Chapter 93 Hospital Resident Trainees (11)
After finishing lunch, Bai Ye was preparing to return to the inpatient department. While waiting for the elevator, he suddenly noticed something wriggling in a flowerpot next to him.
And that thing had a beautiful tail.
Bai Ye stared at the tail again and again, quite certain that it was a reptile.
He initially thought it was another case of a mentally ill patient mutating, given that the strange creatures found at the Sixth Hospital were mostly snakes. These included common species like the red-banded snake, black-browed rat snake, ball python, five-step snake, silver-ringed snake, and bamboo viper.
Of course, there are other animals as well, such as brown bears, mallards, red squirrels, crows, and calico cats.
Out of a doctor's mindset, Bai Ye went over to check, just in case it was a patient who had run down from his floor. Or even if it was one of his patients.
This could result in joint liability.
When the leaves were parted, a colorful mass inside turned out to be a lizard.
Moreover, the more I look at it, the more familiar it seems, especially those eyes.
"Aunt Yao?" Bai Ye asked uncertainly.
The lizard was about to run away, but upon hearing the name, it turned around in confusion, looked around, and suddenly leaped up, climbing directly onto Bai Ye's body and reaching the top of his head.
Bai Ye subconsciously raised his hand to protect her, and was even more certain in his heart. He said helplessly, "Aunt Yao, the young man who accompanied you to the doctor is probably frantically looking for someone. Be good, I'll take you there."
"White hair?"
The weight above my head disappeared, and an old lady appeared behind me.
The old lady looked much older, but her spirits were as good as ever. She grabbed Bai Ye's hand and vigorously rubbed his face, even groping around his jawline.
"White Hair, you're wearing a human skin."
Bai Ye was momentarily unsure whether the old lady was truly confused.
Is this still the same person who saved me in the middle of the night back then?
"Aunt Yao, I am a human being."
“No, you’re not human, you’re a white-haired dog.” As she spoke, the old woman shook her head again, her eyes gradually filled with confusion. “How did you turn into a snake again? It’s all green and so ugly.”
Bai Ye was startled and immediately turned to look at the restroom next door, where there was a large mirror.
He thought he would see himself transformed into an anaconda in the mirror, but he didn't; he remained human with a human face and body.
"Aunt Yao, can you see through the surface to the essence?"
After saying that, Bai Ye felt something was wrong. He was a human being, and his essence was that of a human!
The old lady felt great pity and stroked Bai Ye's hand, saying, "It's all scales, it looks so ugly, not as clean as a white-haired dog."
Bai Ye tried to communicate, but all her attempts ended in failure.
In the end, they could only help the old lady to the outpatient building and find the escort.
"Watch closely, Aunt Yao is quite agile. Don't try to fool her like an ordinary old lady," Bai Ye instructed.
The escort nodded repeatedly; one time was scary enough, how could he dare to relax a second time?
Bai Ye didn't pay any more attention and went straight back to her shift in the inpatient department.
As it was nearing the end of the workday, he and Zhang Tao were called away by Yan Wang to assist in the operating room.
Practice makes perfect, and with the lead surgeon being quite daring, the two have already begun to help with some basic surgical procedures. As for postoperative suturing and other such tasks, these are entirely entrusted to the two resident trainees.
It was exhausting, almost to the point of death. Resident trainees had to maintain a high level of concentration throughout the entire surgery to avoid being called upon to do other work at any time.
But it was a bittersweet experience, as I learned more and more surgical skills.
Bai Ye even had a strange feeling that with such a high frequency of entering the operating room and the continuous increase in operation time, he might be able to become a second assistant after completing his residency training.
"You really dare to dream. Even if we were qualified, we wouldn't be allowed to take the position."
On the way back, Zhang Tao laughed and used his mentor as an example again, "Look at Teacher Yao, he has had a tough journey. His abilities during his residency training were about the same as Kong Yuehan's."
In order to extract information, the group had specifically researched Yao Cong's "work history," which perfectly illustrated the saying, "For ordinary people to become doctors, hard work doesn't guarantee success."
Bai Ye nodded, "I was just saying it casually, but Teacher Yan really takes us very seriously, I can't doubt his dedication."
"Professor Yao is also innocent; at least, that's what the three of us believe."
The two had returned to the duty room. Seeing that no one was around, Zhang Tao suddenly leaned closer to Bai Ye and asked, "Couldn't you find out anything about your connections?"
Before being formally incorporated into the hospital, the integrity of the hospital, as passionate young people, has become one of the criteria for them to stay.
After all, no one is born willing to compromise their principles.
Back then, the vast majority of people who chose medical-related majors were driven by a strong passion for medicine.
Bai Ye recalled that absurd relationship and shook her head helplessly, "We have no relationship."
He then reiterated, "I truly got in based on my own merit."
Zhang Tao made it clear that he didn't believe it.
Bai Ye beckoned with his finger, signaling someone to come over.
When Zhang Tao got close, he grabbed the other man's neck and pulled him to the end of the corridor.
Bai Ye explained everything regarding the misunderstanding and some previous suspicions.
Zhang Tao was stunned after hearing this. "You mean, Director Lin is intentionally trying to get closer to you? Is it really necessary for someone as high-ranking as her?"
"It could be profitable."
Bai Ye suspected that Lin Xiaojuan might not be an ordinary ghost, or even more than a high-level ghost.
She must have known the players' identities, not just her own; the four trainees might all have their own agendas.
"Because we also mutated?" Zhang Tao quickly connected the dots and realized the secret of the four people.
None of them told each other about this, but they were constantly worried about being exposed.
This is why they definitely want to find out the truth.
Bai Ye: "I think so. The small and large pythons were taken away by the security guards and never came back. I don't know how they communicated with the family, but somehow there was no medical dispute."
A living person was carried away in front of everyone, and no one knew whether they were dead or alive.
The hospital continued to operate as usual, and no one held anyone accountable, which was terrifying.
As an immersive experience player, Zhang Tao only had a native mindset. Hearing Bai Ye's analysis, he felt increasingly disheartened.
"To be honest, I'm a little reluctant to fight for it anymore. Staying at the Sixth Hospital might not be a good thing."
Zhang Tao came from a small county town and was determined to stay in a top-tier hospital in a big city. He saw it as a symbol of ability, status, and honor.
But if this career path might conceal bloodshed and darkness, and there's a high chance he'll get himself involved, Zhang Tao is very unwilling.
"You want to quit?" Bai Ye was surprised. Was the mentality of a second-highest player really that weak?
Zhang Tao smiled wryly, "If we continue to investigate, I'm afraid I won't be able to get out. I'm thinking that after my residency training ends, I should prepare to switch tracks."
"?"
"For example, taking the civil service exam or applying for a public institution job? I think with my diligence and intelligence during my eight years of medical study, getting a job shouldn't be a problem."
Bai Ye suddenly realized, clasped his hands in a fist salute, and said, "I admire you; you've even thought of a way out."
Just then, a nurse rushed over and, seeing that both of them were there, immediately waved.
"Dr. Bai, Dr. Zhang, Director Lin has arranged for a patient to be admitted. Which of you two will take over the care of the patient?"
"Which Director Lin?" Bai Ye asked casually.
The nurse slapped the documents down and said, "Of course it's Director Lin from our ward. Who else could it be?"
Fifteen minutes later, Bai Ye met the escort again.
"So you're a doctor!"
The young man accompanying the patient was pleasantly surprised. Even though she was just a resident, he felt a sense of warmth and familiarity. "This old lady is so difficult to deal with. She even wants to be hospitalized. I've already contacted her family, and her daughter will be coming over tonight."
The young man accompanying the patient helped with the hospital admission procedures, then looked back at Bai Ye and felt at ease.
The old lady knows this young doctor? Alright, I'll get my errand fee without any problem.
Bai Ye, however, was not in a good mood. As she watched the old lady being placed in her assigned bed, and then looking at the floor number, she felt it was unbelievable.
"That's weird. I remember Aunt Yao stayed on the 23rd floor last time, right?"
The 23rd floor is part of the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology, second only to the Intensive Care Unit.
But the person in front of me is clearly getting worse, so why was he put into the mild case ward?
Lin Xiaojuan's reach is a bit too far!
But the mechanical voice didn't respond; it was as if the machine was dead.
"Bai Ye, the old lady specifically asked you to go over." Zhang Tao returned from his rounds and patted the person sitting in a daze. "Go quickly, it looks like things are about to escalate."
"Okay, I'll go take a look."
Bai Ye resigned himself to his fate, got up, and went to the ward where the old lady was.
As soon as I walked in, I heard a shout, "Take all that filthy food out, I won't eat it!"
The caregiver retorted, "These are all fresh meals, just packed into the lunchboxes. What are you saying is dirty?"
"Dirty, unpalatable, disgusting, unclean." The old lady's expression was serious, full of disgust.
Seeing that an argument was about to break out, Bai Ye signaled the nurse to take the caregiver out, while he closed the door and decided to have a good talk with the old lady.
Before I could even speak, the other person handed me a boxed lunch.
"White Hair, look at this disgusting food."
Bai Ye looked down at the food in the box: three dishes and a soup, namely scrambled eggs with tomatoes, hot and sour shredded potatoes, and sweet and sour pork.
In a bizarre world, it's perfectly normal for food to be abnormal.
But this time, even Bai Ye couldn't help but frown.
The food didn't move, there were no insect eggs, and there wasn't even a bloody scene. The entire boxed meal was impeccably clean, exactly the same as every boxed meal I had eaten in my previous life.
But the pure white rice and the flavorful stir-fried dishes had a faint fishy smell.
The closer you get, the stronger the stench becomes.
"vomit--"
Bai Ye turned around and gagged.
After recovering, his face looked extremely pale.
Even someone like him who can eat weird food without changing his expression can't stand it. What exactly is mixed into this food?
"Aunt Yao, can you tell what's in the food?" Bai Ye couldn't help but ask.
The old woman frowned, picked up her chopsticks, poked at the food a couple of times, then threw the chopsticks down and said, "Broken bones, bits of meat..."
Bai Ye was alarmed.
However, the next second, the other person shook their head and said, "None of them."
"..."
After a moment of silence, Bai Ye said, "Aunt Yao, don't joke around. Let's talk about something serious."
The old lady nodded. "Oh, seriously, look at this, it stinks, it's all chopped-up soul scraps."
"What scum?"
"Does the soul know? Humans, animals, all things have souls. Extract the soul from the body, chop it into small pieces, grind it into dust, and sprinkle it into the food as a seasoning..."
"vomit--"
Bai Ye gagged again.
The old woman looked at the pitiful white-haired creature she was going to raise and reached out to stroke it. "You've had a hard time. Being human is so hard. Not only do you have to eat other humans, but you also have to eat their souls. The more of your own kind you eat, the stronger you become."
"Aunt Yao, please stop talking."
Bai Ye could almost foresee that what followed would be even more cruel.
