Chapter 22
On weekends, the bullfrog restaurant is always crowded with customers even if you arrive at five o'clock.
This is a very popular little Hutong restaurant, not decorated in a very special way, it relies entirely on the taste to win the heart.
The waitress was a woman in her forties wearing an apron. She asked in a full voice, "What do you want to eat?"
The menu was only two pages long and there wasn't much to choose from.
Zhang Jusong looked at Xia Zhiheng: "Then how about the signature bullfrog with Chinese cabbage in soup?"
"I'll do whatever you say."
The waitress wrote something on the paper and asked, "Do you like spicy food?"
If you are a local, most people would choose non-spicy or slightly spicy. But Zhang Jusong has always been very confident that he can handle spicy food with just a hint of spiciness.
So she said with great enthusiasm: "Eat! Medium spicy."
"Very spicy? Are you sure?" the waitress confirmed in her hometown accent.
"That's right."
"Okay."
Guests at other tables called for the waitress, and the waitress hurried away, busy greeting other guests.
Xia Zhiheng opened a pack of tissues and carefully wiped the table in front of Zhang Jusong.
It was a noisy restaurant, but the surrounding tables were filled with people chatting and laughing, making this table seem even quieter.
After wiping the table, Xia Zhiheng caught a glimpse of Zhang Jusong's tightly pursed lips. He subconsciously frowned, "What's wrong, sister? Is there something bothering you?"
Zhang Jusong glanced at Xia Zhiheng quickly, then looked away.
"No."
Should I ask or not? It feels a bit strange. Should I just ask her confidently, "Hey, do you have a girlfriend?" If she were Xia Zhiheng, she would definitely roll her eyes and say, "It's none of your business."
But she had already promised Anne.
And...she also wanted to know the answer.
As he was hesitating, an iron pot full of bullfrogs was placed on the alcohol lamp.
"The food is here."
The dried fruit bullfrog arrived at the right time, just like the physical education teacher had to announce the postponement of the 800-meter running test in the afternoon on the day of the test.
Zhang Jusong picked up a piece of bullfrog leg and said, "It looks delicious."
She likes to eat the frog leg meat part for the simple reason that it is meaty and not hard to chew.
The dry pot bullfrog here is really good, tender and fragrant, and the soup is bubbling under the heat of the alcohol in the meal. Although it is hot, it is very satisfying to eat!
After eating two more bites of bullfrog, Zhang Jusong began to feel something was wrong. Why was there a heat rising from his mouth? Ah, it seemed that even his teeth were burning.
When Xia Zhiheng saw her like this, he immediately got up and went to the freezer to get a bottle of iced Coke.
The can was torn open, Zhang Jusong quickly took it, and took a few big gulps before he finally felt better.
"Why is it so spicy?"
She complained.
Xia Zhiheng laughed and couldn't help teasing her: "Sister, you look so cute when you are touched by the spiciness."
Her cheeks were flushed, even the tip of her nose was red, and she looked so beautiful that people wanted to bully her.
"Don't talk nonsense!" Zhang Jusong threw a glare, "Eat yours."
Xia Zhiheng held back his laughter, poured water into the teacup, picked up a frog leg, rinsed it in the tea, and put it into Zhang Jusong's bowl.
"Okay, it should be better after running it through water. You can try it."
Spicy food always whets people's appetite. Before he knew it, Zhang Jusong had a second bowl of rice and even tried to soak some rice in the soup. He drank another bottle of Sprite.
Zhang Jusong was full and put down his chopsticks, looking a little hesitant.
She cleared her throat: "Um... I want to ask you something, please don't be angry, okay?"
"You said, I'm not angry." Xia Zhiheng raised his eyebrows.
There was silence for three seconds.
Zhang Jusong spoke very slowly, and his voice was even quieter: "Do you—do you have a girlfriend?"
Xia Zhiheng looked puzzled: "Sister, what did you say? It's too noisy, I can't hear you."
The guests at the next table were drinking and chatting. With this noise as company, it was understandable that I couldn't hear it.
Zhang Jusong raised his voice slightly: "I asked you if you have a girlfriend?"
Xia Zhiheng leaned forward and said, "Sister, I'm sorry, I still didn't hear you clearly. Are you asking me if there is anything?"
"Do you have a girlfriend?"
With a lion's roar, the guests at the surrounding tables immediately fell silent.
The people drinking at the table next to him even whistled: "Young man, say yes to her."
...This is treating this scene as a girl pursuing a boy and confessing her love to him.
Zhang Jusong covered his face with his hands. It’s over. Is it too late to run away now?
She moved her hand a little further to look at Xia Zhiheng.
Unexpectedly, he didn't smile, but frowned instead.
There was silence for a moment.
Seeing that there was nothing exciting to watch, the diners around looked away and continued talking.
Zhang Jusong lowered his hand from covering his face, touched his hair, and said awkwardly: "Well, a classmate asked me to ask..."
"Do you want to know?"
Xia Zhiheng interrupted her, his eyes burning.
How could he not think about it? Zhang Jusong looked away uncomfortably and poked the remaining grains of rice with his chopsticks.
"Yeah." She nodded imperceptibly.
Xia Zhiheng's voice was somewhat suggestive: "Sister, isn't it impolite to ask someone a question without looking at them?"
Zhang Jusong raised his eyes.
Amid the clamor of voices, her reflection was the only thing in the boy's bright eyes.
"I don't have a girlfriend."
Zhang Jusong blinked and was about to breathe a sigh of relief when he clearly heard him say, "But, I have someone I like."
She was stunned for a moment, then lowered her head and continued to poke the rice grains.
"When did it happen?" She tried to control her voice and make it sound calmer.
Xia Zhiheng held his chin with one hand and said seriously, "I have liked her for a long time, before I graduated from high school."
She sounds like a female classmate from junior high or high school, Zhang Jusong thought.
She lowered her eyes, and the rice grains had been mashed into a paste.
"Oh, that's right." She said, "A girl that you like must be a very good person, right?"
Xia Zhiheng's voice was firm: "She is the best person who has ever appeared in my life."
Hearing this, Zhang Jusong silently tightened his chopsticks.
There was a long silence.
"Sister...you don't really believe it, do you?" Xia Zhiheng suddenly laughed, "I mean, you can use this excuse to fool those people."
Zhang Jusong looked at him angrily and raised his hand to hit his shoulder: "Xia! Zhi! Heng!"
"Hahaha, sorry, sorry." Xia Zhiheng not only did not hide, but came closer and let her hit him.
His puppy eyes were smiling like a child who had succeeded in a prank.
"I just couldn't help teasing you."
Besides, this is just a small punishment, Xia Zhiheng thought.
Looking at the angry girl, he quickly begged for mercy: "Sister, I was wrong, I was wrong."
This boy is still acting like a spoiled brat? It's really unbearable.
Zhang Jusong glared at him and used his chopsticks like a knife: "Don't do this again in the future."
A hint of cunning flashed in Xia Zhiheng's eyes.
"But sister, are you unhappy to hear my answer?"
"Who is happy?" Zhang Jusong stiffened his neck and refused to admit it.
He suddenly leaned over, and a handsome face suddenly enlarged before his eyes.
"Really? But your eyes—"
“I’m laughing.”
