Chapter 4 Cultivating Skills While Running

Zhang Si walked into the steep southern slope, and after walking more than ten meters, he realized something was wrong. He turned around and looked behind him. The others were standing at the boundary, not daring to go forward.

He turned around and snapped, "What are you dawdling about?"

Zhang Qingshan's eyes were filled with terror: "Fourth...Fourth Brother, this steep southern slope is teeming with wild beasts. We've even heard wolves howling these past few days. It's terrifying!"

With a dark expression, Zhang Si kicked a small stone with all his might. The stone flew straight towards Zhang Qingshan's face.

Zhang Qingshan couldn't dodge in time and was hit squarely in the face, leaving a gaping hole in his head from which blood flowed.

He clutched his wound, but dared not show his anger, bowing and scraping as he said, "Fourth Brother, I was wrong."

Zhang Si gritted his teeth and said, "I'm going to beat that idiot to death today! He was fine here last night, it's perfectly safe here."

He turned around and saw Zhang Fan wiggling his butt at him again, and his anger flared up instantly.

A group of people, trembling, reluctantly followed.

"I have a feeling that the idiot is really weird, like he deliberately lured us here."

"Don't scare me, I'm getting goosebumps."

These words reached Zhang Si's ears on the wind, and his brow twitched suddenly, a strange feeling rising within him.

He remembered punching a hole in Zhang Fan's head last night, but now it looks so clean.

Could it be that I've misread it?

Yes, I must have misread it.

He drank alcohol yesterday, so it's normal for him to misremember.

As dusk approached, it was already afternoon, and the scorching sun baked the earth.

Perhaps due to the "Wuji Jing" (a Buddhist scripture), Zhang Fan ran another ten miles without showing any signs of fatigue.

Zhang Si and the others, exhausted and hungry, dragged their heavy steps and walked slowly.

We can't let people get exhausted right now. Zhang Fan stood on high ground and looked into the distance. With his superior eyesight, he saw a stream not far away.

He ran towards the stream, with Zhang Si close behind.

As they drew nearer, the babbling brook instantly roused the weary Zhang Si and his companions, and they ran toward the stream.

The crystal-clear stream flows gently, and schools of small fish frolic and play in it.

Zhang Si knelt by the stream, cupped his hands in his hands, gulped down the water, and exclaimed with delight, "So sweet!"

Zhang Qingshan buried his face in the stream to dispel the summer heat.

Just as the group was drinking heartily, Zhang Fan exclaimed, "So refreshing!"

"The water in the mountains is wonderful; it has a unique flavor."

Everyone's attention was drawn to Zhang Fan, who stood on a high place, took off his pants, and raised his lower body, which fell in an arc and merged into the stream.

They just... drank urine!

Zhang Si's expression changed drastically, and he felt nauseous.

The others weren't feeling well either; no wonder the stream water tasted strange earlier—it was urine!

Zhang Si suddenly stood up and chased after Zhang Fan, yelling, "I'll beat you to death today!"

...

Time passed slowly, the sun set, and dusk fell.

With their vision blurring, fear surged through everyone's hearts once more.

"Fourth Brother, what...what should we do?"

A moment of silence fell over the air as everyone stared at Zhang Si.

Zhang Si chased Zhang Fan for a whole day, but couldn't even touch the hem of his clothes; he was constantly held hostage by anger.

As night fell, his mind cleared considerably.

There have long been legends of wild beasts eating people on the steep southern slope, who venture deep into the dense forest, not knowing where the exit is.

Having not eaten all day, and feeling both exhausted and hungry, neither continuing to chase Zhang Fan nor searching for a way out was a wise move.

There were more than a dozen of them, and even if they encountered wild beasts, they would have a chance of winning.

He waved his hand and said, "Everyone, rest first, we'll talk again when it's light."

The group sat down on the ground, gathered some dry firewood, and started a fire.

Zhang Fan hid in a tree, using the cover of night to secretly observe Zhang Si and the others.

When people have free time, they tend to chat out of boredom, and the conversation inevitably turns to the reason why Zhang Si is so angry.

Zhang Qingshan tried to get closer to Zhang Si and boldly asked him why.

To everyone's surprise, Zhang Si's expression changed drastically upon hearing this, and he slapped Zhang Si hard, yelling, "What's it to you!"

Zhang Qingshan's mind went blank, his face quickly swelled up like a pig's head, and there was a foreign object in his mouth. When he spat it out, he found it was a tooth.

Now, no one dared to provoke them.

Everyone fell silent instantly, not daring to utter a single word, while the rumbling of their stomachs was exceptionally clear.

Zhang Fan leaped from one tree to another with incredible agility, moving as fast as a ghost.

During the day, he ran around observing the terrain and accidentally discovered a medicinal herb—croton.

The Wuji Jing records the names, characteristics, medicinal properties, and simple prescriptions of some commonly used medicinal materials.

Croton seeds can be used to treat diseases when taken in small amounts, but they are highly toxic when taken in large amounts, and can even be fatal in severe cases.

A gust of wind blew by, and Zhang Fan threw all the croton seeds down, which fell like dense raindrops.

He used considerable force, and when he hit someone, screams of agony filled the air.

By the dim light of the fire, they saw that what had hit them was fruit. Ignoring the pain, they stuffed it into their mouths without thinking.

It's a bit spicy, but compared to being hungry, the spiciness is nothing.

Zhang Si was so hungry that his stomach was practically sticking to his back. He didn't find many fruits, but he ate a lot of them, snatching quite a few from others.

Less than ten minutes later, someone clutched their stomach and said, "My stomach hurts so much."

"Me too, I need to poop."

"I can't take it anymore."

Their stomachs were already empty, and now they'd even emptied their watery bowels. Zhang Si and the others felt weak and powerless; some couldn't bear it any longer and simply lay down on the ground, praying for dawn to arrive quickly.

But fate had other plans; a low, fierce wolf howl pierced the valley.
