Chi Fei: "We've arrived!"
At the village entrance, an elderly woman who looked to be around 80 years old walked shakily with a cane. Her cloudy eyes looked at Chi Fei, and then her gaze fell on Zhang Fan.
Those eyes seemed veiled in mist, and Zhang Fan guessed that the other person probably couldn't see them. Then, the old woman's aged voice came: "Zhang Fan has arrived."
Chi Fei stepped forward: "Clan leader, I am so grateful to Zhang Fan for saving me this time, otherwise I would have been dead."
The old woman said, "The old Taoist master has already said that."
Zhang Fan went straight to the point: "Who is the Old Celestial Master?"
The clan chief said, "No rush. You've come from afar, so rest first. We'll have a welcome banquet for you tonight. Holy Maiden, you can stay at your home."
With that, the clan chief, leaning on his cane, walked away unsteadily.
Chi Fei led Zhang Fan to the central building, which was three stories high and made of earthen walls and wood. The other buildings were interconnected, so they could walk all over the village without going up or down stairs.
Zhang Fan sat at the table while Chi Fei took the kettle to fetch water. Bored, Zhang Fan looked around the room.
The room was small, with a bed, a table and chairs, a wardrobe, and a storage cabinet full of bottles and jars, and nothing else.
Not long after, Chi Fei came in carrying a kettle and made Zhang Fan a pot of tea: "Have some first, there's a big meal tonight."
Zhang Fan voiced his doubts: "Shouldn't a saintess be celibate and abstinent? Why is your clan leader allowing you to bring men back to your room?"
Chi Fei covered her mouth, and a silvery laugh escaped from the corner of her lips: "You watch too many TV dramas. I am a saintess, but not that kind of saintess."
She explained that the medicinal properties of Miao herbs are unstable, and only the blood of the Holy Maiden can stabilize their effects. This blood will not disappear just because the Holy Maiden gets married and has children.
There were several holy maidens in the village before, but in Chi Fei's generation, only she was chosen.
Zhang Fan: "Who chose the saintess?"
“Chief, she takes a test every ten years, but it hasn’t happened in the last 20 years.” Chi Fei looked worried. “Our village is short of people, and the chief is worried about this.”
"How can women give birth to so many babies?" Zhang Fan thought to himself.
...
"Zhang Fan, the dinner is ready." A woman in makeup walked in and called Zhang Fan and the others to eat.
Chi Fei asked, puzzled, "Why are you wearing makeup today?"
The woman blushed: "We have important guests, so of course we have to dress up in our finest attire."
As the woman spoke, she secretly glanced at Zhang Fan. He wasn't sure if it was just his imagination, but he felt that her gaze was like that of the women from the Women's Kingdom looking at Tang Sanzang.
