A cold wind blew from the mountaintop, carrying the chill of the accumulated snow, sending shivers down her spine. As the wind blew, the pines rustled, but to Ye Wenyu, it sounded like the wailing of ghosts. Looking at the sunlight at the foot of the mountain in the distance, she felt an unusual chill. It was strange; although it was after the snow had cleared and the rest of the place was bathed in sunshine, this place was so cold and gloomy, as if the sunlight could never reach here.
Ye Wenyu followed behind Lin Tingyue, observing her quietly as she walked. The tone of her voice just now was strange, as if it was full of untold stories.
The group quickly entered the sanatorium. Ye Wenyu looked around for Lin Tingxuan, but she was disappointed. The sanatorium was quiet, like a graveyard.
Even the one or two medical staff I saw outside have disappeared.
Lin Tingyue navigated the streets and houses with practiced ease, while Ye Wenyu followed behind, marveling at her familiarity with the paths.
The three of them went up to the fourth floor. Lin Tingyue went to a ward, pushed open the door, and then turned around to look at Ye Wenyu, who was waiting there.
Ye Wenyu was stunned, her eyes widened to the size of teacups, and her heart began to pound. Could it be that Lin Tingxuan lived here?
Her heart clenched with fear, her mind a terrifying blank, a cacophony of thoughts. She wanted to back down, but having come this far, she desperately needed to know the answer. So, she mustered her courage, took a step, and entered the room.
For years, she had stood on the edge of the Lin family's secrets, and now, she had finally found the answer.
A man wearing a white hospital gown with blue stripes sat facing the window, painting. Two trees on the canvas were already taking shape.
Could he be Lin Tingxuan? Lin Tingxuan who disappeared for two years?
Ye Wenyu's eyes widened, her heart pounding in her throat. She pressed her lips tightly together, utterly incredulous.
After two years apart, has his brother locked him up in such a terrible cage?
Although only the back of the man in front of her could be seen, she found him to be frighteningly thin, practically skin and bones, as if a gust of wind could easily blow him over.
The surroundings were eerily quiet. Ye Wenyu could hear her own heart pounding faster and faster. She looked nervously at the man with his back to her, pleading in her heart, "No, it can't be him!"
If it really is Tingxuan, then Lin Tingfeng is simply a demon!
Seeing that Ye Wenyu remained silent, Lin Tingyue smiled slightly and softly said to the retreating figure, "Tingxuan, look, who has come to see you?"
The figure's shoulders trembled, then it slowly turned around.
Like a thunderclap, Ye Wenyu swayed. It really was Lin Tingxuan! Compared to two years ago, he had become much thinner, and his once bright eyes were now dull and lifeless.
He stared at Ye Wenyu in disbelief, his eyes widening as his hand holding the paintbrush trembled. Finally, tears streamed down his face as he choked out, "Xiaoyu, is it really Xiaoyu?"
Ye Wenyu was almost stunned. Her mind went blank, and she heard a buzzing sound in her ears, as if a million bees were flying by.
She walked towards Lin Tingxuan involuntarily and squatted down beside him. He was now extremely thin, like a paper doll. Was he living here for two years because he was mentally ill?
He was so thin he was practically skin and bones, with unusually large eyes.
In just two years, he transformed from a handsome, artistic young man into something neither human nor ghost!
Lin Tingxuan reached out and tightly grasped Ye Wenyu's hand, his hands like bird claws, his deep-set eyes brimming with tears. He said to Ye Wenyu in a trembling voice, "I've wanted to come find you every day, but I couldn't get out! Why did you only come to see me now? I've been looking forward to seeing you every day, thinking that one day, when you came to find me, I could get out, I would be saved, and you've finally come!" He cried and laughed, laughed and cried, wiping away his tears with the back of his hand, but as soon as the back of his hand left his eyes, large streams of tears gushed out like a spring, instantly blurring his vision.
He frantically wiped his eyes, troubled by the tears that were obscuring his vision and preventing him from seeing Ye Wenyu. He said in a trembling voice, "This isn't a dream, is it? This isn't a dream, is it!"
"It's not a dream, it's me, I've come to see you." Ye Wenyu was too shocked and confused, and a wave of guilt surged up. She knew that there was a time in the past when Lin Tingxuan regarded her as his savior, the last straw when he was drowning. That's why he said he had been waiting for her to save him.
She looked at Lin Tingxuan with guilt and asked him softly, "Are you feeling any better? Your brother made you stay in the hospital for your own good, hoping you will recover soon."
"I'm not sick, I'm not sick, he framed me!" Lin Tingxuan suddenly became agitated. He desperately pointed to his heart with his fingers, his eyes wide with fear, and said urgently to Ye Wenyu, "I really don't have a mental illness, I'm perfectly normal and healthy. He was worried that I would take the inheritance, he thought I would steal you away, so he framed me for being sick. I was framed by him, I was locked up by him!"
Lin Tingxuan's voice was urgent and angry. His eyes were wide open and red-rimmed as he looked anxiously at Ye Wenyu, as if afraid she wouldn't believe him.
He placed both hands on his heart, as if he wanted to take out his own heart and let Ye Wenyu see his true feelings.
Ye Wenyu felt a pang of heartache upon seeing Lin Tingxuan like this.
She was barely able to save herself; she was neither an angel nor a hero, but she could have done so much more. But she didn't.
Lin Tingxuan said fiercely to Ye Wenyu, "You have to believe me! If you don't believe me, you can take me to other hospitals for testing, okay?" He pointed frantically at his chest, as if afraid that Ye Wenyu wouldn't believe him. He was swearing an oath. Ye Wenyu watched his intense movements and was really worried that he was going to puncture his chest cavity!
It seemed like there wasn't enough oxygen in the ward, so Lin Tingxuan started breathing heavily through his mouth.
Ye Wenyu was conflicted; she didn't know who she should trust.
Lin Tingyue spoke up at this moment, coldly saying to Ye Wenyu, "If my second brother is really sick, why would he be brought here? Xiaoyu, look carefully, are there any other patients here? There are more than a dozen doctors and nurses looking after him alone. Don't you find that strange?"
Ye Wenyu was stunned; she hadn't seen any other patients just now.
As she entered the sanatorium, she felt a deep chill, as if she were passing through a public cemetery.
However, she gently shook her head, thinking, Lin Tingfeng isn't such a bad person. He's been so good to her, how could he be so bad to his own brother?
