Ye Wenyu quickly sensed Lin Tingfeng's sudden drop in mood. She remembered what the principal had said earlier: Lin Tingfeng had paid her tuition for four years, and that Lin Tingfeng had called her his brother in front of the principal. She remembered why she had come to see Lin Tingfeng after leaving the principal's office—to thank him.
I've heard that thanking someone makes you happy. If someone genuinely helps you, solves your urgent problem, or does you a great favor, you should definitely thank them.
Therefore, Ye Wenyu coughed lightly and mustered her courage to say gratefully, "Mr. Lin, the principal said you paid my tuition for four years. Thank you, thank you so much." The image of that night flashed before her eyes, when she cried because she had nowhere to borrow money and was worried about her university tuition and living expenses. She remembered when he appeared, he noticed her distress and asked her with concern if something was bothering her. She remembered that night, although she had just met him, she had poured out all her painful feelings of having no home, no money, and no love without any reservations.
She never imagined he was Lin Tingfeng. She never imagined that her decision to attend the Lin family's banquet that night, on a whim, would actually lead to her meeting Lin Tingfeng and his help.
I think I should be considered one of the lucky ones.
Lin Tingfeng listened to the girl's gratitude, paused for a moment, and pulled his thoughts back from where they had been drifting away like a kite. His originally somewhat depressed heart was warmed by the girl's gratitude.
Ye Wenyu raised her head, her beautiful face as pure as a white gardenia in summer. She said to him, "I will definitely repay you in the future. Is there anything you need me to do?"
Lin Tingfeng was surprised again. That night, he heard her pouring out her heart to him as if she were talking to God. He felt sorry for her, so he helped her with a small favor. When he did this, he never thought of asking her to repay him. He never expected that she would still remember to repay him.
He gazed at her silently.
Ye Wenyu mustered her courage and said, "I know you are a big businessman, and a very successful one at that. I know you all have conditions when you do business. You paid for my tuition for four years. Whatever your conditions are, I will do them if I can."
Lin Tingfeng remained silent.
The girl is only 18 years old, innocent and simple-minded, but she also knows how to repay kindness.
After saying those words, Ye Wenyu stood there with her head down, waiting for an answer. The July sun was so strong that her head was steaming, and beads of sweat the size of soybeans appeared on her forehead. There was no shade where they were standing; outside the principal's office was a bare open space without a single tree.
Lin Tingfeng realized that he had been standing under the scorching July sun for a long time. He raised his wrist to check the time and found that half an hour had passed while he was standing and talking.
He hadn't made such a foolish mistake in years—no, looking back on the first half of his life, he had never made such a foolish mistake before.
Seeing that the girl looked like she was about to get heatstroke, Lin Tingfeng smiled and said, "What's the condition? The condition is that you accompany me for a walk." He looked at the tree-lined road not far away, with decades-old plane trees on both sides. Walking under the trees would be much more comfortable than standing under the scorching sun.
Ye Wenyu looked up in shock, staring at him in disbelief. He had paid her tuition for four years, which must have cost at least 70,000 to 80,000, if not 100,000. Yet all he wanted was for her to accompany him for a walk. Had she heard correctly? Was it really true?
Seeing the girl's dazed expression, Lin Tingfeng took a few steps ahead and reached the shade of the trees. Seeing her standing blankly in the sun, looking dazed, he said in a deep voice, "Aren't you coming with me?" Ye Wenyu seemed to wake up from a dream and replied with a "Yes," and followed him.
The two walked slowly side by side under the tree-lined path. The decades-old sycamore trees had grown into towering giants, their branches forming an arch above their heads, like a natural pavilion. From time to time, a gentle breeze would blow, as cool as a mountain stream.
An awkward silence followed at first; neither of them spoke. Ye Wenyu was anxious, thinking back to that night when, unaware that he was Lin Tingfeng, she had said many things that offended him and the Lin family. This might be her only chance to apologize in person. He was a big businessman, constantly traveling the world; she might never see him again. Therefore, she mustered her courage and said, "Mr. Lin, last time—"
Before she could even apologize, her face had turned as red as an apple, and she was stammering.
Lin Tingfeng glanced at her and waited silently for her to continue.
Ye Wenyu mentally rehearsed the words repeatedly before finally managing to speak them clearly: "That night, I... I didn't know it was... it was you."
Lin Tingfeng nodded, meaning he knew. If she knew he was Lin Tingfeng, would she still be so relaxed and at ease, and treat him as a true friend?
Ye Wenyu blushed and said, "I...I said a lot of offensive things. Actually, actually, that garden is very beautiful, a fusion of the best of Chinese and Western styles. It can be said to be a masterpiece of nature, extraordinary and unparalleled. It is so rare that it is unparalleled in ancient and modern times, and even more so in China and abroad. It is as perfect as the Yuanmingyuan." In order not to offend Lin Tingfeng, Ye Wenyu forced herself to say a lot of disgusting things that made her feel nauseous, praising the Lin family's tasteless garden.
Upon hearing this, Lin Tingfeng stopped and looked at Ye Wenyu with a strange expression.
The wind blowing through the sycamore leaves became as cool as icicles, ruffling her long hair. Her small face, framed by the messy hair, resembled the stamen of a pear blossom. Lin Tingfeng longed to reach out and tuck a few stray strands of hair behind her ear. But he ultimately restrained himself.
In her concluding remarks, Ye Wenyu said, "In short, that garden has extremely high aesthetic standards and refined taste; it is the most beautiful garden I have ever seen!"
