Chapter 288 Mother's Warning

(288)

Lin Tingfeng and his mother exchanged glances, then looked at Ye Wenyu together, and nodded approvingly.

They seemed to really like her quietness and sensible nature.

After the meal, Lin Tingfeng took Ye Wenyu's hand and led her to see his father.

After passing through corridors and countless pavilions and towers, they finally arrived. Lin Tingfeng's father lived in a spacious, airy, and sunny house. The surroundings were remarkably quiet; despite being a villa in a bustling city center, it was as still as a silent valley. The old man lay on the bed, his face a sickly pale, sleeping peacefully. He was emaciated, his hands on the blankets resembling chicken claws. To the west of the old man's room were the servants' quarters, the quarters for his personal attendants. The air was thick with the smell of medicine, the odor that emanates from someone chronically ill and bedridden.

Ye Wenyu felt inexplicably nervous.

Lin Tingfeng gently led Ye Wenyu inside, stood at the head of the old man's bed, and softly called out, "Dad—"

The old man remained motionless.

Lin Tingfeng smiled and said softly to Ye Wenyu, "It seems you're not so lucky either. The old man won't wake up. Let's go."

"Who said I wasn't awake—" A hoarse, aged voice suddenly rang out, like a firecracker exploding in the silent air, startling Ye Wenyu. She looked up and saw that the old man on the bed had opened his eyes at some point and was staring at her, looking and looking again.

Such a gaze sent chills down Ye Wenyu's spine.

Mr. Lin, the father of Lin Tingfeng, who once built the Lin Group from scratch, is now terminally ill and looks weaker than a toddler.

Ye Wenyu respectfully greeted him, "Uncle."

Compared to Lin Tingfeng's young and beautiful mother, his father looked old and frail, appearing to be two generations older than Lin Tingfeng's mother.

This is shocking, this is unbelievable.

Lin Tingfeng said politely but somewhat formally, "Dad, this is Xiaoyu. I brought her to meet you."

Lin Tingfeng's father's gaze fell on Lin Tingfeng and Ye Wenyu's clasped hands. He snorted coldly, a sarcastic smile on his face, and slowly said, "Your mother and you resent me and hate me for the rest of your lives, but aren't you just like me!"

Lin Tingfeng's face changed color, and his two hands hanging at his sides clenched into fists.

Ye Wenyu froze, looking at the old man. She felt that the Lin family's old house held a huge secret, and she was excluded from that secret. Her palms and back began to sweat profusely, and her heart pounded wildly like a drum.

The old man continued to stare at Ye Wenyu, his gaze extremely complex. He slowly said, "Her eyes are very similar to Zishan's. Little girl, why aren't you wearing purple? If you wore purple, you would look even more like Zishan. Where did Zishan go? Has she come back?"

Who is Zishan?

Ye Wenyu was stunned again. She curiously raised her head and looked at the old man, trying to figure out what he meant by observing his expression.

Lin Tingfeng's expression changed drastically after hearing his father's words. Without giving Ye Wenyu a chance, he decisively grabbed her hand, turned around, and strode out of the room.

Ye Wenyu was filled with doubts. Lin Tingfeng took her hand and strode forward, away from the ward and away from his father.

He was incredibly fast, taking two steps at a time, as if a terrifying beast was chasing him. Ye Wenyu couldn't keep up with his pace and had to jog to barely stand shoulder to shoulder with him.

He stopped when they reached the garden ahead and said to Ye Wenyu, "We'll go home in a bit."

Ye Wenyu nodded, panting heavily. She looked at Lin Tingfeng, her mind filled with questions. What did his father mean by that? What illness did his father have? Why did he bring her to meet his parents? Where were the rest of the family? Why had they all vanished like thin air? She hadn't seen Lin Tingxuan in a long time; was he alright?

However, Lin Tingfeng's face was expressionless, his complexion was somewhat pale, and his eyes were as cold as ice. It was obvious that his father's words had displeased and angered him. He stared into the distance, as if recalling a distant past event, one that was too painful to revisit.

Ye Wenyu knew that a person who didn't like to talk would absolutely not be able to stand the people around her chattering like sparrows. She wasn't the kind of girl who talked a lot either. One of the main reasons Lin Tingfeng liked her was that she knew how to keep quiet. Many times, she shouldn't ask questions that she shouldn't ask. If he wanted to tell her, he would definitely take the initiative to do so.

Therefore, Ye Wenyu suppressed her inner doubts. The roses in the garden were in full bloom, with bright red, pink, yellow and other colors, making it look like a rose garden. She admired it for a few minutes and remembered that before this, Lin Tingfeng's mother had asked to speak with Lin Tingfeng alone. Now, after seeing his father, Lin Tingfeng was still by her side.

Ye Wenyu was a sensible person. She said to Lin Tingfeng, who was deep in thought beside her, "These roses are blooming beautifully. May I pick a few to take home and put in a vase?"

She thought painfully that she loved him, but he was a very complex and mysterious person. Her love for him was a sharp, steely pain, with extreme joy, yet she knew it was poison. It was like a person dying of thirst bending down to drink from a spring, knowing that the spring had been poisoned, but she couldn't control herself.

Even now, knowing that the Lin family is strange in every way, she still can't bear to leave him and still thinks of him in every way.

Lin Tingfeng just wanted to get Ye Wenyu out of the way so he could meet his mother. So he smiled slightly, nodded gently, and said, "Of course you can. Pick as many as you like. I'll call the gardener over and have him bring shears for you to pick. You can choose for yourself."

Ye Wenyu nodded.

Lin Tingfeng summoned the gardener, an old man in his fifties with white hair, holding rose shears in his hand. He smiled gently at Ye Wenyu, and Ye Wenyu tactfully left with the gardener.

Lin Tingfeng glanced at her, then turned and went to his mother's room.

Ye Wenyu guessed that Lin Tingfeng had gone far away before turning around and looking at the place where he had stood in the flower bushes. He was no longer there, so she knew that he had gone to find his mother.

Honestly, what is there that Ye Wenyu can't hear? It's just that she's a poor woman, and he can't really divorce his wife and marry her.

Ye Wenyu shook her head with a sarcastic smile and went off to select roses.

Lin Tingfeng arrived at his mother's room, where the old woman was waiting for him. Lin Tingfeng briefly reported that he had brought Ye Wenyu to see his father, cleverly omitting what his father would say next. His father sarcastically remarked that he was now just like he had been years ago; his father was nearing the end of his life, sometimes lucid, sometimes confused, having forgotten many things from the past, yet he still vividly remembered the woman in purple.

If his mother knew, she would probably be heartbroken and go crazy. In any case, he couldn't let the old woman's old illness flare up again.

He meant well and didn't want his mother to worry.

His mother nodded and asked him, "Is your father awake?"
