Chapter 144 The Reappearance of the Gu Insects

Cen Zhi held a silver needle, while Luo Chang held a scalpel, both with serious expressions, ready for battle.

Zhang Fan gathered his spiritual energy in his palm and channeled it to Wei Lai's mouth. He closed his eyes and sensed the meridians within Wei Lai's body.

A still heart appeared before my eyes, and streams of crimson blood ceased to flow.

Zhang Fan's consciousness traveled along Wei Lai's blood vessels, finally stopping at the right abdomen, where there was a blockage.

He channeled his spiritual energy, pushing the blockage along his blood vessels until it finally stopped on his right wrist.

Zhang Fan gave the order: "Move out!"

Cen Zhi immediately inserted the silver needle into the acupoint on his wrist to block the obstructed path.

Luo Chang held the scalpel and cut into Wei Lai's wrist artery. There was no blood; Wei Lai's blood seemed to have congealed and remained still.

Before he could even be surprised, Zhang Fan intensified his spiritual power, forcing the blockage towards the wound.

The blockage seemed to have a life of its own, trying to move upwards onto the arm. However, Cen Zhi's silver needles blocked its path. It tried many times but failed, and then, seemingly in a hurry, its movements became violent.

This thing is really hard to deal with.

Zhang Fan used his other finger to press two fingers together and channeled his spiritual energy to remove the blockage.

Golden spiritual energy flowed into Wei Lai's blocked area, like a pair of giant hands grasping the blockage and moving it towards the wound.

The release of this spiritual energy must be just right. Too much energy will cause the blockage to explode, turning into a deadly poison that will kill Wei Lai on the spot. Too little energy will make it impossible to control.

After several rounds of struggle, the blockage lost its strength and completely gave up resistance, allowing Zhang Fan to remove it.

Wei Lai's wrist wound swelled up, and then a fat black head emerged, followed by a body that was a mix of emerald green and crimson red. A strangely shaped worm fell to the ground.

The cold ground made the insect very uncomfortable. It curled up into a ball, seemingly unaccustomed to the cold. After turning its head 360 degrees, it suddenly flew like an arrow towards Luochang, the nearest city to it.

Luo Chang had no time to react; he only saw a dark shadow flying towards him, and the insect's body reflected in his pupils gradually enlarged.

Suddenly, the insect stopped in mid-air, only inches away from Luochang.

He then realized that the insect was flying towards him, hovering in mid-air. He was so frightened that his face turned pale and he took a step back.

Luo Chang then realized that the insect had been pierced through the body by Zhang Fan with a silver needle, and was writhing in pain.

"Thank you very much, young friend Zhang," Luo Chang said, still feeling a lingering sense of unease.

With his other hand, Zhang Fan held the silver needles and once again used the Nine Life-Saving Needles technique, inserting them into nine major acupoints on Wei Lai's body, and changing more than ten different formations in succession.

With a swift and precise movement, the needle was inserted with lightning speed, leaving only a blur. As the last needle was inserted, a wavy line instantly lit up on the heart monitor.

The wound on his wrist wasn't bleeding, and Luo Chang stitched and bandaged it up as quickly as possible.

Cen Zhi immediately rushed forward to take her pulse, then excitedly announced, "The poison is gone!"

It seems that Wei Lai's poisoning symptoms all came from this insect.

Wei Lai is alive.

Luo Chang and Cen Zhi both breathed a sigh of relief, and then focused their attention on the insect wriggling on the silver needle.

Cen Zhi leaned closer to examine the insect from all angles, but couldn't figure out what it was. He looked at Luo Chang with a questioning gaze: "Is this a parasite?"

Luo Chang: "Wei Lai was examined before and no parasites were found. Such a large parasite could not have been found immediately, and I have never seen this kind of parasite before."

Human parasites are usually roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, etc., and infection usually occurs by consuming contaminated water or food. Moreover, the growth of parasites takes time.

During Wei Lai's hospitalization, he underwent several full-body examinations, and if he had any parasites, they would have been detected long ago.

How could such a large worm appear inside a human body?

Luo Chang felt a chill run down his spine and spread throughout his body.

Zhang Fan: "This is a Gu worm."

"Gu worms? Aren't they just from legends?"

The legend of Gu worms has a long history, and it is recorded in many classic books such as Gan Bao's "In Search of the Supernatural" from the Jin Dynasty, Xunzi's "Records of Spirits and Ghosts" from the Jin Dynasty, and Yuan Mei's "Nine Things the Master Did Not Say" from the Qing Dynasty.

Legend has it that they are carefully cultivated over many years using special methods, and can vary in size. Powerful Gu worms even have their own consciousness.

However, Luo Chang had never seen it with his own eyes and thought that the legends about Gu worms were just rumors. He never expected that they were actually true.

Cen Zhi's eyes glistened with tears: "My grandfather once said he had seen Gu worms, but I thought he was just talking nonsense because he was old. I never imagined it was true."

Luo Chang: "How did this Gu worm get into Wei Lai's body?"

Zhang Fan narrowed his eyes dangerously: "Someone poisoned us. You were at the hospital all night yesterday. Tell me what happened?"

Cen Zhi: "We were on duty separately. Nothing happened during my shift, and Wei Lai's indicators were all normal."

Luo Chang: "Nothing strange happened to me. No, I remember now, something was off compared to usual."

He was on duty during the second half of the night, and Sheng Jian'an was on duty with him.

Sheng Jian'an went out for a while and came back looking very strange and nervous. Luo Chang even asked him a couple of questions.

Sheng Jian'an seemed to be thinking about something, and Luo Chang called him several times before he came back to his senses: "Teacher, I'm fine."

If nothing happens during the night shift, people usually chat to stay awake and avoid falling asleep.

At first, the two chatted normally, but later Luo Chang praised Zhang Fan's medical skills, and Sheng Jian'an's expression changed instantly. Luo Chang knew that his student was sensitive, so he quickly changed the subject.

Luo Chang still felt a chill when he recalled Sheng Jian'an's expression. Sheng Jian'an's eyes were sinister and full of hatred, as if he were about to kill someone.
