Chapter 26: Brave Catherine saved her mother

Chapter 26: Brave Catherine saved her mother

According to the popular science introduction on Catherine Road, Shen Jiang learned that the world was not without any medical system as she had imagined.

However, the medical treatment here is not the Western medicine in her world. It mainly relies on magic potions made by magicians, such as those that restore physical strength and stop bleeding, and the healing magic of the light wizard, which can use the power of the God of Light to cure all diseases.

Of course, this is a treatment only the nobility can enjoy. Ordinary civilians like Catherine's mother cannot afford the expensive medical expenses and can only endure the discomfort.

Shen Jiang took the pulse of the woman lying on the bed and observed her symptoms.

To Lina, this scene was like the Black Witch sizing up her first experimental subject. She looked at her sister Katherine angrily, and found that Katherine's eyes were filled with worry, guilt, and reluctance, but not fear.

Lina could almost conclude that Catherine must have reached some kind of agreement with the black witch. Maybe she deliberately lured the terrible black witch into her home just to save her own life.

Soon, the black witch began to take action.

Seeing her roughly prying open her mother's tightly closed lips, Lina's eyes almost burst into tears. Was she planning to cut off her mother's tongue?

"No!" Lina shrieked. "If you need a test subject, I'm willing to sacrifice my life for Mom's safety. Please let her go."

Shen Jiang was very unhappy about being interrupted during her medical consultation, but after hearing what Lina said, she felt a little amused.

"Catherine, take her to the kitchen to boil some water, immediately! Don't disturb me while I'm seeing the doctor."

Catherine hesitated for only a second before decisively dragging her sister to the kitchen. Although Shen Jiang looked cute and approachable, her composure when she spoke with a serious expression was strangely convincing.

What's more, she possessed powerful fire magic, and Catherine didn't want to upset her.

Katherine pulled her sister up and walked towards the kitchen. She whispered to comfort her, "Lina, don't worry. She's a kind witch who can use herbs to save people, not a black witch."

Lina didn't believe her at all and sneered: "My beautiful but stupid sister, you are the only one who would believe such nonsense. Could it be that you brought her home because she said she could cure Mom's curse?"

Seeing her sister's look of disbelief, Catherine knew it would be difficult for her to convince her. Their relationship had changed since the day their mother fell ill. Sister Lina always believed that it was her fault that their mother was cursed by the devil.

Catherine squatted down to light the fire: "If I could, I would rather die for my mother."

Lina was stunned, looking at her silent sister, and thought: Maybe her sister will not know what regret is until she sees the family destroyed with her own eyes.

Now, their whole family is fish on the chopping board of the black witch.

When Shen Jiang rushed into the kitchen, the water was just boiling. Shen Jiang took out the ephedra he had picked today from his backpack and threw it in. After the water boiled and he removed the foam, he added licorice, almonds and other medicinal materials.

Lina's face turned green when she saw the black witch brewing the pitch-black potion from her own pot.

Shen Jiang handed the bowl of medicine to Catherine and asked her to feed it to her mother quickly. "Except me, there is no one else here who can save her. Go quickly."

Seeing her sister about to feed the potion to her mother, Lina almost went crazy: "Didn't you say you would die for Mom? Why don't you drink this horrible poison for her? Stop it!"

Catherine's hand holding the medicine bowl shook unconsciously. She was frightened by her sister's shout. She stared at her sister Lina's eyes without blinking, and resolutely drank the first sip of the dark and bitter medicine in front of her.

Lina looked at her blankly, and found that there was nothing wrong with her, so she finally stopped stopping her from feeding the medicine to her mother.

Shen Jiang pretended not to hear the conversation between the two and began to look at the family of four in front of him.

The cabin is very cozy and you can tell it's well cared for, though it's a bit messy because of the hostess's illness.

At this moment, the male owner, who had no weapon to protect him, was standing obediently in the corner.

"I saved your wife, so I'm your lifesaver," Shen Jiang said, pulling out the piece of paper with the musk deer picture printed on it from the backpack on his back. He handed it to the dejected man sitting in the corner, saying nothing. "Have you seen the one in the picture?"

Catherine's father looked up in surprise, and happened to see the paper in Shen Jiang's hand. After seeing the pattern on it clearly, he was stunned.

He had never seen such a lifelike painting before, and the animals in it were so clear that he couldn't mistake them. The short, shiny fur covered their sturdy limbs, the big, dark eyes occupied their palm-sized faces, and there were those eye-catching big round ears.

"This is the Mule Deer in the Misty Forest!"

Shen Jiang had never heard of the animal he was talking about, so he couldn't help but confirm again: "Look carefully, it looks the same, right?!"

"Of course, I am an experienced old hunter." There was a sense of pride in the man's weathered eyes, which made him unable to help but straighten his chest.

"Mother!"

Shen Jiang's words were interrupted by a scream from not far away, and the man's eyes couldn't help but look at his wife on the bed.

Suddenly, his pupils contracted. His wife, who had been unconscious for two days, opened her eyes, and beads of sweat were oozing from the tip of her nose.

She groaned hoarsely, "Hungry, I'm so hungry."

Lina and Catherine rushed to the kitchen together to find something to eat. Catherine came back with a piece of brown bread, tore off a small piece and stuffed it into her mother's mouth.

Shen Jiang raised his eyebrows: "Wait a minute!"

What was Catherine to do with her patient? Feed her a piece of bread as hard as a lump of iron?

Is she okay?

Catherine stopped almost immediately when she heard the witch's words and looked at Shen Jiang in confusion.

Shen Jiang: "Don't you have some light and easily digestible food? Your mother hasn't eaten for several days. Her throat and stomach can't stand such hard food."

Catherine: "Light and easy to digest? Do you mean soft food?"

Shen Jiang gave her an admiring look. "Yes, it's best to bring some soup. The patient needs to replenish water in time after sweating. Once your mother finishes sweating, her fever will subside."

Lina initially refused to believe the witch her sister had found could actually save her mother, but when her mother called her name, tears began to flow. She knelt beside her mother's bed, unable to help but hug her and sob softly. The burning heat from her mother's body miraculously receded.

"Mom! How are you feeling?"

Shen Jiang looked at the scene of the family hugging each other and crying with joy, and a little warmth flashed through his heart.

If her grandmother could touch her head again and call her name, she might cry even louder than Lina.

After accepting Catherine's family's gratitude without any burden, Shen Jiang once again focused on the musk deer.

"I heard from Catherine that you often go in and out of the Misty Forest to hunt. I need the male mule deer you mentioned. If you can help me hunt it, I'm willing to pay extra."

Catherine's father avoided her gaze and lowered his head in shame. "Respected Witch, I am very happy to serve you. But I'm sorry, civilians are forbidden from hunting magical creatures. Only noble lords, students of magic academies, and the Knights of the Church are qualified to hunt them. I can only hunt some ordinary beasts in the Misty Forest."

Shen Jiang was a little surprised. The herbs she had taken a fancy to before were ordinary plants without any magical energy to the dragon. She naturally thought that the musk deer was just an ordinary animal here.

Unexpectedly, the musk deer here are precious magical animals, and ordinary people are not qualified to hunt them.

Shen Jiang looked at the sky from the window. The sun was only a finger's distance away from the top of the mountain. According to the previous rules, before nightfall, she would be teleported back to her own world by the golden gate.

"Listen, see this scent sac?" she said quickly, pointing to the sac between the musk deer's navel and genitals. "I don't have to hunt it. I just need to find a mule deer and squeeze what I need out of it. You just need to lead me to the mule deer. You don't have to do anything else."

The old hunter hesitated, clearly struggling. "It's almost night. Why not wait until tomorrow morning?"

The woman before him had saved his wife, and he had to take a risk to repay her kindness. This bold move would work if no one discovered it, but if someone caught him...

"It's too late. Either you draw a map of the Misty Forest for me, and I'll go in and find it myself."

Shen Jiang was anxious, trying to calm herself down and not use her kindness to demand favors from this unshaven, slightly weathered old hunter. Besides him, there was only his sick wife and two beautiful daughters left in the family, and she could probably guess what he was worried about.

"No, the Misty Forest's terrain is too complex, and it's hard to draw a clear map. If you go in for the first time without someone to guide you, it's easy to get into trouble."

Catherine didn't understand why her father was so reluctant to agree. The witch's request was not excessive. She couldn't help but say, "Let me take you to find someone else. He is also very familiar with the Misty Forest!"

"Catherine!" the old hunter shouted at her, "You forgot your promise to us that you would never see that damned orc again!"

Katherine avoided his gaze and whispered, "But the witch saved my mother. Maybe she can save Ellis's mother too."

Shen Jiang didn't hesitate, he pushed the door open and walked out. Outside the cabin, he tilted his head to Catherine, signaling her to come out and lead the way.

Catherine wiped her hands and began to take off her apron, calling her sister's attention to the potato soup simmering in the kitchen.

"If you dare to step out of this door, from now on, I will treat you as if you are no longer my daughter." The old hunter roared angrily, "I won't allow you to see him."

The only responses he received were two elongated figures.

The old hunter's cloudy eyes burst into rage. He wanted to get his eldest daughter back. Lina hugged her father and whispered, "Dad, Katherine didn't kill Mom. She saved her. Maybe we wronged her."

Catherine trotted over with ease this time. "Mister Witch, please come this way. My friend is a little special, but he's very kind and warm-hearted. Please don't worry."

Her eyes sparkled with unprecedented excitement, and even her steps became much lighter.

Shen Jiang smiled bitterly. It seemed that she was destined to return empty-handed today. She might as well go and see the condition of the other patient Catherine mentioned.

Following the path they had taken before, after passing the wild grass, and following a path lined with dense bushes on both sides, an isolated wooden house suddenly appeared before their eyes.

This place is far away from the village and even closer to the misty forest, and there is no one in sight.

"We're here. This is the home of Ellis I told you about. His mother's symptoms are much more serious than mine. If you are willing to lend a helping hand, even if you can't save his mother, I think Ellis will be happy to show you the way." She paused, then hurriedly knocked on the wooden door of Ellis's house.

The door of the wooden house was pushed open from the inside, and the people inside were obviously very happy to see the girl outside.

"Catherine, why are you here?"

When Shen Jiang saw the people in the house, a look of shock flashed across his face for a second.

It wasn't because the tall man in front of him had a pair of beautiful wet eyes, nor was it because his short, curly golden hair was very thick and gave a furry look, but because of his excitement, the bear ears on his head stood up unconsciously, and their presence was too strong to be ignored.

Is this the damn orc the old hunter was talking about? No one mentioned how handsome and cute he was.

If he were placed in my world, he would be able to attract a lot of girls with his looks alone.
