Chapter 8: Owes a Huge Debt

Zhang Fan ran home at top speed and saw from a distance that half of the mud wall had been smashed down.

A group of onlookers stood nearby, watching Zeng Guihua smash things in the yard and Li Chunyan trembling with fear in a corner.

"You slut, if you hadn't let Zhang Fan run away, my man wouldn't have been targeted by the wolves!"

Zeng Guihua cursed and threw a stone at the pickle jar in the yard.

The pickling jar was broken into pieces, and the pickled cabbage inside spilled all over the ground.

Zhang Fan clenched his fists so tightly they cracked; this was kimchi his sister-in-law had been making for three years.

The longer the brine is soaked, the more fragrant the pickled vegetables become. In addition, there are two pickled radishes brought by her sisters-in-law from their parents' home. They have been soaking for ten years and have become a medicine that can treat colds and flu. Li Chunyan usually treasures them very much.

Zhang Fan quickened his pace and ran to the outside of the yard as fast as he could.

Fortunately, everyone's attention was focused on the courtyard, and no one noticed Zhang Fan's unusual speed.

"Let go of my sister-in-law!" Zhang Fan pushed through the crowd and slapped Zeng Guihua.

Zeng Guihua was so badly beaten that she saw stars, staggered, spun around twice, and fell to the ground.

"Zhang the Fool, how could you come back?" The moment Li Chunyan saw Zhang Fan, she was first overjoyed, but then fear replaced her.

She was overjoyed that Zhang Fan had returned safely, seemingly unharmed. Everyone said that Zhang Fan must have been eaten by wolves, which was why he hadn't come back, which frightened her so much that she fainted.

What I fear is that Zhang Fan beat Zeng Guihua, which would only make things worse.

Li Chunyan quickly realized what was happening and was about to kneel down before Zeng Guihua: "He's an idiot, don't mind him, I'm kneeling down for you."

Zhang Fan pulled Li Chunyan along and said in a silly tone, "Sister-in-law, we did nothing wrong, why do we have to kneel?"

He couldn't reveal himself yet, so he could better see the monsters and scoundrels around him.

Zeng Guihua glared at Zhang Fan: "Even if you kneel down, I will never forgive you."

Li Chunyan was so frightened that she lost her composure and cried out in panic, "Kneel, I'll kneel!"

Zhang Fan's hands, like iron clamps, gripped Li Chunyan tightly, preventing her from kneeling down.

The plump aunt whispered to her, "Let go quickly, or even a god couldn't save you."

"Calm down, everyone. We share the same surname and are all family. Let's talk this out." An elderly man with gray hair, hunched over, leaning on a cane, walked with difficulty and was weak. He had to rest for a while after saying just one sentence.

The onlookers wore respectful expressions.

Zhang Fan's third uncle, Zhang Youde, was the former village chief of Zhangjiapo. He was fair and just in dealing with matters, and Zhangjiapo was always harmonious under his rule.

Later, he fell ill, and his only grandson went missing, so he had to step down.

Zhang Si became the village chief through his connections, and from then on, he acted with impunity in the village.

Zhang Youde was highly respected in the village and was the most senior person in Zhangjiapo. Whenever he spoke, people would give him face, no matter what.

Zeng Guihua glared at Zhang Fan with eyes full of hatred, but her voice softened slightly: "My husband was harmed like that, he must compensate me now."

Li Chunyan: "I said I would compensate you, and I definitely will."

Zhang Fan: "Zhang Si hit me and wants me to pay compensation? Third Master, I won't do it!"

Zeng Guihua took out an IOU: "This IOU was written by Li Chunyan, it's in black and white."

Li Chunyan panicked: "You just promised me that you would pay me 100,000 yuan within three years to let me vent my anger, and then you would let Zhang Fan go."

Zeng Guihua snorted coldly: "Who can testify?"

Li Chunyan pointed at the group: "You were all here just now."

Those people were brought by Zeng Guihua, and they quickly denied it; "No, don't talk nonsense."

Li Chunyan's face was deathly pale, and she looked at Zhang Youde with pleading eyes: "Old village chief, you have to believe me."

Zhang Youde sighed: "Zhang Fan is an idiot, what does he know? You know his family has always been poor. I think I'll give you a few days' grace."

Just as Zeng Guihua was about to speak, Zhang Fan suddenly stuck out his neck and said, "Third Master, I heard that it's not illegal for an idiot to kill someone, is that true?"

He glanced at her seemingly unintentionally, his eyes clearly blank, yet Zeng Guihua sensed a murderous intent, and a chill ran down her spine.

Zhang Youde nodded: "That's true, but you can't kill anyone. We're all family."

Zhang Fan nodded obediently: "I understand, Third Uncle."

Zhang Youde had always treated Zhang Fan well. Even when Zhang Fan became mentally impaired, he still visited him several times despite his own illness.

However, he was getting old and sick, and going out once would almost cost him his life. Later, Zhang Youde's health deteriorated, and he had no energy to take care of Zhang Fan. This time, going out again could cost him his life.

Li Chunyan pulled Zhang Fan aside and said ingratiatingly, "Zeng Guihua, don't worry, I will definitely give you the money. Please let Zhang Fan go."

Zhang Fan pulled Li Chunyan close and said, "Sister-in-law, don't be afraid. I dreamt of a deity. He said he's watching over me from heaven and will always protect me."

No sooner had he finished speaking than gasps of surprise came from below.

Everyone looked down and saw seven wolves running in a line towards the village.

Those who hadn't gone up the mountain were terrified and scattered in all directions. The group of people didn't even look at them and ran straight towards the tallest cement house in the village.

A moment later, two people ran out of the house, screaming in agony, "The wolf killed someone!"

Zeng Guihua's face changed drastically, and she cried out, "My Fourth, hurry and save them!"

The people she brought up were so frightened they froze on the spot before they could even react.

"If you don't leave, I'll tell my brother." Hearing this, the group finally realized what was happening, grabbed their tools, and ran down the mountain, their faces pale.

They hadn't walked far when they saw the wolf pack come out again, covered in blood. They stopped immediately, watching the wolves warily, afraid that they would rush up and bite them.

Fortunately, the wolves ran towards the edge of the village and did not harm anyone along the way.

Everyone who witnessed this scene was terrified, their legs going weak with fear.

"How could wolves get into the village? Could there really be a deity?" someone asked in a low voice.

"It's probably true, otherwise why would the wolf only bite Zhang Si?"

"Zhang Fan, I gave you eggs before, remember to tell the old immortal."

"Zhang Fan, I scolded you before, but that's just how your aunt is, don't take it to heart."

Everyone's gaze towards Zhang Fan changed.

They became extremely respectful, afraid of accidentally offending someone.

"Zhang Si, you died a terrible death." The mournful voice carried on the wind, echoing in the empty valley, sounding particularly desolate.

Startled by the cold wind, Zhang Youde coughed violently, his face turning bright red. He couldn't catch his breath and staggered downwards.

Zhang Fan caught the man with lightning speed: "Third Master, be careful."

He casually placed his hand on Zhang Youde's wrist. Fortunately, Zhang Youde was not seriously injured; he had only caught a slight cold and could be relieved with some medicine.

Zhang Fan placed his other palm on Zhang Youde's back and pressed two acupoints, which quickly relieved Zhang Youde's cough.

Zhang Youde looked at him intently, causing Zhang Fan to break out in a cold sweat.

Could it be that Third Master has discovered something?
