Chapter 18: Divorce tomorrow morning, registration this afternoon

But when Lin Ran heard Song Mai say that she had given all of her savings of 50,000 yuan to Chu Xing, she couldn't help but start to worry again.

"I'm telling you, you're being too bold. You've only been married a short time, and you've already given him all your savings. What if he's lying to you?"

"It's not a gift, it's a loan."

Song Mai emphasized this point while organizing the cooperation documents for the new project.

Lin Ran had a bit of a headache. "Even if it was a loan, did you make him write an IOU?"

"We're husband and wife, how can we write an IOU?"

Lin Ran was speechless. She reached out and flicked her forehead hard. "You'll be swindled out of everything sooner or later!"

"He wouldn't lie to me."

Lin Ran felt a sense of disappointment and frustration regarding Song Mai's inexplicable trust in her.

"How old are you to still be so love-struck? I hope your husband still has a conscience when he's living off you."

At the same time, Zheng Yao pushed open Fang Yu's door aggressively.

"Manager, can you please do something about Song Mai and Lin Ran?!"

Fang Yu held a cigarette between his index and middle fingers, his eyes narrowing slightly as he exhaled smoke: "What's wrong with them now?"

Zheng Yao's chest heaved with anger.

"They bullied me!"

Upon hearing this, Fang Yu couldn't help but look up at her, his expression unreadable.

"It seems to me that you're the one who always starts trouble."

Zheng Yao pursed her lips, her beautiful eyes misting over, as if she were about to burst into tears, looking extremely aggrieved.

She gently shook Fang Yu's arm, acting like a spoiled young girl.

"Manager Fang, I really didn't do it. I always listen to you. How could I possibly cause trouble for no reason? It's all Song Mai's fault. Ever since last time, she's been looking down on me and even her words are sarcastic. You have to put in a good word for me."

Her voice was already melodious and gentle, but now the tone rose at the end, making it sound even more charming and shy.

It was like a soft, boneless little hand landing on Fang Yu's heart, teasing and arousing him.

Fang Yu took Zheng Yao's hand in his own, stroking it absently, a hint of difficulty appearing between his brows.

"It's not that I don't want to help you, it's just that you're all from the Spanish department, and as the manager, I can't very well show favoritism to one side, can I?"

Zheng Yao felt disgusted by the man's blatant taking advantage of her, but the thought that she could make things difficult for Song Mai made her feel that it was okay to give something in return.

She gripped Fang Yu's hand tightly, her eyes sparkling with affection and allure.

“I’m not an ungrateful person. The manager helped me, so of course I’m grateful.”

Fang Yu nodded in satisfaction: "Don't worry, as long as you're willing, I definitely won't stand idly by."

When Song Mai got off work in the evening, she received a message from Chu Xing, who said that he had gone out of town to discuss starting a business and would not be back that night.

After putting down her phone, Song Mai stuffed all her personal belongings into her canvas bag.

Lin Ran skipped and jumped, then hugged her from behind.

"How about we go eat at that seafood congee place behind the company?"

"Walk."

Song Mai's words were concise and to the point, which surprised Lin Ran.

"The sun must have risen in the west! Aren't you going home to have dinner with your husband tonight?"

He's not here tonight.

Upon hearing this, Lin Ran's smile froze.

"Did he run off with the money?"

“What are you thinking? He went to another city to discuss starting a business. We are protected by law, not just some casual relationship where we live together casually.”

Song Mai glanced at the time, then put her arm around Lin Ran and walked out.

"Alright, we haven't had dinner together in a long time. Why don't we have a proper meal together tonight?"

Lin Ran didn't say anything more, but she was still uneasy.

The next day, Chu Xing still hadn't returned, and there was still no news of him.

Lin Ran looked at Song Mai, who was sitting opposite her and focused on eating, and opened her mouth again and again but couldn't say anything.

That evening, Song Mai had just arrived at her doorstep carrying a canvas bag when she saw several familiar faces standing there.

"Dad, Mom, sister-in-law, what brings you here?"

Before Song Mai could react, her mother slapped her hard across the face, making a crisp sound.

"Smack—"

Song Mai covered her face, her ears ringing and she couldn't hear anything for a while before she recovered.

Pointing her finger at her nose, Song's mother cursed, "You wretched girl! I've raised you for nothing! Your father and I worked so hard to raise you, and now that you're married, you say you don't want to associate with us anymore. If I had known this would happen, I would have strangled you!"

Sister-in-law Song Mai quickly stepped forward and patted her chest, trying to comfort her with a very kind expression.

"Mom, calm down. Don't get upset and hurt yourself. Song Mai is your daughter after all. How could she not care about you and Dad?"

Song's mother, brandishing her arms, angrily rebuked, "What right does she have to tell us what to do? Since she married that gigolo, when has she ever contacted us?"

Song Mai slowly loosened her grip on the key, and it eventually fell back into her bag.

Song's mother shoved Song Mai: "You brat, open the door! Do you want your mother and father to keep standing at the door? You're such an unfilial daughter!"

Song Mai stood still, watching her mother's endless complaints.

"What exactly do you want?"

Sister-in-law Song Mai immediately stepped forward, "Mai Zi, your parents came to see you out of kindness, why are you talking to them like that?"

"Look at me? I doubt it." Song Mai sneered.

Over the years, her parents have always seen her as someone who either wants money or has other motives. When have they ever genuinely cared about her?

Song's mother and father immediately became angry, and Song's mother made a move to grab Song Mai's arm:

"Did you learn to be like this from that other man? I knew you wouldn't change so much for no reason. We're here today to make sure you divorce him immediately!"

Liu Weiqiang had already issued an ultimatum. They even received a threatening phone call from him before they left, saying that if they didn't get things done quickly, Liu Weiqiang probably wouldn't let them off the hook.

Song Mai took a step back, dodging her mother's outstretched hand, her attitude somewhat firm.

"I will not get a divorce."

This sentence completely enraged Song's mother.

She had initially thought that Chu Xing's circumstances weren't very good, but after Liu Weiqiang investigated, she found out that he didn't even have a job and had an elderly grandfather at home.

What use is someone like that?

"Do you even know what he does for a living? He doesn't even have a job, how is he supposed to support his family!"

“I have a job and don’t need him to support me.”

Sister-in-law Song Mai also joined in, fanning the flames:

"You're so foolish, Mai Zi! You're marrying him and expecting to support him? What's the point of marrying a man like that! You're not a little girl anymore. Wasting your time on him at your age won't make him cherish you; it will only make him think you're cheap and only doing this because you can't get married anymore!"

Song Mai's father, who had remained silent, also wore a cold expression.

"We're not here to discuss this with you. You're getting a divorce whether you like it or not! Tomorrow morning, you'll complete the divorce proceedings with him, and this afternoon you'll get your marriage certificate with Weiqiang. Only if you're with him can you have a good life!"
