Chapter 1 Flash Marriage

Song Mai is getting married soon.

There was no traditional Chinese wedding dress on the day they got their marriage certificate; she simply went home quietly to retrieve her household registration booklet.

“Maizi is already this age and still doesn’t have a boyfriend. Marrying someone in their thirties wouldn’t be a bad deal for her. Besides, his family is rich; they’ll give her 500,000 yuan right off the bat…”

Inside the room, my sister-in-law was urging my parents to find her a divorced older man.

Judging from my parents' expressions, they have softened considerably compared to the past few days.

Fortunately, she's getting married today.

Song Mai pursed her lips and left home, sneaking to the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau like a thief, still wearing a mask on her face.

I know many people in the neighborhood, and I'm afraid of being gossiped about.

My wedding date is set for 3 p.m., and I'm dressed in all black.

After she got out of the car, she looked around and saw a man dressed in black talking on the phone with his back to her on the steps in front of the Civil Affairs Bureau.

Broad shoulders, narrow waist, and a slender, beautiful figure.

Is it him?

Song Mai thought to herself, "I'm not entirely sure."

Yes, Song Mai did not know her marriage partner.

Two days ago, as usual, she went to the welfare home to volunteer and talked about her troubles while playing chess with Grandpa Chu in cell number two.

Unexpectedly, Grandpa Chu enthusiastically introduced his grandson to her, saying he was a high-quality single man in his thirties.

Still high-quality dating at 30 and unmarried?

Song Mai was somewhat skeptical.

For her, a man who is thirty years old and still unmarried is either too picky or too ugly.

But at that very moment, the man in the black shirt turned around, revealing a cold and handsome face.

"Mr. Chu?"

Song Mai was stunned for a moment.

It's not ugly at all.

Chu Xing heard the woman's muttering.

He lowered his head slightly, frowning as he looked at the woman in front of him—her mouth was covered by a mask, and her almond-shaped eyes were staring straight at him, as if she didn't realize how offensive her words had been.

Such low emotional intelligence?

Chu Xing frowned even more deeply.

This is the granddaughter-in-law that the old man forced and coerced him to marry.

He pursed his thin lips and glanced at his watch.

With only twenty minutes left in the next multinational meeting, he wouldn't mind turning around and leaving if the other party didn't perform well.

Song Mai is a very sensitive person and can sense the other party's resistance.

To be honest, she wasn't particularly happy to meet such a handsome guy.

Because she always believed that being ugly didn't matter, as long as one had good character.

Grandpa Chu has been living alone in the welfare home for so long, how good can his grandson be?

Thinking about this, Song Mai's attitude became much calmer.

"If you don't want to get married, Mr. Chu can leave immediately. I won't force you."

As soon as he finished speaking, Chu Xing was taken aback.

He thought Song Mai was deliberately trying to win the old man's favor and wanted to find another way to marry into a wealthy family.

But this current attitude... could it be a strategic retreat?

Chu Xing frowned and scrutinized Song Mai.

She wasn't a stunning beauty, and her temperament was like a glass of bland, lukewarm water—unable to convey emotions through her eyes or glean any useful information.

After making eye contact for less than two seconds, Chu Xing lost interest and subconsciously looked back at his wrist.

To avoid being entangled with Song Mai, I specifically chose the cheapest watch today, priced at less than a few thousand yuan, with a silver bracelet that gleamed in the sunlight.

Song Mai also looked over.

With eighteen minutes left in the meeting, Chu Xing felt utterly bored.

I'm not getting married. I'd rather continue being pressured to marry than live with a woman like that for a year.

Looking at the watch worth several thousand yuan, Song Mai felt even more disgusted.

The watch on his wrist is so expensive, yet he doesn't think about spending more money on his elderly relatives.

Chu Xing's expression was indifferent; he was about to turn and leave.

At the same time, a woman's voice rang out.

[They dressed up impeccably, but where were they when they were taking care of Grandpa Chu?]

Chu Xing stopped in his tracks.

He lowered his head, his gaze meeting Song Maina's calm yet slightly disgusted look.

They were actually standing up for the old man?

Chu Xing suddenly realized.

He was initially skeptical, but what she just said was too blunt, almost to the point of offending people.

If it were truly to curry favor with him, Song Mai wouldn't have needed to do this.

Chu Xing moved his lips: "I brought the old man back."

As soon as he finished speaking, Song Mai was stunned.

Although this statement came as a bit of a surprise, the fact that they still knew to pick up the elderly person suggests they might not be completely beyond redemption.

Thinking of Grandpa Chu's kind face, Song Mai softened slightly, and then gave him some instructions:

“It’s good to take them back. The elderly should live in familiar surroundings. Rather than living in a nursing home, it’s better to hire a caregiver. In my experience, the caregivers in Dongxiang are quite good, and if that’s not possible, there’s Wanfu…”

Unaware of the change in the man's gaze, Song Mai continued recounting her story with remarkable familiarity.

"We also need to choose caregivers carefully. Grandpa Chu likes noodles and prefers strong flavors, so we need to remember to control the oil and salt intake. He also likes to play chess, and he comes over for a few games every Wednesday afternoon. The caregiver needs to remind him to drink water and walk around more..."

“Your family will take good care of you,” Chu Xing suddenly interrupted her.

Song Mai paused, speechless for a moment, "...Yes, family is even better."

There's nothing else to say, so let's part ways amicably.

Song Mai felt a sense of relief, but also a little regretful that she couldn't get married; delaying it any longer would only make things worse.

Just as he was about to turn and leave, he heard Chu Xing's deep voice say, "I work in sales, I don't have much money. I'm still renting an apartment and I don't have a car."

Is this still possible?

Song Mai was somewhat surprised. She looked up and met Chu Xing's scrutinizing gaze.

"I have a few conditions. If you agree, we'll go get our marriage certificate."

Song Mai reminded him that the old man was getting on in years and also wanted someone to keep him company.
