Chapter 214 Restoring Family Ties

(214)

Almost a year has passed, and Ye Wenyu has been trying hard to forget the kindness her mother had shown her in the past. She doesn't visit her or call her, but in the dead of night, when she dreams of her mother, she always remembers how, when she was little, her mother would rather eat porridge and pickled vegetables for a month than spend half a month's salary on princess dresses for her at the mall.

She was once the apple of her eye, cherished and pampered like a precious gem.

After starting university, because of her resentment towards her mother, she was always unhappy whenever she thought of the elderly woman.

Ye Wenyu fell into deep thought.

The next day, perhaps Lin Tingfeng's words had an effect. When Zhang Susu called a second time, Ye Wenyu hesitated for a moment as she looked at the ringing number before answering the phone. She held the phone tightly to her ear, but the resentment that had been nagging at her heart kept her silent.

Resentment was like an evil spirit, causing her great inner pain.

"Hello, is this Xiaoyu? Xiaoyu, it's Mom." Zhang Susu's voice rang out affectionately.

Ye Wenyu's heart skipped a beat. How long had it been since she'd heard her mother's voice? A long-lost feeling washed over her, as if she were back in her childhood home, opening the door to find her mother bustling about in the kitchen preparing food. She held a spatula in her hand, an apron tied around her waist, and the aroma of food wafted from the kitchen. She leaned against the kitchen doorway, peeking out and smiling lovingly at Ye Wenyu, calling out, "Xiaoyu, go wash your hands, dinner's almost ready."

This is what a mother is like; this is what a mother should be like.

Ye Wenyu recalled that when she was little, her mother always loved to ask her, "Who do you love the most?" Without hesitation, Ye Wenyu would answer, "My mother." "Why?" "Because I was born from your belly."

Zhang Susu would then hug her tightly with immense joy and give her a sweet kiss.

"Xiaoyu, are you listening?" Zhang Susu's voice was much clearer and crisper than Ye Wenyu remembered, and therefore, she sounded younger.

Ye Wenyu composed herself and immediately said, "I'm listening." But she remained wary, guarding against the old woman making any unreasonable demands. She thought to herself that if she made an unreasonable request, she would definitely refuse it coldly at the first opportunity.

However, to everyone's surprise, Zhang Susu smiled gently and said in a loving voice, "Xiao Ye, your Uncle Wang has been discharged from the hospital for several months. He was busy with family matters and didn't have time to spare. Now that he has some free time, we wanted to come and see you."

What? Ye Wenyu was stunned. Her mother called her not to borrow money like last time, but to come and see her?

Ye Wenyu was quite surprised, and then a warm feeling washed over her, making her very touched.

Life had always taught her that few people are grateful, but today she realized that perhaps it was her own problem—she was too expecting anything in return for her kindness.

However, as the ancients said, "Never forget what you have received, and never forget to repay the kindness you have shown."

So, her mother wasn't as heartless as she had imagined, was she?

Ye Wenyu felt a surge of joy and admiration. In that instant, she was filled with respect and gratitude for Lin Tingfeng. He was truly a wise man.

Zhang Susu said on the other end of the phone, "Especially your Uncle Wang, he always mentions it to me. He says that if it weren't for you, he might be dead, dying in the hospital. You saved him from this illness, so I must thank you in person."

Ye Wenyu was stunned again. She stood there in silence. Her mother and stepfather actually planned to come and see her in person. She had thought that family ties would never be related to her again in this lifetime. Unexpectedly, she had regained them.

"Xiaoyu, are you free?"

Ye Wenyu composed himself and immediately said, "That's convenient."

Although she had always acted indifferent to her mother's abandonment and neglect, she now understood that deep down, she still longed for family affection.

Lin Tingfeng's words echoed softly in her ears again: "Everyone needs family."

In that instant, Ye Wenyu admired Lin Tingfeng immensely, to the point of worship. She felt that he was a wise man in life, a guiding light for her. Before she even understood her own feelings, Lin Tingfeng had already seen through her from afar. He knew that she needed family affection, so he persuaded her to answer her mother's phone call.

Ye Wenyu's eyes softened and a smile appeared on her lips. She thought to herself that if she hadn't been persuaded by Lin Tingfeng to answer her mother's call, she would have remained disheartened, thinking that her mother was calling her just to use her as an ATM and keep asking her for money. But in fact, it was her mother and stepfather who were grateful for her lending them money for hospitalization, so now that they had recovered, they wanted to come to her door to express their gratitude in person.

Zhang Susu smiled happily and said to Ye Wenyu, "Then tomorrow, tomorrow morning, your Uncle Wang and I will come to your school to see you, okay?"

Ye Wenyu smiled and said, "Okay." She happily thought that tomorrow, when they came to the school to see her, her teachers and classmates would see her parents visiting her. From then on, she would no longer be an abandoned child. She would also be a child with a mother. Like everyone else in the world, she would not lack family affection.

After Zhang Susu and she agreed to meet the next day, she said goodbye.

Ye Wenyu hung up the phone and went to find Lin Tingfeng with a beaming smile, her steps as light as if she were stepping on springs.

At that time, Lin Tingfeng had just returned home and was changing his shoes in the entryway. He looked very tired after a long day. She rushed over and hugged him tightly, her eyes sparkling with joy.

Lin Tingfeng smiled and looked at her tenderly.

Ye Wenyu said to him gratefully, "Thank you."

Lin Tingfeng gazed at her and asked gently, "What are you thanking me for?"

Ye Wenyu was overjoyed and told him, "My mom didn't call to borrow money from me. It's because I lent them money when my stepfather was sick last time. My stepfather has been discharged from the hospital and is now recovered. He remembered me and felt it was necessary to thank me, so he plans to come to the school to see me tomorrow."

Because she was so happy, her words flowed like a continuous thread.

Lin Tingfu smiled, the corners of his mouth turning up, and said to her, "Well, so many things aren't as bad as you imagine, Wenyu. Sometimes, I think you're a pessimistic child. Your thoughts about people and things are full of negative energy, including your thoughts about me—" He looked up at her and slowly said, "including your thoughts about me. You'll know later that I'm not as bad as you imagine."

Ye Wenyu blushed. She secretly wondered, "Does he know everything I think about him? He's like a mind reader."

Lin Tingfeng saw her blush and couldn't help but smile.

Ye Wenyu protested, "No, I think you're a good person now."
