Chapter 35 The Deal with the Wolf King

Zhang Fan rolled on the ground to nimbly dodge, then sprang to his feet, ran two steps, leaped onto a tree, and used the momentum to kick the shadowy figure.

"grumble--"

The dark figure was kicked and sent flying backward, tumbling several times on the ground before crashing into a tree and coming to a stop, causing the leaves to rustle.

Upon closer inspection, Zhang Fan realized it was the wolf king whose forehead fur he had plucked.

Compared to the last time I saw it, it had lost weight, its belly was sunken, its fur wasn't as shiny, and it had wounds on its body, including a cut on its right hind leg.

It struggled to its feet, swayed a couple of times to steady itself, shook its head to clear its head, found the person who had attacked it, immediately lowered its head, arched its back, bared its teeth, and assumed a posture ready to attack at any moment.

Zhang Fan was in a hurry to find the other parts of the "Wuji Jing" and had no time to get entangled with the Wolf King, so he decided to finish the battle quickly.

He concentrated his spiritual power in his legs, ready to deliver a fatal blow to the wolf king at any moment.

The moment the spiritual energy circulated, the wolf king's reddened eyes suddenly returned to normal.

The tense atmosphere vanished. Seeing that the other party was no longer attacking, Zhang Fan withdrew his spiritual power and left on his own.

Zhang Fan walked toward the cave where he had fallen in last time. The wolf king followed slowly behind him with a limp, showing no intention of attacking. Zhang Fan ignored it and let the wolf king follow.

Upon reaching the cave entrance, Zhang Fan jumped directly inside, using his feet to hook onto the cave wall as he fell to slow his speed.

Upon landing, it deftly rolled a few times on the spot before landing safely.

The wolf king snorted irritably from above. Zhang Fan looked up and saw the wolf king poking its head out of the cave entrance, looking extremely agitated.

Zhang Fan withdrew his gaze and carefully observed the terrain.

Last time he went to the left, where there were only shallows formed by undercurrents and no other way to go.

Zhang Fan walked to the right, and after turning a corner, a small cave about one meter high suddenly appeared. A pile of rocks blocked the way, and there were traces of artificial excavation in the cave.

He walked to the cave entrance, bent down and looked inside, only to discover that it was a completely different world inside.

A narrow passageway, just wide enough for one person to pass through, was about twenty meters long, with oil lamps standing on both sides.

In the passageway lay five skeletons, some with arrows stuck in their chests, and others with hidden weapons in their chests.

Beside the bones, gold and jewels were scattered on the ground, along with a few jade beads.

Zhang Fan's eyes lit up. Could the "Wuji Jing" be inside?

Judging from the appearance, this cave was dug by tomb raiders. They dug a passage to get the jewelry, but they fell into the trap of the tomb chamber and were unable to escape.

The jade bead that had previously been incorporated into his body was taken to the entrance of the cave by tomb raiders and then washed by the underground river to the spot where Zhang Fan had fainted last time.

Zhang Fan picked up a small stone and threw it inside. It rolled around once, and after confirming that nothing had happened, Zhang Fan crawled into the tomb raider's passage.

The passageway was very narrow. After Zhang Fan went in, he found that his shoulders were too wide and he would get stuck. He would be stuck in the middle with no way to call for help, so he had to find another way.

Zhang Fan landed on the ground where he had fallen, lightly touched the ground with his toes, climbed up the mountain wall, and climbed out.

The wolf king waited at the cave entrance, while Zhang Fan kept a safe distance.

In case the wolf king attacks while he's not paying attention, he must be fully prepared.

The wolf king seemed to know Zhang Fan's plan and retreated from behind.

Zhang Fan listened carefully and heard the wolf king's voice receding into the distance.

However, wolves are cunning and treacherous by nature, so this might just be a smokescreen.

He crawled out of the cave, fully alert, wary of the wolf king's attack.

Unexpectedly, the wolf king was really far away from him. The moment it saw him come out, its ears perked up, and it looked very happy.

Zhang Fan looked around but couldn't find a suitable tool.

The jade beads are about fifteen meters away from the cave entrance. Tree branches of this length are usually very thick and can only be tied together with a few thin branches.

He broke off a few branches about the thickness of a thumb, tied them together with grass, and tried to do it, but found it difficult to handle and had very little flexibility.

What if we accidentally push the jade bead further away? Wouldn't that be a loss?

Zhang Fan discarded the branch and sought another method.

Just then, Zhang Fan's gaze fell on the wolf king, who stood on its hind legs, staring intently at Zhang Fan.

Moreover, the wolf king is small and agile, making it well-suited for walking in tunnels.

Others had tried to train hunting dogs before, but the wolf king was already an adult and could not be trained. Most importantly, Zhang Fan did not have enough time to wait for the training to be successful.

He slowly sat down on the ground, propping his head up as he pondered. The wolf king seemed impatient, snorting urgently.

The wolf king noticed the wolf king's unusual behavior, raised his head, and tentatively asked, "Did you need something from me?"

Unexpectedly, the wolf king slowly nodded.

Zhang Fan was taken aback for a moment, then asked, "What do you want me to do?"

The wolf king tilted its head to the side, signaling Zhang Fan to follow.

Zhang Fan thought that sitting and thinking about the jade beads wouldn't solve anything, so he decided to follow them and see if it would spark his thinking and help him come up with a solution. So he followed them.

After passing through the reeds that were two people tall, the bottom of the reeds had long since dried up, with only the tips still bearing fresh leaves. Many locusts were perched on them, gnawing at the leaves. The swamp below had dried up completely, and the soil had hardened.

After crossing another hill, they arrived at a hidden cave. Outside the cave, there were jagged rocks and overgrown weeds, which did not meet the living environment that wolves prefer. It looked more like a temporary dwelling.

The wolf king gave a soft howl, and two female wolves and a cub emerged, all bearing wounds of various sizes, with one of their paws still dragging a trap, dripping with blood.

Zhang Fan was surprised. The wolf king walked over, poked the wolf cub's neck with its nose, and nudged it towards Zhang Fan.

The wolf cub slowly walked over, but when it saw Zhang Fan, it stopped in fear and looked back at its mother wolf, who turned her face away.

Seeing this, Zhang Fan understood everything. Someone had hunted the wolves without permission, and the pack had been almost completely wiped out. They wanted to entrust the wolf cubs to him.

Zhang Fan had never owned a pet before and refused outright: "You should find someone else."

The wolf king grew anxious. He realized that Zhang Fan was exceptionally capable and emanated spiritual energy. The fact that Zhang Fan hadn't taken advantage of its injury to kill it indicated that he was someone worthy of trust.

It rushed over, blocked the road, and lay down on the ground, exposing its soft belly.

Zhang Fan knew that the belly was the wolf's weakest point, and exposing its belly meant that it was showing weakness and trying to please him.

For the wolf king, the leader of the pack, showing weakness to Zhang Fan was extremely difficult.

Thinking of the jade bead, Zhang Fan quickly said, "If you can do me a favor, I can adopt it."

Upon hearing this, the wolf king nodded, and the man and the wolf reached a deal.
