Chapter 10 Deliveryman (10)
"Whitey, where are we going?"
After walking only a few steps, the old lady became unhappy and stood there sullenly. She had been in high spirits just moments before, but now she was listless and looked dejected.
Bai Ye didn't know what she had done to upset the old lady, but she still spoke softly, "Aunt Yao, let's hold on a little longer. Once we get into the lobby, I'll find you a seat."
After thinking about it, I felt it wasn't appropriate.
If we leave someone at the designated spot and have them go get a number themselves, what if that person runs away?
Being in a hospital where you're unfamiliar with the place, who knows what might happen?
Then he said, "Aunt Yao, come with me, we'll get a number, and then I'll take you to see a doctor."
The old woman didn't speak, looking at the sky and the ground, bewildered and helpless.
Bai Ye sighed and continued to help the person forward. Once inside the outpatient hall, they immediately went to queue at the registration machine.
The line wasn't long; there were only three or four people waiting ahead of us.
Bai Ye breathed a sigh of relief and was about to rest for a while when a sharp scream rang out beside him.
He was so frightened that he stepped back, pulling the old lady along with him. He turned his head and saw that the person who had been standing properly in line next to him had his body contorted, and the sharp screams coming from that person were coming from him.
"What's going on?"
Bai Ye looked up and waved repeatedly, "Security! Security! There's something going on here."
The security guard stood quietly at the gate, mechanically checking items entering and leaving, seemingly deaf.
The others standing on the side of the line remained unmoved.
The symptoms of the person in front of me seemed so commonplace.
But Bai Ye couldn't do it. Seeing the man fall to the ground and convulse, he immediately went forward to check on the situation.
"Could it be epilepsy? What should we do? What should we do—"
Bai Ye was dumbfounded.
There was no one in front of me; it was clearly a long, ugly weasel.
The weasel rolled on the ground, as if being whipped by something invisible, howling incessantly. Finally, it lay on the ground, barely breathing, gasping for air.
"you……"
"puff--"
A hot, foul odor wafted out, and pale yellow gas rose in wisps, instantly polluting the air around the ticket dispenser.
The weasel farted!
Recently, while standing at Baiye Station, he was caught off guard and inhaled a whole dose, immediately making his head spin.
Before he fell, he tried to turn around to see where the old woman was. In his blurry vision, he saw her waving her hands, as if she were performing a shamanistic ritual.
...
Bai Ye was woken up by a cacophony of sounds around him, like tens of thousands of ducks quacking and squawking against his ear.
I opened my eyes and was met with a mallard duck, its quacking still going on.
So it's not a hallucination?
Ducks? Where did these ducks come from?
Wait! Aren't I in the hospital?
old lady!
Bai Ye suddenly woke up, sat up abruptly from the ground, and looked around for the old lady.
This sight is simply breathtaking.
The hospital was still the same mental hospital, but all the patients and their families who used to walk around the outpatient building were gone.
At this moment, the hospital is full of animals.
A mallard duck quacks around, its calls filling the air; a lamb struts across the ticket machine, its front hooves raised, pressing buttons repeatedly; and two quails stand by the window, arguing incessantly…
Bai Ye turned towards the entrance of the outpatient hall, where the security guard had been standing, but now a brown bear had taken his place.
The brown bear held an iron rod in its hand, and every now and then it would poke the backpack that passed the seatbelt and say, "Safe, through."
Bai Ye was in a daze, his mind racing. It was hard to believe, yet he had to accept that this might be reality.
Just like how he himself turned into a white-haired dog, everyone in the mental hospital also turned into animals.
But why?
How come everyone suddenly changed shape?
Actually, I wasn't taking on escort services for medical appointments, but rather zoo-related business?
"I can't figure it out, so I'm not going to think about it anymore. It's more important to find the old lady."
Bai Ye shook off those strange thoughts and searched for the old woman among the animals.
Look at this one, it doesn't seem like it.
That one isn't right either.
We searched upstairs and downstairs for a long time, but couldn't find a single hair.
Bai Ye squatted down against the wall, clutching his head, his head starting to ache. "Now I know why the consultation time is four hours. It takes three hours just to find the old lady."
With so many animals, some of them strangely shaped and others ferocious and terrifying, how are we supposed to manage this?
"Deadly Delivery warmly reminds you that your customer's appointment time is in two hours. Please hurry up and see the doctor."
Bai Ye paused, somewhat uncertain. Two hours?
When I came in, it was only four hours in.
I took out my phone and checked the countdown; it was indeed within two hours.
After thinking it over and over, feeling helpless and incredulous, I thought, "So, I just fainted for two hours like this?"
Two hours!
Bai Ye dared not imagine where the old lady would wander off to in those two hours.
He couldn't help but look towards the main gate, wondering if the person had already run out.
"I'm doomed. Not only will I not get my errand fee, but if the old lady gets lost, Ms. Yao might kill me."
How strange, if he has murderous intent, then...
Bai Ye couldn't stand still any longer and rushed towards the main gate. He needed to find the old lady; he couldn't lose his client.
Just as Bai Ye reached the gate, he was stopped by a brown bear.
He brandished the iron rod and said fiercely, "You're not allowed to leave until the doctor's treatment is finished."
"Brother, what do you mean by that?"
"Go back and continue your medical treatment."
Bai Ye, however, saw a glimmer of hope. Grabbing the brown bear's paw, he disregarded his fear and asked, "Big brother, do you mean that anyone who comes into the hospital for treatment and hasn't finished their appointment won't be able to leave? Does 'can't leave' mean everyone? Patients and their accompanying family members, everyone is stuck here, right?"
Perhaps because Bai Ye was too excited, the brown bear kindly explained, "Yes, you can only leave with a doctor's diagnosis. You should go back and see a doctor."
Clearly, the brown bear mistook White Night for a patient.
Bai Ye smiled and nodded repeatedly, feeling relieved.
The old lady couldn't leave, so she's still in this outpatient building.
So the question is, how do you find her in such a large building?
Shouting directly is impossible; the animals here either speak human language or animal language, and each one has a louder voice than the last, so his little voice would be completely drowned out.
Asking him won't work; I just tried, and these animals completely ignore him. It's as if he's some kind of NPC who suddenly appeared out of nowhere, and he's not important at all.
After much thought, Bai Ye could only search based on the old woman's physical characteristics.
He began to recall the old lady's appearance, her clothes, and even her words and actions.
"The old lady's hair was silver with a little bit of gray in the middle, and it was a bit naturally curly."
"Her eyes were very clear and exceptionally clean, as bright as mountain spring water. Her nose was small and straight, her mouth was delicate, and there seemed to be a mole at the corner of her mouth?"
"The clothes she's wearing, um... the top is a red, yellow, and blue sweater with polka dot buttons. The bottom is loose cotton-linen trousers, the color is ginger yellow? Or maybe orange?"
"Oh right, her slippers have pink rhinestones on them, and Sailor Moon on them!"
Bai Ye was very grateful to her brain at this moment, as her memory was not bad and she remembered it almost perfectly.
“These animals are all transformed humans; they keep changing but never change back to the same thing. It’s like turning into a white dog; some facial features and physical behaviors are always similar. If we look for them based on the old lady’s characteristics, we should be able to quickly filter them out…”
Bai Ye went to the service desk, asked the goat nurse inside for a simple hospital map, and then divided it into several areas, using the stairs and elevators as boundaries, and checked each area one by one.
To make sure they didn't backtrack, Bai Ye consulted the goat nurse again in the middle of the night.
Upon reaching the third floor, Bai Ye spotted a colorful lizard next to the water dispenser. It was crouching there, one paw scratching at the dispenser countertop.
Dip your paw in the grease, then stick it in your mouth and lick it.
Then dip it in, then lick it...
Bai Ye wasn't sure if the lizard was an old lady, but it was the most colorful animal he had ever found.
He dared not disturb the lizard beside the water dispenser, so he could only slowly incline over...
"Aunt Yao?"
Just as they were about to get close, Bai Ye called out.
Startled, the lizard instantly retracted its claws, its originally colorful skin turning grayish-brown, and quickly turned and scrambled towards the end of the corridor.
"Oh, Aunt Yao—"
Bai Ye shouted and chased after it. Just as he was about to catch up, the lizard suddenly climbed up the wall. It was a three-story vertical wall, and the lizard climbed down it.
When he reached the end of the road and leaned over the railing to look down, he could only see a lizard's tail, lost among the large herd of animals moving back and forth.
"..."
Is this world really rational?
This kind of escort service is not as good as the previous wedding arrangements.
Although those strange creatures often turn around, they are still human beings, and at least you can tell who is who.
Now?
Besides maintaining a smile, Bai Ye could only try her best to smile.
"Workers have the spirit of working, and migrant workers are the best of the best."
"I love going to work; it makes me happy."
"Why are my eyes often filled with tears? Because of my deep love for the workers."
"Go get a job, a job that can't be defined, a job where you can't see tomorrow, a job that drives you crazy."
"It doesn't matter, I don't care..."
The phone countdown continued, time ticking away. Bai Ye searched and searched, and then just gave up.
He thought of his 1.1 health points, the huge loan of 1600 he still owed, and the fact that Ms. Yao might be coming to kill him in an hour...
Bai Ye smiled, and smiled at the world.
"That's it, deduct my pay, let me die, forget it."
"DeadMe Delivery warmly reminds you that the previous order has begun settlement—"
"Settlement complete. Player has received 300 and two mysterious red envelopes. Would you like to exchange them for life points? Would you like to redeem the red envelopes?"
Bai Ye paused in his steps.
This is bizarre; it really knows how to manipulate people's psychology. Just when you're about to give up, it suddenly gives you hope again.
How did they manage to time it so perfectly!
But what to do? 300 coins is equivalent to 3 health points, and I shamefully felt tempted.
Bai Ye instantly abandoned his "give up" mentality and opened the screen to check the information bar.
The 300 Ghost Coins gleamed. He hesitated, wondering whether to pay off the loan first or exchange them directly for life points.
"Let's think about this again. Let's first see what's in the two red envelopes."
However, when he touched the red envelope, he couldn't open it and couldn't see the contents inside.
[Player triggered a red envelope; would you like to redeem the corresponding reward?]
A mechanical sound rang out, followed by a new status update on the screen that read "Strange Convenience Store".
"..."
What a low-class name. At least choose something like "XX Mall".
But it's a convenience store, it should sell something. Let's go in and take a look.
As Bai Ye entered the eerie convenience store, a rough, makeshift breeze hit him.
The shelves were made of plastic, and only seven or eight items were displayed on them. Under each item was a card with a handwritten price.
That's not all; the entire shop is made of wood, but due to years of neglect, it has been infested with woodworms.
Bai Ye lay on the shelf, staring at the pillar directly in front of him. If his eyesight wasn't deceiving him, he thought he could see termites.
"How weird, is your convenience store a knock-off?" Bai Ye couldn't help but complain.
