The pedestrians who were originally hurrying by stopped and watched the excitement. Ye Wenyu felt like a monkey in a circus, being watched and talked about.
She straightened up, covering half of her burning face, instinctively trying to hide. Her face had swelled up rapidly, like a steamed bun.
"You think you can run away? Not so easy!" The woman grabbed her arm again, raised her hand towards her other cheek, and with a "slap," another vicious slap was delivered.
You shouldn't hit someone in the face, but she got slapped twice today!
At this moment, she felt like a rat in the street, utterly humiliated.
Moreover, the blow was extremely ruthless and forceful. Ye Wenyu felt a burning pain on her face and a salty, fishy taste in her mouth. She wiped it with her hand and realized that her mouth was bleeding.
A young man who was watching the commotion probably thought Ye Wenyu was pretty and, feeling sorry for her, angrily shouted at the woman who hit her, "Why are you hitting people for no reason? Don't you have any sense of the law? We're calling the police."
"The law?" The woman who hit her sneered, pointed at Ye Wenyu, and said to everyone, "Of course I'm talking about the law. This woman stole my man and destroyed my family. Do you think she deserves to be hit? If you want to call the police, go ahead. I also want to wait for the police to come and get an explanation."
As he spoke, he rushed up to Ye Wenyu and kicked her viciously in the stomach. Ye Wenyu groaned, clutching her stomach and crouching down in agony. The extreme pain almost made her gasp for breath. This was retribution! What was bound to happen would happen. Let Lin Tingfeng's wife beat me to death! That way, I wouldn't be in so much pain.
Tears began to flow from her eyes without her noticing, and the quiet onlookers started gossiping, "So she's a mistress, no wonder she got beaten by the first wife!" "Such a lovely young girl, so young and beautiful, why would she become a mistress?" "You don't understand, it's these young and beautiful girls who love to be mistresses. If you tell her to find someone younger, she won't do it. Young people don't have money, only older people have money."
Those words were like needles, pricking Ye Wenyu's ears and also pricking the hearts of others.
Perhaps provoked by the onlookers, Lin Tingfeng's wife rushed towards Ye Wenyu and began punching and kicking her. Ye Wenyu covered her head with her hands, enduring the blows. A large chunk of her hair was torn out, her shoulder burned with pain, and she felt as if one of her ribs was broken.
She's probably going to get beaten to death here today!
Fists rained down like a storm. Time seemed to stand still; Ye Wenyu's vision blurred. She felt as if she were about to be beaten to death. A man in the crowd, unable to bear the sight, rushed forward, pulled the first wife away, and shouted at Lin Tingfeng's wife, "Stop hitting her! She'll die! You don't want to go to jail, do you?!" The first wife finally stopped, but she was still panting heavily, glaring fiercely at Ye Wenyu as if she wanted to devour her alive.
Ye Wenyu was curled up in a ball, hugging her body with both hands, her face covered in blood, looking very frightening.
The man said to the others, "Everyone, let's go. What's there to see? She's a mistress, but it's not a capital offense. Maybe that married man lied to her."
The onlookers thought he made sense, and they slowly dispersed while discussing it. Lin Tingfeng's wife also drove away, cursing.
The surroundings quieted down, leaving only Ye Wenyu. She was covered in dirt, her clothes were torn, a large clump of hair had been pulled out, and a large piece of her scalp had been ripped off. But she didn't care about her injuries. Because this place was too close to the school, she was afraid that her classmates would see her. So, she straightened up with lightning speed, nodded and bowed to the man who had helped her to express her gratitude, and then, like a wounded little animal, she ran quickly towards her home.
Back home, she locked the door and, ignoring her wounds, sat alone on the sofa, silently shedding tears.
The room was dark, with no windows or lights on, much like her life at that moment.
Ye Wenyu sat there blankly, like a wooden or stone sculpture, for the entire afternoon. Because of the injuries on her face and body, she missed two classes that afternoon.
She had no appetite to cook until it got dark. She was covered in grime and her hair was ashen. It was past 11 p.m. when she heard the door lock click and knew that Lin Tingfeng had returned.
She remained seated there, motionless, like a wooden statue, as if her soul had left her body.
Lin Tingfeng stood at the door and called out gently, "Xiaoyu—" He seemed to be in a good mood today, his tone was cheerful, and he had a rare smile on his face.
Ye Wenyu did not answer. She seemed deaf and mute. Her wounds had stopped bleeding and scabbed over on their own, but what about the shadows and pain in her heart? Like the huge shadow of the living room sofa, it was like dark blood, astonishingly large.
Something between her and Lin Tingfeng was broken and could never be repaired.
The two of them can never go back to the way things were.
She stared blankly in one direction, lost in thought.
Lin Tingfeng, finding his calls unanswered, muttered to himself, "So late, still not back?" His smile vanished, his voice suddenly rose, and his tone turned angry. He assumed she had gone out to dinner with a male friend again, like last time, and hadn't returned yet.
Hearing him speak like that, Ye Wenyu trembled, her face turning deathly pale in an instant. She remembered his authoritarianism and cruelty. Did he think his orders from yesterday hadn't worked? Did he think she had disobeyed him again today, going on a date with a man until late at night and not coming home?
With a loud "smack," a fist slammed heavily against the wall. Lin Tingfeng had smashed the light switch with his fist! The light, like water, filled the entire room, and Lin Tingfeng finally saw Ye Wenyu sitting on the living room sofa like a clay Buddha. He was stunned, and the anger on his face vanished instantly, replaced by guilt and unease.
"I'm sorry, I thought you hadn't come back." He quickly walked to her side and apologized.
Ye Wenyu remained silent.
She saw his hand; when he slammed the wall, he must have used too much force, because the knuckles were broken and bleeding.
He was a terrifying man; she felt as if she had just crossed a chasm, and the two of them were suddenly torn apart.
Her body trembled, a chill slowly rising up her spine. Let alone his wife suddenly appearing and humiliating her in the street, just the thought of Lin Tingfeng being with him was terrifying.
Lin Tingfeng sat down next to her, softened his tone, and gently asked, "Why didn't you turn on the lights when you got home? I sent you a WeChat message this afternoon, but you didn't reply. You also didn't answer my calls later."
