Lin Tingfeng, dressed in a dark coat, stood at the door. His tall and imposing figure, cast by the lamplight, resembled the shadow of a tree under the moonlight on the office wall.
There was a complex tenderness on his face, and an indescribable weariness.
Ye Wenyu suddenly remembered that he had been waiting for her to have lunch together. She had been accompanying him for lunch for the past few days, but she had forgotten about it today because so many things had happened.
So he took the initiative to find her.
Seeing that she looked like she had been seriously ill, Lin Tingfeng knew it must be because of Lin Tingyue's influence. He walked up to her, looked at her with concern, and asked gently, "Are you feeling unwell?"
Ye Wenyu shook her head and said in a hoarse voice, "If you don't want to eat, go eat by yourself."
"Where are the others?" Lin Tingfeng looked at the empty secretariat. He remembered what Lin Tingyue had said: Xiaoyu was his only weakness. Before, he was a man in full armor, without any weaknesses. But now it was different. When a person has a weakness, he has something to worry about and cannot be fearless. Things probably wouldn't be as easy to resolve as he had imagined before. What would the future hold? At this moment, Lin Tingfeng felt completely lost.
Ye Wenyu said softly, "Your sister treated everyone to a meal on her first day of internship, and they all went out to eat." Her voice seemed to suddenly conjure up a serious throat ailment.
Lin Tingfeng nodded slowly.
Ye Wenyu buried her face in the table again; at this moment, she didn't want to see him.
She feared that her love would only be a deception, that wealthy and powerful men didn't use love as a pretext to deceive young girls' feelings.
She clearly sees things clearly, so why can't she see them clearly when they happen to her?
Lin Tingfeng looked at Ye Wenyu, whose face was as white as a lily. After pondering for a moment, he said to her, "Come to my office. I have something to say to you." After saying this, Lin Tingfeng left the secretariat.
What? Ye Wenyu looked up in surprise, a huge question mark rising in her mind. What did Lin Tingfeng mean? Did he mean that he was finally willing to tell her the big secret of the Lin family? Or did he mean that he would set her free? Her heart began to beat faster. She had been in the abyss of despair, but now she seemed to see a ray of light and hope.
Ye Wenyu did want to know his attitude, so after thinking about it, she cheered herself up and went to his office.
The corridor was quiet, the floor smooth and gleaming like glass, exceptionally clean. A huge bird of paradise plant stood at one end, its green fan-shaped leaves swaying gently in the breeze, like a graceful beauty. Ye Wenyu walked softly, her heart pounding nervously as she recalled Lin Tingfeng's words. She was about to learn the secret; perhaps knowing the secret would open the fog from her life.
With this expectation, Ye Wenyu entered Lin Tingfeng's office. He was already waiting near the small dining table, which, as usual, was set with three dishes and a soup, plus two bowls of white rice.
The room was dimly lit, making the entire office resemble a delicate traditional Chinese painting. Lin Tingfeng, on the other hand, was like a figure within that painting.
When Lin Tingfeng saw her, he said, "Let's eat first, we can talk while we eat." He seemed to have made up his mind, and therefore, his overall mental state was much better than when he was arguing with his sister.
Ye Wenyu nodded, sat down opposite him, and started eating.
She had no appetite at all; the rice she ate felt like pebbles stuck in her throat. She had no choice but to put down her chopsticks, pick up her water glass, and drink some water. When she looked up, she realized that Lin Tingfeng hadn't eaten either.
The food in his bowl was barely touched, which showed that he was under a lot of pressure.
However, due to overwork, his appetite has always been poor.
Ye Wenyu thought to herself that the reason he came to the secretariat to find her was because he was worried about her and cared about her. The reason he asked her to come to his office was because he was worried that she was hungry, so he asked her to eat, even though he himself had no appetite.
He loves her.
A warm feeling washed over me.
But why?
Lin Tingfeng spoke at this moment. He gazed at her, pondered for a while, and slowly said to her, "Xiaoyu, I've always thought you're a very intelligent girl." Even now, after spending so much time together and having won her heart and soul, he still doesn't tire of seeing her. Whenever he sees her, a thousand tender feelings surge into his heart. He was shocked yet resigned, thinking that this might be what is called true love, what is called a soulmate.
But now, as things become more complicated, he is becoming increasingly afraid of losing her, and he deeply feels her pain and anxiety.
Ye Wenyu was stunned for a moment before putting down her tasteless food. She sat stiffly in the chair and said hoarsely, "I'm sorry to disappoint you, I'm not smart at all." Her throat seemed to have suddenly developed a serious throat ailment, making it difficult for her to speak.
How could a smart girl still be by his side at this point? She would have run far away long ago for her safety and reputation!
Even though she was originally smart, love made her act foolish.
Lin Tingfeng gave a bitter smile and slowly said to her, "I know I've wronged you. In the name of love, I did things that hurt you." He made her feel like a monkey in a cage, a bird in a cage.
Upon hearing this, Ye Wenyu felt a lump in her throat and her eyes reddened. She quickly lowered her head, pretending that nothing had happened.
Lin Tingfeng sighed softly, stood up from the small dining table, walked to the blinds and stood there with his hands behind his back. He slowly said to her, "The older a person gets, the less they like to talk. Because after experiencing many things in life, they realize that the more they talk, the more mistakes they make. Even if they can talk and speak properly, it doesn't really matter. So, I have never explained my decision."
This is probably the explanation for his continued silence.
Ye Wenyu was stunned again, her back to Lin Tingfeng, her body motionless, but her heart was in turmoil. This was his explanation; he was beginning to explain to her.
He changed his principles for her, didn't he? My heart was filled with warmth, like snuggling up to a warm fire on the coldest days of winter.
Lin Tingfeng continued slowly, "But today, I've found things to be getting more and more complicated. Lin Tingyue's mother has returned, and I'm afraid an even greater crisis is yet to come. If I don't explain, I might lose you." His voice trembled slightly, like the shadows of trees in the wind. Such unease was rarely seen in Lin Tingfeng.
Ye Wenyu was stunned again. Was he afraid of losing her, so he took the initiative to confess today? So, he really cares about her, doesn't he?!
He saw her escape, so today he, who had believed for many years that silence was golden, took the initiative to talk about the past.
At that moment, Ye Wenyu felt a warm glow in her heart.
Lin Tingfeng seemed lost in memories of the past, gazing into the distance, and slowly said to her, "My mother may have told you some things about my childhood before, but I'll tell you in more detail today—"
He stopped, as if gathering his thoughts. Ye Wenyu stared blankly at his imposing figure, feeling as if she were standing next to a huge secret. For many years, she had neither spoken nor asked, but now, she finally had the chance to meet him and learn the secret.
