Chapter 2 I Have No One to Rely On

When Jiang Ning came out of the bathroom while drying her hair, she found Yan Keyi waiting for her at the bathroom door, holding a bowl of ginger brown sugar, as if she was about to hand it to her.

"For me?"

Jiang Ning turned his head to look at Yan Keyi. Her long, loose hair enveloped her small face, making her seem more and more adorable.

"Yes, sister, you'll drink too. You got soaked in the rain too."

Although Jiang Ning had brewed the ginger and brown sugar himself, Yan Keyi serving it over was somewhat of a way of offering something in return. However, Yan Keyi knew that Jiang Ning had protected her all the way back, and that her clothes weren't very effective at protecting her from the rain, and that Jiang Ning had almost completely covered her head with them.

"Okay, let's sit down for a while."

He took the bowl from Yan Keyi's hand and then took her hand with his other hand, leading her to sit on the sofa.

Although Jiang Ning showered quite quickly, Yan Keyi stood at the bathroom door with a hot bowl, not worried about getting burned. Sure enough, when she took Jiang Ning's hand, she found it was indeed burning hot.

But she didn't say any of this.

Although I took her in today, she has no real connection to me, and I still need to ask her the questions I need to ask.

"Little sister, my name is Jiang Ning. What's your name? Why are you crying all by yourself in the alley?"

Jiang Ning turned his head and looked at Yan Keyi intently, trying to discern some emotion from her face.

But perhaps because Jiang Ning asked her what had happened, she didn't need to explain; he could tell she was really upset.

Tears welled up in her eyes again; the crimson stain from where she had cried hadn't faded yet, and tears slid down her cheeks once more.

"Don't cry, don't cry. What's wrong? If you'd like, you can tell me. If not, we can get some rest tonight."

Jiang Ning couldn't bear to see Yan Keyi cry, so he quickly put his arm around her and gently patted her back to try to comfort her.

However, it was one thing if no one comforted her, but the moment someone tried to comfort her, Yan Keyi cried even harder.

In addition, Jiang Ning's embrace was very warm, and she felt cared for, so she really couldn't control her emotions.

Yan Keyi cried for a long time before she slowly stopped. During this time, Jiang Ning patiently comforted her. Although he didn't say much, Yan Keyi knew he was there for her, and gradually her emotions calmed down.

"Sister Jiang Ning, my name is Yan Keyi."

After calming down, Yan Keyi first introduced herself to Jiang Ning.

"Okay, Yiyi is great, can I call you Yiyi?"

Having learned her name and seeing that she seemed willing to speak, Jiang Ning waited patiently for Yan Keyi to open her mouth without urging her.

“Yes, Sister Jiang Ning. Your name, Yi Yi, sounds lovely.”

Taking a deep breath, Yan Keyi seemed to be mentally preparing herself.

"I come from the countryside..."

Yan Keyi told a story that was neither too long nor too short.

Her parents worked hard in the big city, leaving her with her grandparents in the countryside, making her a "left-behind child." Her parents had considered bringing her back to live with them, but Yan Keyi refused because she was worried about leaving her grandparents behind.

Seeing that Yan Keyi was unwilling, and considering that Yan Keyi could take care of their parents back in their hometown, her parents did not insist.

He used to come home a few times during holidays, but he hasn't come back much lately, and gradually he's even stopped sending money home.

At first, it wasn't a big deal. My grandparents had saved up some money from their hard work all their lives, so they weren't going to starve.

But later, Grandma kept coughing up blood and was later diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer. Grandpa took out all the money in the family to try to treat Grandma, but in the end, he couldn't save her.

Grandpa and Grandma had always had a very good relationship. After Grandma passed away, Grandpa was devastated and his health deteriorated. During this time, Yan Keyi's parents didn't write to her much.

The old man knew he was nearing the end of his life and wanted to die so he could go down to his wife. But he was worried about Yan Keyi, so he gave her the little money he had left and her parents' contact information. He then asked someone to send Yan Keyi to the city so she could go and stay with his parents.

Not long after Yan Keyi left, the old man passed away.

But Yan Keyi didn't even know that until she found her parents, she learned from them that her grandfather had passed away not long after sending her off.

The death of a loved one should be a sad thing, but Yan Keyi could not see any sadness on their faces.

They were very resentful that the elderly couple had passed away without leaving them any inheritance, and even when she came looking for them, they looked at her as if she were a burden.

It was around that time that Yan Keyi learned that her parents had a new younger brother. Because they had focused all their attention on their brother, they had neglected their parents back home.

Yan Keyi originally thought she wouldn't bother them anymore, but her grandparents had already passed away, and she had nowhere else to go.

She thought that she would stay here until she came of age, and then she would move out once she was old enough to go out and work.

But Yan Keyi never expected that her parents would abandon her in a completely unfamiliar place under the guise of taking her out to play.

Before leaving home, Yan Keyi's mother styled her hair cutely and dressed her in a pretty new dress, only to have it thrown away...

Yan Keyi wanted to go home, but she felt that they didn't welcome her, so what was the point of her going back?

In addition, she had no idea how to get back. After she couldn't find her way, Yan Keyi seemed to be able to do nothing but cry helplessly.

After that, Jiang Ning took him in.

After hearing what Yan Keyi had to say, Jiang Ning felt very uncomfortable.

Not all parents can truly be called parents. If you really don't want to raise children, you shouldn't have them in the first place.

But after giving birth, they just ignore it and don't care about it anymore. It's really outrageous.

Jiang Ning had originally planned to send Yan Keyi back home if he could help her find her family. But now it seems that even if he did send her back, she would probably be abandoned again.

This time they just abandoned her in a secluded spot, but what about next time? What if they sell her to some remote mountain village?

If she hadn't brought Yan Keyi back today, Jiang Ning really couldn't imagine what Yan Keyi would have gone through wandering alone in a foreign land. People like her, even if they disappeared, would go unnoticed.

Although Jiang Ning was unsure of Yan Keyi's wishes, he had already made his own decision.
