushed to the market, wallet in hand. The morning market was bustling during the dog days of summer, with fresh vegetables dripping with dew and lively fish and shrimp bubbling in basins.
She was thinking about making something light and nourishing when she caught a glimpse of a wild black fish on a stall. Its dark scales were shining and it looked fresh.
"That's it," Su Hong thought. Blackfish soup is incredibly nourishing, perfect for post-surgery, replenishing energy. She bargained with the vendor for a bit, then hurried home, her heavy load of fish in hand.
Su Hong hurried home with the fish, donned an apron, and set to work. She scaled it, cut it into pieces, and pan-fried it until both sides were golden brown. Then she added water and let it simmer. Soon, the kitchen was filled with an alluring aroma. She picked out the fish and poured the milky white broth into a thermos.
When I arrived at the hospital and opened the ward door, I saw Chen Ran staring at the door with his eyes wide open. He looked like a golden retriever that had been hungry for three days and was waiting for its owner to feed it.
Su Hong rolled her eyes at him unhappily, put the thermos box on the table, opened the lid, and the aroma of the steaming black fish soup became even stronger.
She poured a bowl of soup and handed it to Chen Ran, "Drink it quickly, be careful it's hot." Chen Ran took the soup, blew on it gently, took a sip, and narrowed his eyes. "It's so delicious, this cooking skill is amazing!"
"Drink it yourself. I don't have time to stay here any longer. I have to go." Su Hong said decisively, picked up her bag and prepared to leave.
"Thank you!" Chen Ran's voice sounded behind him, with a hint of sincerity.
Su Hong paused, without looking back, but muttered to herself in her heart - please don't thank me, I didn't come here willingly, I'll be grateful if you don't bother me again!
Su Nian didn't go to the tailor shop today, but stayed at home in Jinghuayuan to finalize the studio matters.
The fashion designer was also quite adept at planning and layout. After a few seemingly casual sketches, her vision of the studio came to life on paper. Within half a morning, a detailed blueprint was ready.
As she put down her pen, sleepiness washed over her like a tide. After all, she was three months pregnant, so she was naturally sleepy. Su Nian yawned profusely, forgetting to take her phone from the sofa, and went straight upstairs to her room to catch up on some sleep.
At Jishiditang, Si Yan took a break from his busy schedule to ask about Nian Nian's studio progress. He called, only to hear a monotonous ringtone, and no one answered. He called again, but the same thing happened.
His heart skipped a beat, and his expression, which had been calm just now, instantly became tense.
This girl never leaves her phone behind, so why didn't she answer? Was she feeling unwell from morning sickness? Or did she bump into something while fiddling with her studio objects?
The more he thought about it, the more anxious he became. Fortunately, he didn't have to see patients today, so Si Yan simply said a few words to his colleagues, grabbed the car keys and rushed home. He stepped on the accelerator much faster than usual along the way, and countless bad possibilities flashed through his mind.
When I opened the door, the house was quiet.
He walked quickly to the living room and immediately saw a shiny object lying in the corner of the sofa - it was Su Nian's cell phone. His heart, which had been hanging in his throat, calmed down a little, but he also felt a bit of helpless amusement.
He walked upstairs lightly and pushed open the bedroom door. Sure enough, he saw the girl curled up in the quilt and sleeping soundly, with her brows slightly furrowed, like a sleepy kitten.
The sunlight shone through the gauze curtains and fell on her face, looking unspeakably soft.
Si Yan walked over, tucked the corner of the quilt for her, and gently smoothed her frown with his fingertips. "You're so confused," he chuckled softly, his eyes filled with unwavering tenderness. "It's a good thing you're just asleep."
He sat by the bed for a while, listening to her even breathing. The anxiety he had just felt completely dissipated, leaving only tranquility in the room.
He thought that since he was back, he might as well make lunch before going to the clinic.
When Si Yan finished working in the kitchen with an apron on and put the food in the thermos, Su Nian was still not awake.
He tiptoed upstairs and took a look. Seeing that she was sleeping soundly with the corners of her mouth slightly raised, he couldn't help but give her a light kiss on the forehead before going downstairs.
He carefully warmed the food and wrote a note and placed it in the middle of the dining table: "Eat something when you wake up, don't be on an empty stomach. I'm going to the clinic, call me if you have anything." The handwriting was clear and powerful, and there was a small smiley face at the end.
After doing all this, Si Yan hurried out.
Su Nian slept so soundly that when she woke up, sunlight was slanting through the window. She stretched lazily and went downstairs. The first thing she saw was the warming food on the dining table and the note with the elegant handwriting.
Her nose suddenly felt sore, and her heart was filled with warmth - Si Yan was always like this, taking care of her meticulously. But she didn't know that behind this table of food, there was also a hurried return trip on his part.
In the next few days, Chen Ran did not contact Su Hong again.
That evening, Su Hong was sitting in front of the sewing machine sorting fabrics when she suddenly remembered something - the doctor said that day that the polyp removed from Chen Ran needed to undergo a pathological examination. The results should be out, right?
"He didn't contact me. Did it end badly?" Su Hong's scissors fell to the cloth with a "clack." Her heart suddenly felt tangled, like a ball of wool.
Chen Ran looks strong, but if he finds out something bad, I'm afraid he won't be able to hold on, right?
Once this thought came to her mind, it was like taking root, making her feel uneasy.
A straightforward person like her can't stand the feeling of "wanting to say something but not being able to say it, wanting to ask something but not being able to ask it". She feels so stuffy in her chest that she even has no appetite for dinner.
"How about... asking Fang Shuo?" Su Hong suddenly thought of her colleague Chen Ran.
Fang Shuo looks like an honest man. I met him in the hospital last time. It shouldn't be too much for friends to show concern for his condition, right?
She hesitated for a long time, found Fang Shuo's number in the address book, and placed her finger on the dial button. She pressed it and released it several times before she gritted her teeth and dialed it.
"Hello, is this Mr. Fang? I'm Su Hong." Her voice was a little tense.
"Hello, Ms. Su!"
"Um... I want to ask, are the results of Chen Ran's pathology test out? How is he?" Su Hong tried to make her tone sound casual.
There was silence on the other end of the line for a few seconds before Fang Shuo's hesitant voice came through: "This... Ms. Su, I'm really sorry, it's hard for me to say the result. You should ask him personally."
"It's hard to say?" Su Hong's heart skipped a beat and she became even more panicked. It seemed that the problem was really serious.
She hung up the phone, slumped in the chair, looked at the sky gradually darkening outside the window, and felt very upset.
