“I’m your father. Come here, sit down. Let’s have a talk, you and I…”
In the morgue of the patrol bureau, Lei Huo's cell phone rang.
He quickly walked out of the room to answer the phone, and heard the voice of the man with glasses: "Is Lie Dao dead?"
"Dead."
"Haha, good job, Lao Lei! Send me the photos, I need to report to my superiors tonight."
"Don't rush."
"What do you mean 'don't rush'? How can I not rush? It's 300,000!"
Lei Huo whispered, "I know you're anxious, but don't worry. The boss has discovered that Lie Dao has another secret. We'll let you know once we've found out, and then we'll report it up. It might be more than 300,000."
"really?"
"Go ask the boss if you dare."
"Cough... Lao Lei, I trust you. I'll wait for your good news." Glasses hung up the phone.
Lei Huo returned to the morgue.
The forensic pathologist is still performing the autopsy.
It was a bloody mess; the image had to be censored.
"How about we go out for a drink?"
Wei Shengnan spoke to Lei Huo on her own initiative.
"Want a drink?"
"Two drinks are fine too, I'll keep you company if you want to have a good time."
"You're not trying to get me drunk to trick me into telling you anything, are you?"
"You'll really get drunk? Am I stupid or are you stupid?"
"You must be stupid."
Wei Shengnan suppressed the urge to beat Lei Huo up and said, "Let's just consider this a case of getting to know each other through a fight, and since we've worked together, the forensic examination will take some time. How about we go for a few drinks?"
"Hehe, sure."
Lei Huo nodded in agreement.
The two went to a roadside food stall, ordered a table full of dishes, and a case of liquor.
They ate and chatted.
Wei Shengnan seemed to be making small talk, but in reality, she was subtly trying to find out something.
Lei Huo, of course, wouldn't fall for it. He launched into a long, boastful spittle, talking about everything from microbial evolution to interstellar exploration, from Contra to Ultraman, his spittle flying everywhere.
After eating and drinking his fill, Lei Huo was extremely satisfied. Muttering something about what he shouldn't have done, he went to the patrol bureau and continued to stay in the morgue to wait for the forensic doctor's autopsy report.
Wei Shengnan found out nothing and was furious. She stormed back to her office.
As soon as the door opened, they saw an elderly man in his fifties, dressed in a white patrol uniform, with graying black and white hair, sitting there steadily.
She immediately stood at attention and saluted: "Director Tang, why haven't you gone back to rest yet?"
"I'm just worried you'll cause some trouble."
Director Tang took a sip of goji berry tea from his thermos and asked, "Do you have any rock sugar? Could you add some for me?"
"How could I possibly cause trouble?"
Wei Shengnan took out a jar of rock sugar from the cabinet, put two pieces into the thermos in the soup pot, and looked dissatisfied.
Director Tang chuckled twice: "Little Wei, how many years have you been in Chongcheng?"
“This is the fourth year,” Wei Shengnan replied.
"Time flies... Four years have passed in the blink of an eye."
Director Tang sighed and said, "You've worked hard all these years, solving many major cases for Chongcheng. Although you're still young, you should be able to get promoted with your achievements. Do you know why we've been holding you back from being promoted?"
"I don't care about promotions or anything like that. I just want to do something practical for the people and make sure that every household can live in peace and tranquility."
"They are aware of their responsibilities."
Director Tang gave a thumbs up and then said, "After you finish this year, you can resign."
"ah?"
Wei Shengnan was taken aback and became nervous: "Why?"
"take it easy."
Director Tang smiled and said, "Take a look at your office first."
Wei Shengnan was still completely confused, but she obediently started searching everywhere.
The search uncovered twelve listening devices and nine surveillance cameras.
They come in all shapes and sizes.
"Not bad, you found them all. I put them there," Director Tang said with a smile.
Wei Shengnan was speechless.
I never thought Director Tang was so frivolous before.
The smile on Director Tang's face faded, and he said in a deep voice, "Close the doors and windows."
Wei Shengnan's heart skipped a beat for no apparent reason, and her mouth went dry.
Her intuition told her that her fate was about to change!
Wei Shengnan checked everything carefully again, even looking outside the doors and windows, before closing the door and sitting opposite Tang Ju, waiting for what was to come.
Director Tang's face was serious: "Do you know how you got the job as the head of the criminal investigation team in Chongcheng?"
"Didn't I voluntarily transfer here?" Wei Shengnan's heart pounded even harder.
"Yes, it may seem like it was decided by your subjective will, but in reality, you were making a passive choice."
Director Tang's voice turned low: "Life may seem to offer many paths and many choices, but your choices, the paths you choose, will be subconsciously influenced by external factors."
"Who can influence my decision without leaving a trace?" Wei Shengnan protested.
Her intuition is amazing; everyone in the bureau knows that.
Director Tang didn't answer, but suddenly asked, "When you were in the Qiming team, did you participate in an assessment?"
"right."
Wei Shengnan swallowed hard: "I don't know the purpose of this assessment, I don't know the result, and I don't even know how it was conducted. It just ended in a daze... But how did you find out about this, Director Tang?"
"Director Tang, can you stop keeping me in suspense? I'm starting to panic."
Beads of sweat appeared on Wei Shengnan's forehead.
She was clearly panicked.
This is the most instinctive reaction when faced with the unknown.
