Chapter 5 You Want a Divorce?

"Dad, Mom... what brings you here?"

She gripped the spatula tightly in her hand, and half of her joy at moving into her new home vanished instantly.

"Song Mai! Your brother and sister-in-law have been searching for you everywhere, they're frantic with worry. And what have you done? You secretly ran away to live here... Tell me, what's wrong with Liu Weiqiang? He didn't even meet you, and he immediately gave you a dowry of 500,000 yuan. Tell me, such an honest person, you—"

Song Mai was subjected to a barrage of insults, and for the first time, her parents' faces seemed so unfamiliar.

"But Mom, he..."

"What do you mean, 'him'? Do you know how much effort your sister-in-law put in to find such a good family? Not only did you not seize the opportunity, but you also drove him away with your words. How could I have given birth to such a good-for-nothing!"

Is it because she's not ambitious enough, or are they all just obsessed with money?

Song Mai's eyes welled up with tears; she felt wronged, but even more so, she was angry.

"But Liu Weiqiang is no good! He tried to touch me the moment we met!"

She squeezed those words out between her teeth. Having never been in a relationship, Song Mai naturally felt ashamed.

To everyone's surprise, the father next to him blurted out, "You're about to get married, what's wrong with touching each other?"

The tone was as if they were accusing Song Mai of being the one who didn't know any better.

Despite the obvious favoritism, strangely enough, after saying this, she suddenly stopped being angry.

Song Mai even felt like laughing.

—In the end, it all comes down to 500,000.

With the word "money" at the top of her head, no one cared about her feelings anymore, not even her own parents.

Thinking about how her brother had been repeatedly mentioning wanting to get a new car lately, she felt she should understand now.

Song Mai's father lit a cigarette and sat there. After finishing it, his tone softened a bit, "Mai, your mother and I are doing this for your own good. Tell me, he's a good catch, and he's interested in you, what more could you ask for?"

“Five hundred thousand.” Song Mai, who had been silent, suddenly spoke.

Song Mai's father was stunned for a moment.

"What?"

Song Mai's expression was indifferent as she said, enunciating each word clearly, "I'll let you marry me. But give me 500,000 yuan; that's my money."

"You've gone too far!" Song Mai's father exploded on the ground like a lit firecracker.

"I gave birth to you and raised you all these years, what's wrong with taking a little money from you! Besides, it's already a miracle that someone would offer 500,000 for you!"

His voice boomed throughout the corridor.

"Then you're wrong." Song Mai had finally waited for this moment, and her blood was boiling. She took out a notebook from her handbag and threw it into her parents' arms.

"Someone wants me! But I'm already married!"

When Song Mai's father saw the three big characters on the red book, he swayed slightly.

"You brat, how dare you sneak around behind our backs—"

Song Mai's mother glanced at the photo and breathed a sigh of relief: "It's a fake certificate, probably obtained in the stairwell."

Song Mai's father leaned closer, looking at the unnaturally handsome face, and his expression softened: "I almost fell for your trick, Mai. You don't even have a man yet, so stop fooling your parents. Come on, let's go back and get married!"

No sooner had the words left his mouth than footsteps sounded downstairs.

The delivery guy in the yellow shirt climbed up and paused for a moment when he saw the three people facing off.

Song Mai suddenly remembered that Chu Xing's underwear had arrived.

“Mine.” She stepped forward, took the item, and confidently shook her hands.

The man's underwear was clearly visible.

Song Mai's parents' faces changed instantly, turning pale and then purple.

Song Mai didn't care and casually walked to the bathroom.

"Honey, the underwear has arrived, open the door."

The doorway and the bathroom were far apart, so Chu Xing didn't hear what had just happened.

Upon hearing what Song Mai said, my first reaction was to keep my distance.

That's too ambiguous; he has no sexual interest in Song Mai.

But at that very moment, Song Mai's second voice came through the crack in the door.

No matter how strong she appeared, Song Mai was internally devastated.

Why are you putting me like this...? I'm your child too, aren't I...?

Chu Xing suddenly couldn't speak.

Finally, a small crack appeared, and to the astonishment of Song Mai's parents, a pair of large hands emerged, their veins bulging, clearly belonging to an adult man.

Song Mai handed over the underwear.

The moment their fingertips touched, Chu Xing could clearly feel that Song Mai's hand was trembling.

"Now you finally believe me, right?"

She turned around first, facing her parents, her expression like that of a victorious little hen.

The fact that she was living with a man left them completely bewildered. Before their parents could say anything more, they half-pushed her out the door.

"Song Mai, you brat—"

"I'm going home tomorrow, we'll talk about it then!"

The last roar was particularly loud; it could be heard clearly even in the bathroom.

With a bang, the door slammed shut, but Song Mai leaned against the door panel, and the emotions that had been building up inside her finally broke down.

She was the most outstanding one in the family since she was a child. She studied hard and worked hard, and after graduation she earned money to support her nephew's education and her brother's family. But they only treated her as a tool to make money and sold her off so easily.

Song Mai felt a lump in her throat, and tears welled up in her eyes.

The next moment, she met Chu Xing's eyes as he pushed open the door.

The other person was radiating heat, but unfortunately the bathroom door was too low, so they had to duck to come out.

"..." Song Mai suddenly stopped crying.

Sold for money, run away from home, live with strangers... Anyway, it's already like this, how much worse can it get?

"Thank you for earlier."

Song Mai lifted her apron to wipe away her tears, then turned and walked into the kitchen.

"Let's have noodles for dinner, and one egg each."

Chu Xing was left behind, his gaze fixed intently on Song Mai's frail figure.

The words spoken just a door away seemed to echo in my ears, trembling with a sob in their voices.

【I'm your child too, aren't I...?】

"Hurry up and wash your hands, eat while it's hot."

Song Mai brought over two bowls of noodles and tapped the table to remind her.

White noodles wrapped around a poached egg, with vegetable leaves and shredded meat floating inside; it was piping hot and smelled wonderful.

Chu Xing took a bite. It tasted very fragrant, which made him even more uncomfortable.

The special assistant investigated but didn't mention any other hidden stories in Song Mai's family.

But what just happened was clearly not a trivial matter.

Thinking about it carefully, although I was cold, she took good care of me today and spent a lot of money on me.

Although I didn't feel any attraction to him at all, Song Mai was at least a good person.

Chu Xing stared at the poached egg in the bowl for a while.

Logically and emotionally, shouldn't I offer some words of comfort?

He looked up at Song Mai across the table, who was engrossed in eating, slurping noodles and splashing soup everywhere.

Not elegant at all, but she ate with great relish.

"Is there anything you'd like to say?"

Chu Xing frowned. He had originally intended to comfort someone, but his words had taken a different turn.

Song Mai was also stunned.

After all, her motives for marriage were not pure.

Chu Xing bringing this up now, could it be...?

Do you want a divorce?

Upon hearing this, Chu Xing stopped eating: "You want a divorce?"
