Chapter 147 You Feed Me
"Zhaozhao, try this. It's a new dish I've developed." Danmu placed a piece of glutinous rice bamboo shoot into Gu Ji's bowl.
A hint of struggle flashed across Gu Ji's face. When he was a child, his family dried a lot of bamboo shoots and stored them away. For a few years, when the family was not doing well, bamboo shoots were a staple in almost every meal.
After those few years, she never ate bamboo shoots again, always feeling that they had a strange taste.
Dan Anwen noticed her expression and, taking advantage of Dan's mother's inattention, skillfully picked the bamboo shoots out of her bowl.
After seeing his actions, Gu Ji smiled at him with pursed lips.
Dan Anwen curled her lips and, taking advantage of the fact that everyone's attention was not on the two of them, opened her mouth and mouthed a sentence.
These words made Gu Ji blush. He immediately turned his head and pretended to eat seriously, but he was actually absent-minded. He had just said the word "paid".
She thought Uncle Dan was a repressed, brooding man.
She instantly understood what he meant; he just wanted her to perform well later.
Dan Shu squinted and secretly observed the two's actions, guessing that her uncle's confession had been successful.
It seems that her strategy was quite effective; at least the scene was beautiful and the ending was perfect.
However, while her uncle and Zhao Zhao have already become a couple, her ideal other half has still not returned to the country.
Her initially cheerful mood instantly soured, and she wondered when she would be able to have a future with Uncle Xiao.
Since her uncle and Zhao Zhao were able to go from being uncle and niece to lovers, she and Xiao Han also have a chance. She just doesn't know if Xiao Han is willing to give her that chance.
After dinner, Dan Anwen took Gu Ji and the two dogs out for a walk.
As the sun sets and twilight blends with the afterglow, the two walk along a forest path, each leading a dog. Golden light filters through the gaps in the trees, casting two intertwined shadows on their backs.
"Uncle Dan, would you like to come to our school's graduation ball?" Gu Ji asked softly, watching Guo Guo stop and sniff around.
Nan'an Middle School holds a graduation ball every year during graduation season, where graduates can invite their loved ones or family members to attend.
This is more like a suitable occasion to express the feelings that have been suppressed for three years. Every year at the graduation ball, someone will be confessed to, and in the end, the two will hold hands and enter their ideal university together.
Dan Anwen smiled and said, "Of course I'll come. I'll dance your first dance with you."
There is a generally accepted consensus at Nan'an Middle School's graduation dance: a man cannot refuse a woman's invitation to dance, but if a woman already has a dance partner, he cannot presumptuously approach her and invite her to dance.
This is a dance that marks the complete end of high school life. Graduation is not only the completion of academic studies, but also represents the beginning or end of love and friendship.
"But I can't dance." Gu Ji scratched her head sheepishly; she had never learned to dance.
Dan Anwen chuckled and said, "There are still a few days left. I'll teach you a simple dance, and I guarantee you'll learn it."
The man's confident promises were quickly proven wrong in the following days. The girl's limbs were excessively stiff and uncoordinated, and despite having dirtied countless pairs of his shoes, she still hadn't learned to dance.
Gu Ji, who had stepped on Dan An's foot again, looked dejected and apologetic, his face almost breaking into tears.
"Uncle Dan, am I really stupid?"
Gu Ji had no desire to dance anymore, and instead sat on the floor with a dejected look on his face, feeling as if he had no will to live.
Dan Anwen also did not expect her limb coordination to be so stiff. They had been learning for several days in a row, and she had not even fully mastered the simplest dance steps.
It's fair to say that the mind can understand it, but the body can't keep up.
"How about we try a different dance?" Dan Anwen suggested sincerely.
Gu Ji's eyes were filled with resentment. "This is already the fourth dance we've changed."
They've been trying different dances these past few days—waltz, tango, cha-cha, and more—and she feels like she's learning a bit too much of everything.
Dan Anwen unscrewed the water bottle next to him and handed it to Gu Ji, asking, "Do you still want to learn?"
The dance at Nan'an Middle School isn't all about dancing; if you can't dance, that's fine too—just don't participate in that part.
Gu Ji pursed her lips. She really wanted to dance with Uncle Dan at the ball, but her body couldn't. Not a single joint or limb obeyed her commands; each had its own ideas.
Moreover, she felt that if she continued learning, Uncle Dan's instep would eventually be swollen from being stepped on.
"Let's forget it. Let me see the back of your foot." Gu Ji said, reaching out to look at the man's foot.
Dan An lowered his eyebrows, stopping her from reaching out. "I'm tough, my instep is fine."
Then, she changed the subject, "What would you like for dinner? I'll make it for you."
Seeing this, Gu Ji did not insist on checking, and said with a smile, "I want to eat your steamed eggs."
Dan Anwen patted her head and teased, "Such low expectations? I'll cook this meal in the shortest time possible so you can eat on time, so feel free to order whatever you like."
Gu Ji forced a smile. She wasn't worried about not being able to eat at mealtimes; she was more worried about whether she would get diarrhea in the middle of the night.
However, she couldn't dampen Uncle Dan's enthusiasm for learning to cook, so she could only smile and order dishes, specifically choosing those that were less technically difficult.
The man, who had been secretly learning to cook for some time, was not blessed by God when it came to this skill.
One time, he felt he had learned enough from the people in the cooking videos, so he was eager to try cooking for Gu Ji.
Regardless of how much of the food ended up in the trash, the meal took more than two hours to prepare, but the final product consisted of only a bowl of steamed eggs, a dish of chicken wings that looked reasonably good, and a bowl of rice cooked by Aunt Zhang.
Gu Ji, who was starving and almost fainting while lying on the table, saw the two dishes and, without caring whether they tasted good or not, picked up his chopsticks and grabbed a chicken wing.
Under the man's expectant gaze, her face was conflicted; she couldn't decide whether to swallow or spit it out.
She could only stiffly put the chicken wing in her mouth, her eyes brimming with tears as she stared at him.
In the end, the man reached out and placed his hand under her chin, causing her to vomit.
Anyway, ever since then, the man has become more determined after setbacks, and even sought out professionals to learn cooking skills in his spare time. I just don't know how good his cooking skills are now.
Kitchen doorway
Gu Ji and Aunt Zhang looked at Dan Anwen in the kitchen with worried expressions. The pure white casual T-shirt and the apron around his waist did not look out of place at all.
Gu Ji swallowed hard, cleared his throat, and asked, "Aunt Zhang, Uncle Dan should be able to succeed this time, right?"
Aunt Zhang couldn't say something against her conscience, but she still had to give face to her employer. "My husband discussed a lot of recipes and steps with me, and I believe he should be able to succeed."
"Does Aunt Zhang still have any leftovers from lunch in the refrigerator?" Gu Ji gave a smile that looked more like a grimace, staring intently at Aunt Zhang.
Aunt Zhang smiled awkwardly, shattering Gu Ji's illusions, "There won't be any leftovers at home."
Although she knew there would be virtually no leftovers at home, Gu Ji still felt like crying.
I silently vowed to myself that I couldn't let Uncle Dan down or damage his confidence.
Aunt Zhang patted Gu Ji on the shoulder and said with a smile, "Zhao Zhao, just bear with it. If it's really too much, you can cook some more dishes yourself later. I'm leaving now."
Finally, Aunt Zhang gave Gu Ji a "good luck" look. It wasn't that she was disloyal, but mainly that her husband wanted to cook himself, and she couldn't refuse!
Aunt Zhang doesn't stay at Jinshan Villa every night; she only stays when Dan Anwen asks her to.
Staring at Aunt Zhang's departing figure and Dan Anwen's focused cooking, Gu Ji suddenly felt that the time ahead would be very difficult for her.
After she sat at the dining table and counted the textures of the tabletop countless times, the man finally brought all the dishes to the table.
Seeing that the dishes looked and smelled alright, Gu Ji felt a little relieved, thankfully none of them were burnt.
Dan Anwen took off his apron, sat down opposite Gu Ji, and said, "Try it."
Gu Ji subconsciously pursed his lips and carefully picked up the stir-fried peas and shrimp. It was unexpectedly delicious. Although the taste wasn't exactly vibrant in color and flavor, it was still palatable.
This is a huge improvement compared to when he first cooked chicken wings and used sugar instead of salt.
Gu Ji blinked her starry eyes and nodded frantically, praising, "Uncle Dan, your cooking is really delicious, you should try some too."
Dan An felt relieved upon hearing this. Fortunately, the child liked the food, so all his efforts were worthwhile.
"You feed me." Dan Anwen's alluring eyes were captivating, and a smile played on her lips.
Despite his helplessness, Gu Ji still fed the food to Dan Anwen's mouth.
After savoring the taste, Dan Anwen looked into Gu Ji's eyes and said, "It's delicious."
The deliciousness comes from the person who feeds you.
Gu Ji's chubby cheeks instantly turned red, and her dimples appeared faintly.
