Chapter 176 You're Married?

She glanced at it; it was a video call from Chu Xing.

After Song Mai pressed the answer button, the man's enlarged handsome face appeared on the screen.

He has returned home; judging from the background, he is in the living room.

Song Mai had just taken a shower, and her hair, still slightly damp, was casually draped behind her head. The dim lighting made her skin appear even whiter and more radiant, and her unadorned face looked clean and languid.

She was wearing loose pajamas, with one hand resting on the laptop keyboard.

"What are you doing?"

The man's voice was deep and husky. In the quiet room, the voice went straight into Song Mai's ears, pleasant and alluring.

She finally understood what it meant for a sound to make your ears pregnant.

That's roughly how it is.

"I'm working on the documents I need for tomorrow; there are still some I haven't finished."

Looking at the pile of documents beside her, Song Mai pinched the bridge of her nose.

Upon hearing this, the man's brows furrowed almost imperceptibly, and a hint of heartache appeared in his eyes.

"Why are you still working so late? Don't overwork yourself."

Song Mai smiled nonchalantly:

"Hey, it's okay. The workload is manageable. Yunxing's compensation matches my workload, so even if it's a bit busy, I'm happy."

For working people, it's not that they're afraid of having a lot of work or being tired, but rather that they're afraid the salary and benefits offered by the company won't match their efforts and busy schedule.

But this is clearly not the case at Yunxing; Yunxing is definitely a company with a conscience.

"That's good. Don't work too hard, and remember to let me know if anything happens."

"good."

The man's concern warmed Song Mai's heart, and her smile deepened.

Chu Xing didn't say anything more, but just looked at her through the phone screen, his eyes filled with an indescribable emotion.

The air was extremely quiet, and Song Mai felt a bit awkward at one point.

Just as she was trying to find a topic to start a conversation, the man suddenly asked:

"Have you missed me?"

Upon hearing this, Song Mai's cheeks flushed slightly.

She stubbornly replied, "No, I've been rushing to catch up on my schedule all day, I haven't had time to think about it."

It's not true that she didn't expect it; ever since she officially started dating Chu Xing, she couldn't help but think of him every day, no matter how busy she was.

I'll wonder what he's doing, how busy he is, and whether he's eating properly.

These things seem to have become part of her daily routine.

She stubbornly denied it, while the man simply snorted coldly.

"You heartless little brat, remember to tell me when you're coming back."

"Don't worry, I'll let you know once it's decided."

The two chatted for a while longer. Seeing that she hadn't finished her work, Chu Xing didn't bother her anymore. He said some random things and then hung up.

Song Mai was already feeling drowsy, but Chu Xing's call successfully woke her up and dispelled some of her sleepiness. She rolled up her sleeves and threw herself back into her work.

After hanging up the phone, Chu Xing picked up his bag containing his laptop and went to his study as usual.

In fact, he had just arrived home when he called Song Mai.

She was busy on her business trip, but he wasn't much better off, and in fact, he was even worse off.

Just as he turned on his computer to get to work, the phone rang.

Seeing the number flashing on his phone screen, Chu Xing frowned, and only answered the phone when it was about to ring out.

As soon as the call was answered, a middle-aged man's voice, tinged with authority and anger, came through the receiver.

"I heard that the old man arranged a marriage for you, and you even got married to that woman. What exactly happened?"

The man on the other end of the phone was none other than his father, Chu Mingqian.

Chu Xing had little patience for him, and his voice was indifferent.

"You already know, so why are you asking? It's just what you know."

Chu Mingqian was already angry, and hearing his attitude made him even more displeased.

"What kind of attitude is this? The old man is getting old and senile, but are you senile too? Who is this person he introduced to you? Do you even know what kind of person she is? Do you know her specific situation? Did you ask for my and your mother's opinions? How dare you get married so rashly!"

Chu Mingqian's furious voice came through the receiver, making Chu Xing's brows furrow even more.

“I understand. Besides, the person Grandpa has chosen can’t be wrong. Haven’t you and Mom been urging me to get married soon? Why are you unwilling now?”

As soon as Chu Mingqian heard the news, he called Chu Xing. If the old man hadn't let it slip, he wouldn't have known about it at all, and wouldn't have known that his son was already married.

This is absolutely ridiculous. How can a father not know his son got married? How can that be?

So he immediately had someone check Song Mai's information and then called Chu Xing.

“It’s not that I’m unwilling, but your mother and I both feel that you’re not young anymore. Now that you’ve established your career, you should settle down and start a family soon. But you shouldn’t have gotten the marriage certificate without telling your mother and me, and you shouldn’t have just married some random cat or dog. It’s true that your grandfather introduced you to that woman, but he’s old and not so clear-headed. He doesn’t know much about that woman. How could you dare to get married so easily?”

Upon hearing this, Chu Xing's face instantly darkened, and his voice became much sharper.

“She’s not a cat or dog. I know her. She’s a good person. Grandpa’s judgment was right. As for why I didn’t tell you, I don’t think there’s any need to.”

Chu Mingqian is currently the highest commander of the peacekeeping force. He has been stationed abroad for twenty years, while his mother, Qin Jizhi, is a consul at the embassy. The two of them were sent abroad when Chu Xing was a few years old and have rarely returned in the past twenty years.

That's why Chu Xing's feelings for them were extremely indifferent. He grew up by the side of Old Master Chu and was educated by him. Over the years, it was Old Master Chu who had been worrying about him, while they, as his parents, had hardly ever cared about him.

When he was a child, his grandfather would help him with everything, while his parents were not always able to get in touch. Even when they did, they would only offer a few perfunctory words of concern.

The old man deliberately didn't mention his marriage, fearing they wouldn't agree to Song Mai's marriage. After all, Song Mai's family background was what it was, and they might disagree. He thought that once Chu Xing and Song Mai gave Chu Mingqian and Qin Jizhi a grandson, even if they disagreed, there would be nothing they could do.

Chu Xing, on the other hand, felt there was no need to say anything. When he was young, they didn't care about him, and now that he's grown up, there's even less need for him to report on his marriage. Besides, he didn't want them to interfere.

Since you didn't care about him before, it's best to never care about him again. You haven't fulfilled your parental duties, so why bother interfering in his affairs under the guise of doing what's best for him?
