Ye Wenyu was lost in memories of the past.
In her previous life, because she was young and naive, her feelings for her mother grew increasingly distant as she faced life alone. The constant work and the hardships she endured made her resent her mother, a resentment that only intensified, making her unwilling to face her.
Although her mother called to borrow money from her when her stepfather was sick, and she readily lent it to her, this was only because she herself did not want to leave Lin Tingfeng. Objectively, she needed a reason to push her closer to him, and her stepfather's illness came at just the right time, so she agreed to help him.
In other words, she agreed to lend money to her mother not because she considered her mother or appreciated her kindness in helping her stepfather, but because she needed an objective reason to get close to Lin Tingfeng and accept his suggestion that she become his mistress. Without an objective reason, it would seem too shameless and depraved for her to willingly become his mistress, like those prostitutes and courtesans. With the reason of her father's illness, she could justify being with him, and it would even evoke sympathy from others, making it easier for her to overcome her own psychological barriers.
This was the consideration and choice she made in her previous life.
Because she helped her stepfather for this reason, she never thought about meeting her mother again after getting together with Lin Tingfeng.
One day, at home, she was in the study with Lin Tingfeng. She was reviewing her lessons from the day, while he was reading the newspaper opposite her. On the desk was a vase of deep blue hydrangeas, the huge bouquet making the room even more serene and beautiful. Then her phone rang. She picked it up and saw that it was a call from her mother.
At that time, she and Lin Tingfeng had been living together for half a month.
She saw it was her mother's phone number, so she didn't answer the phone and let it ring incessantly.
It wasn't until Lin Tingfeng asked through the newspaper, "Why didn't you answer the phone?"
Ye Wenyu glanced at him and hung up the phone.
The room became quiet, and she continued to do her homework.
Lin Tingfeng put down his newspaper, gazed at her from a distance, and suddenly said, "Your stepfather's illness should be cured by now."
Ye Wenyu was stunned, wondering if she was made of crystal glass in his presence, that he knew everything she was thinking. Did he have clairvoyance and clairaudience, so that he could know who was calling her from several meters away? She had forgotten about her stepfather's illness, yet he still remembered. It was simply because when she agreed to be with him, she had mentioned that her stepfather was sick and urgently needed money.
Ye Wenyu lowered her head, pretending to be engrossed in her studies, and said softly, "I don't know, it should be ready by now." Her tone was extremely cold.
Seeing that she seemed sad and angry, Lin Tingfeng said gently to her, "Come here."
Ye Wenyu really needed love and warmth. She obediently went over, and he picked her up and placed her on his lap. Ye Wenyu nestled against his chest like a cat, not saying a word. Deep down, her resentment towards her parents surged up like a tide, causing her immense pain.
She thought to herself that her parents divorced when she was young, and she never knew what "fatherly love" was. She refused to call her biological father "Dad" and even less so her "stepfather" whom she had only met once or twice. Compared to those two men, Lin Tingfeng was more like a responsible father.
Lin Tingfeng's voice rang out above her head. He asked gently, "Was that your mother who called just now?" He gently stroked her long hair with his hand.
"Yes," she answered softly, closing her eyes in his arms and quietly feeling the warmth from his chest. Her father had abandoned her when she was young, and her mother had sold the house and remarried after she turned eighteen. She had lost her home and become an orphan. It was Lin Tingfeng who gave her a home again and let her know the warmth and love in life.
Lin Tingfeng said slowly, "Then why not answer?"
“Because—” she suddenly opened her eyes and said quickly, filled with resentment, “because she abandoned me! She said she had fulfilled her responsibility by raising me until I was eighteen. She got married and then sold the house, leaving me without a home or family overnight! I became a homeless orphan! She pushed me cruelly into society, leaving me to face a life of hardship alone. I suffered a lot and endured a lot of pain. If it weren’t for you, I would have died on the streets long ago. I can’t forgive her!” As she finished speaking, she gritted her teeth, her face turned ashen, and she tightly gripped the shirt in front of his chest.
Resentment contorted her face, and she lost control of her emotions.
Lin Tingfeng sensed the intensity of her emotions, so he reached out a hand and gently patted her back, as if coaxing a child.
Ye Wenyu gritted her teeth and said, "Does a mother like this deserve to be called a mother?" Her mouth was like it was filled with ice, her words fierce and chilling.
Lin Tingfeng listened quietly without saying a word, letting her vent her anger.
Ye Wenyu clenched her fists and gritted her teeth, saying fiercely, "I will never forgive her! After I went to university, she got married and was so busy with her stepfather's two children that she didn't even call me once. Now that I'm doing well, she calls me. I know exactly what she wants, and I won't give it to her, never!"
The resentment brought her immense pain, reminding her of all the heartbreaking events of the past, driving her almost insane. Her anger and repression were beyond description.
She knew that ever since her stepfather fell ill and her mother successfully borrowed money from her, there would be a second and a third time. Their greed would be a bottomless pit. She had sold herself to Lin Tingfeng, but not for the sake of that terrible and heartbreaking family of origin. So when her mother called, she didn't answer because she knew what her mother was thinking.
She now has the ability to help her mother, but she doesn't want to help her because her mother was too cruel to her before.
She hated her so much!
Lin Tingfeng felt something was off. He recalled something from the past and gently asked her, "Why did you lend money to your stepfather when he was sick and needed money for surgery?"
"I—" Ye Wenyu's body stiffened, her face suddenly flushed red, and her heart panicked. She didn't want Lin Tingfeng to see her true feelings, so she immediately struggled to stand up from his arms and retreated to the shadows to the side.
Like a child who has done something wrong, she fiddles with the hem of her clothes, bites her lip, her face flushed, and her big eyes dare not look up at people.
Because of her series of small actions and her evasive behavior, Lin Tingfeng saw everything. He was a very smart man, and he immediately understood the reason behind it.
