Chapter 71 The Witch's Conspiracy

The sorceress Li performed a strange dance for a while, brandishing a peach wood sword and spitting out wine from her mouth. The misty wine transformed into a fire dragon, igniting a yellow talisman in front of her.

After the talisman burned out, it did not turn into ashes, but instead revealed a small red figure, which terrified the viewer.

Li the fortune teller said, "The mountain god is merciful. The villagers of Zhangjiapo are willing to offer their treasures. You must protect everyone and help them get through the drought!"

The little red figure jumped up suddenly, and almost all the villagers now had complete faith in Li the fortune teller's abilities.

He then pointed to a basket in front of her.

"Put everyone's belongings here."

Zhang Youde called Zhang Fan over and watched from the side.

The villagers were scrambling to put the money they had brought into their baskets.

After everyone had finished releasing the food, Granny Li covered the basket with a red cloth.

"Now, everyone close your eyes and pray sincerely. If the mountain god forgives you, the drought will pass."

The villagers obediently closed their eyes, their expressions devout, and no one doubted the authenticity of Li the fortune teller.

Anyway, the basket for holding the money was so big that Granny Li didn't have time to move it away.

Just as everyone was praying, a dark figure quietly appeared next to the basket.

The shadowy figure easily lifted the basket containing the money, then replaced it with another basket and placed it in the same spot.

They moved very lightly, making almost no sound.

The basket was to the side and behind the crowd. It was completely dark and visibility was poor. Everyone's attention was on the sorceress, and no one noticed her at all.

Apart from Zhang Fan, none of these subtle movements escaped his ears.

He opened his eyes and saw the dark figure had already picked up the basket and placed it on the motorcycle parked on the side road.

Zhang Fan shouted, "Someone's stealing money!"

"Boom—"

The motorcycle starts its engine, twists the throttle, and speeds off like an arrow.

The motorcycle started its engine and drove off without its lights on, making it difficult to spot at night.

Only two households in the village own motorcycles, and they are parked quite far apart, so even if you get on one, you can't catch up.

Everyone could only watch helplessly as their money was stolen.

But Zhang Fan's eyesight was as sharp as day at night, and he could see the motorcycle's direction clearly.

Zhang Fan ran with all his might, chasing after the motorcycle.

The dark figure rode the motorcycle, humming a cheerful tune, in a relaxed mood.

Suddenly, the motorcycle turned around and crashed violently towards the mountainside.

"Sizzle—"

The car body scraped against the mountain wall, creating a trail of sparks that were particularly dazzling in the darkness.

The man was thrown to the ground, rolled several times, and then passed out.

The motorcycle crashed into the mountainside with a loud bang and burst into flames.

Zhang Fan stood at a distance, quietly watching this scene. He had just lightly kicked the moving motorcycle.

The man was wearing a helmet; if he received timely medical treatment, he could survive.

Zhang Fan returned the way he came, and soon encountered villagers who came to pursue him. He hid in the shadows and took the opportunity to blend into the crowd.

"There."

The villagers, carrying torches, saw a man lying on the ground, with a lot of blood and motorcycle debris scattered everywhere.

The basket that held the money was overturned to the side, and the money was scattered all over the ground.

Some people picked up the money and took it back, while others went to call Dr. Niu to come and treat the patient.

The people who picked up the money were Li Ting and Wang Wu. They used to work for Zhang Si, but after Zhang Si died, they didn't dare to extort protection money anymore, and they lost a lot of income.

With a chance to make a fortune right in front of them, they couldn't wait to take advantage of the opportunity.

The two exchanged a glance, instantly understanding each other's thoughts, and watched Zhang Fan picking up the money with tacit understanding.

Li Ting blocked Zhang Tiegen's view, and Wang Wu secretly put a bill in Zhang Tiegen's pocket.

That way, even if some money is missing, everyone will only suspect Zhang Fan of stealing it; after all, no fool will say anything.

Zhang Tiegen shouted, "Why did you put your money in Zhang Fan's pocket?"

The two men trembled in fear and threatened Zhang Tiegen: "Shut up, or I'll beat you to death!"

Zhang Fan rushed over and pushed the person aside, saying, "I'm strong, I'll take it."

With so many eyes watching them, and others doing the hard labor while they rushed to do the work, it was too obvious. Li Ting and Wang Wu could only watch helplessly as Zhang Fan carried the money away.

As luck would have it, Dr. Niu happened to be nearby and, upon hearing the commotion, rushed over immediately.

Dr. Niu was wearing a drab white coat. When he saw the person on the ground, his legs went weak and he knelt down, crawling over on his hands and feet.

"Li Xi! Li Xi!"

Dr. Niu's clothes were stained with blood, but he didn't care. He just bent down and performed artificial respiration on Li Xi.

"Li Xi, wake up! If you die, how will your uncle explain it to your mother!"

After his emergency treatment, Li Xi's condition stabilized temporarily, and the ambulance took him away, with Dr. Niu getting on the vehicle as well.

Zhang Fan carried a basket and returned to the village with the villagers who had come to chase after Li Xi.

In the village, Granny Li was arguing with the remaining people.

"My ritual is finished. It's none of my business that the money was stolen. I'll just give up your rice and let me go!"

“If you don’t let go, I will perform a ritual to ensure that your Zhangjiapo will live in drought forever.”

Suddenly, Granny Li saw the familiar basket, and horror crept into her eyes: "How...how did I get back here?"

Zhang Tiegen was filled with hatred, yet also with the satisfaction of avenging a great grudge: "The thief who stole the money was unlucky; he crashed into a cliff and was covered in blood."

"Xi'er, my son!" Granny Li's voice was distorted, her face was deathly pale, and she almost fainted.

That's when everyone realized: "Oh, so the kid who stole the money is your son, you guys are liars!"
