Chapter 29 Steamed Cake
By 7 p.m., the cassava soup was sold out.
Later, a customer who had come specifically to try it asked, "Boss, do you still have tapioca soup?"
Tang Yiyi shook her head, "Sorry, they're sold out."
Before packing up and closing the shop, Tang Yiyi ordered ten kilograms of cassava on her phone, which cost her over two hundred yuan. This same-city delivery service guarantees the freshness of the goods.
The cassava that many customers are praising today was bought from this store.
Xiaoyu was sweeping the floor with a broom, muttering to himself, "Cassava...I really want to eat it."
Tang Yiyi patted his head, "We can eat cassava tomorrow."
Around 8:30, after closing the shop and locking the doors, she took Xiaoyu home.
After returning home, Xiaoyu went to wash up and go to bed.
Tang Yiyi was thinking of making a dessert for Xiaoyu to take to school the next day.
I don't have many dessert ingredients and molds at home, so I took some eggs and separated the egg whites from the yolks. Then I melted the butter in a double boiler. I added granulated sugar to the separated egg yolks, then whisked the egg yolks with an egg beater. I added the melted butter and whisked it a few more times.
Prepare fresh milk, pour it in, and continue stirring. Then sift in the flour and stir. Since I didn't have lemon juice, I added a few drops of vinegar while whisking. Add the sugar to the whisked egg whites in several batches. Whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form, then fold them into the egg yolks and stir well. Finally, turn on the rice cooker.
Steaming would take a while, so Tang Yiyi went to the balcony to tidy up her clothes and then to the bathroom to wash up.
She came out of the bathroom and put her clothes in the washing machine. The steamed cake wasn't ready yet, so she went to the sofa, grabbed a notebook and pen, and started writing down tomorrow's ingredient list.
She makes a detailed list of ingredients, noting what she needs to buy, so she can quickly buy the ingredients at the market the next day without wasting time.
With years of cooking experience, Tang Yiyi estimated that it was almost done. She glanced at the steamed cake, which was golden and fluffy, and felt slightly soft when pressed with chopsticks. She just needed it to cool down before putting it in the refrigerator.
The weather has passed its hottest point, so food left in the refrigerator overnight won't spoil.
The cake was soft and springy. Tang Yiyi took a knife, cut it into small pieces, and put them into a lunchbox for Xiaoyu to take to school tomorrow.
If it weren't for the fact that eating dessert at night can easily cause cavities, she would insist on trying a piece to taste it.
It was another beautiful day. Before dawn, Tang Yiyi got up early. Xiaoyu was sleeping soundly, snoring away.
She tied her hair up and went to wash up. The original owner's hair wasn't long, making it easy to comb.
Seeing the water in the pot boil, she put the wontons in to cook, adding a few drops of oil as she went. After cooking for a few minutes, the wontons were done, and the meat inside changed color. Finally, she sprinkled chopped green onions on top and took them out of the pot. The clear soup wontons were very fragrant, as were the handmade ones.
Before she could call Xiaoyu, Xiaoyu came out of the room.
Still half-asleep and groggy, wearing her pajamas, she asked, "Sister, what's for breakfast?"
Seeing his adorable, round face, Tang Yiyi smiled, "Wonton."
"Then I'm going to change my clothes." Xiaoyu ran back into the room.
The mornings are a rare time for the siblings to spend together, a heartwarming moment.
Xiao Yu sat obediently in the chair, eating wontons. The wontons were small, one bite at a time. The thin wrappers were filled with many wontons, soaking up the broth, and the flavorful aroma spread between his lips and teeth.
A short while later, Xiaoyu finished eating the wontons.
Tang Yiyi got up and went to the refrigerator to get the cake. She opened the lunchbox lid, smelled it, and found that the aroma hadn't changed, and the color was still a tempting golden yellow.
She handed Xiaoyu a piece of cake, which Xiaoyu took and bit into.
What a soft and fluffy cake! It's fragrant, soft, and has a wonderful eggy aroma, yet it's also chewy.
Xiao Yu finished a piece in a few bites.
She put the lunchbox containing the cake into Xiaoyu's schoolbag, zipped it up, and told him, "Take the cake to school and share it with your teachers and classmates."
Okay~
Tang Yiyi took the cake that couldn't fit in the container to Grandma Li downstairs.
The bowl contained half a cake, golden and beautiful.
She went up and knocked on the door, "Grandma."
Soon, Grandma Li came to open the door. "Yiyi, Xiaoyu, what brings you here so early?"
"I made some cake and brought it over for Grandma and you to eat," she said, taking the bowl over. Inside lay a beautiful cake with a rich eggy aroma.
Grandma Li was stunned and exclaimed, "This cake is really well made, just as good as those from bakeries outside. Yi Yi, you could easily open your own bakery!"
Grandma Li then accepted it with a smile and thanked her repeatedly.
Then he asked, "Yiyi, how's business at the restaurant lately?"
"It's alright," Tang Yiyi said optimistically.
After chatting for a few minutes, Tang Yiyi told Grandma Li, "Grandma, I've taken Xiaoyu to school."
"Okay, be careful."
Lili pinched her nose and finished eating the rice noodles; they were a bit too salty.
Grandma Li noticed her granddaughter's face was all scrunched up. She realized the child hadn't eaten much for breakfast. This child was very picky; she wouldn't eat if the food was even slightly salty or bland.
Lili stared at the cake in the bowl. It was such a beautiful piece, almost like a cake carefully arranged in a bakery. "Grandma, where did this cake come from?"
"It was given to us by your sister Yiyi."
There were four cakes in total. Lili wolfed down two of them, while Grandma Li ate one and her husband ate one. They were too old to eat too many sweets.
Lili licked her lips. She wanted to eat more, but she was already full, and her grandparents hadn't eaten yet.
With her schoolbag on her back, she went to school. "Grandma, I'm going to school!"
Grandma Li quickly said, "Wait a minute, Grandma will take you there."
Lili was in a good mood after eating the cake that Sister Yiyi gave her.
I glanced up and saw Tang Xiaoyu, and I envied him even more.
Most students can't sit still; they play and joke around even when they're not in class.
A few classmates came over to play with Xiaoyu, and someone accidentally bumped into Xiaoyu's desk.
With a "clatter," the lunchbox opened, revealing a golden cake inside.
The students who were playing and roughhousing: "..."
"Whose cake is this? It smells delicious!"
"Can I pay for it?"
"..."
Many people rushed forward and frantically grabbed the cake.
Xiaoyu was very angry. He quickly picked up the lunchbox and protected the cake, saying, "This is the cake my sister brought!"
Lili ran over angrily and said, "Tang Xiaoyu's sister brought him a cake, let's see who dares to take it!"
Sister Yi is good to their family, so she should be good to Tang Xiaoyu too.
But a few mischievous students, drawn by the aroma of the food, ignored the warnings and rushed forward to grab it.
Fortunately, many students were sensible and quickly stepped forward to stop them.
Some students even said, "Go find Teacher Wang right away!"
Teacher Wang is getting hot water in her office. She talks a lot during class every day, and her throat is always uncomfortable.
While I was getting a drink of water, a student from his class ran in without even saying "report," and blurted out, "Teacher Wang, there's a fight going on in the classroom!"
Teacher Wang almost spat out his water, clearly terrified.
Tang Yiyi was preparing ingredients for lunch when she suddenly received a call from Teacher Wang. "Teacher Wang, what's up?"
Why is her eyelid twitching so fast?
"A classmate got into a fight with Xiaoyu!" Teacher Wang said anxiously.
Tang Yiyi felt a chill run down her spine and quickly asked, "How is the situation now?"
"I'm coming to school right away."
The original owner swore at her parents' graves that she would take good care of Xiaoyu until he grew up.
Now, anything that happens to Xiaoyu really affects her.
Before going to school, she entrusted the restaurant to Song Manzhao.
Song Man patted her chest and assured her, "Sister Yi Yi, you can rest assured that you can leave the restaurant to me."
When they arrived at the infirmary, they saw a nurse cleaning Xiaoyu's forehead wound, and another student with a similarly bruised and swollen face was being treated by another nurse.
Another parent rushed over, immediately shouting angrily, "Who hit my precious son? Come out and apologize and compensate me!"
Upon hearing this, Teacher Wang couldn't help but frown and said directly, "Sheng Dong's parents, it was your Sheng Dong who stole someone else's cake!"
At this moment, Xiaoyu also said, "Sister, Shengdong is trying to steal the cake you brought me!"
The intention of having Xiaoyu bring the cake to school was to share it and improve relationships.
But I never expected this to happen.
Sheng Dong's parents clearly didn't believe it, their eyes wide. "Impossible! My Sheng Dong is such a good boy, how could he possibly fight with his classmates over a piece of cake!"
Teacher Wang is quite exhausted. The students are difficult to manage, and some parents are even more unreasonable.
She took out her phone and pulled up the surveillance footage. "This is the classroom's surveillance video. Please take a look."
The video shows that as soon as Xiaoyu put the lunchbox containing the cake into his desk, several mischievous students came over and bumped into his desk.
The lunchbox fell open, revealing the cake. This attracted a few mischievous boys, and when Xiaoyu tried to protect the cake, they came over and tried to snatch it.
The more Tang Yiyi looked at Xiaoyu, the more shocked and angry she became, and she hugged him to comfort him.
The parents of Shengdong's parents changed their expressions, feeling an indescribable embarrassment.
At this moment, Sheng Dong whispered, "What's wrong with me eating just one piece of cake? It's Tang Xiaoyu's fault for not letting me have any!"
Sheng Dong's father gritted his teeth, wanting to beat this brat, and said fiercely, "Apologize to your classmate right now, and we'll pay for the medical expenses."
After the child apologized, Tang Yiyi remained unmoved, not even blinking.
Seeing that something was wrong with her, Teacher Wang asked, "Sister Xiaoyu, how do you plan to handle this?"
Tang Yiyi said coldly, "The child apologized, but where are the adults?"
Now, Xiaoyu only has her as a relative, someone who can support him and give him face.
Sheng Dong's parents were somewhat unhappy, but they thought that if this matter escalated, it would affect their child's future years at Xingguang Elementary School.
So they sincerely apologized to Xiaoyu.
The matter was resolved, and Teacher Wang told her to take Xiaoyu home and let him rest for a day.
Xiaoyu was clearly depressed and sullen.
"Xiaoyu, why are you unhappy?" Tang Yiyi asked.
"You spilled the lunchbox, and the cake my sister made is dirty, so we can't eat it!" Xiaoyu became more and more agitated as she spoke, and she looked like she was about to cry.
So that's how it is. Tang Yiyi felt a pang of sadness. "It's okay, even if the cake is gone, I can still make another one. As long as Xiaoyu is safe and sound, that's all that matters!"
"Xiaoyu, what do you want to eat for lunch?"
"Anything is fine, I love whatever my sister makes."
Tang Yiyi brought Xiaoyu back. When Song Man in the shop saw her, she looked at her like she was a savior. "Sister Yiyi, the boss who delivered the cassava is here."
"Okay, I understand."
The cassava looked good; they were all very fresh, with no dents or rotten spots.
Tang Yiyi paid the other half of the money with satisfaction.
