Chapter 23 Rogue

Suddenly, the surroundings became noisy, shattering the tranquility of the night. Guards carrying torches and chasing assassins filled the General's mansion.

Suddenly, a person fell down from the roof.

That's right, he was hanging upside down, with his arms folded over his chest, dressed in black, his face covered, only revealing a pair of cold eyes.

"Your Highness, someone is here." His voice was icy cold.

Qingying then realized that someone had been keeping watch nearby while she and Wei Huaixu were having their "secret rendezvous".

"You should leave quickly!" Qingying urged him to go.

Wei Huaixu didn't have time to say anything more before turning around and running away.

"Miss, have you rested?" came the maid's voice from outside.

Qingying didn't even have time to close the window latch before climbing onto the bed with the unfinished plum yogurt in her arms.

She had just gotten into bed when someone lifted the curtain and peeked in.

Wei Huaixu squatted down by the bed and whispered, "We can't escape. There are people all around us."

Hearing that the person outside had already pushed open the door, she didn't care about anything else. She reached out and pulled Wei Huaixu onto the bed, covering him with the blanket.

"Miss, Miss?" The maid's voice drew closer.

Qingying rubbed her eyes, ruffled her hair to make herself look like she had just woken up, then lifted a corner of the curtain, peeked out, and lazily asked, "What's wrong? What happened?"

The maid, carrying a lantern, curtsied upon seeing her appearance and replied, "An assassin has entered the manor. The old lady sent me here to check on your safety."

She waved her hand and said, "Go back and tell Grandmother that I'm fine."

"Yes, this servant will take her leave."

The maidservant then took the lantern and left.

Qingying listened intently to the sounds outside, then took the opportunity to get out of bed, close the window, and bolt it before climbing back into bed.

Wei Huaixu was about to get up when Qingying, who had returned, pressed him back under the covers.

"My brother will probably be here soon, so stay hidden and don't make a sound or cause any disturbance," she warned softly as she untied the sash of her dress.

Wei Huaixu, who was already blushing from being under the covers, turned even redder upon seeing her actions. He looked away, not daring to look at her. "What...what are you doing?"

He stammered.

Qingying hung her outer robe, which she had taken off, by the bedpost, and continued to unbutton the front of her robe, saying, "When you lie, you have to make it look convincing. I never sleep fully clothed in my own bedroom."

She stripped off her clothes until she was only wearing her undergarments and an outer garment before shrinking under the covers.

She still had some sense of propriety and didn't dare to actually wear only her undergarments.

Her blanket wasn't big; although it was usually enough for one person, it felt much more crowded now that a big man had squeezed in, and the two of them were almost pressed together.

This was the first time Wei Huaixu had been so close to a woman. The sweet fragrance of orchids emanating from her filled his nostrils, mixed with an indescribable and alluring aroma.

He didn't know what it was, but he felt a surging excitement in his heart, wanting to succumb to it, yet also feeling tormented.

Qingying wasn't much better off. Even through layers of clothing, she could feel the man's burning heat. His unique, cool aura enveloped her, making her cheeks flush.

"Ah Xu, you're too close to me," she said in a voice barely above a whisper.

Wei Huaixu, like a startled bird, quickly shrank back.

Qingying sensed that he was already exposed, so she pulled the blanket closer to him, but in doing so, she also had to move closer to him. This was clearly futile, only forcing them both to the inside of the bed.

"Alright, I'll move over a bit, you can come closer too."

"Mmm," he replied, his voice muffled and breathy.

Qingying moved away and pulled the blanket over herself. Wei Huaixu followed the blanket and leaned towards her, but he pulled too hard and his chest bumped into her back, their skin touching.

Almost simultaneously, they all held their breath.

I'm sorry.

Wei Huaixu's breathing became heavier. He suddenly felt unbearably thirsty, swallowed hard, and used his arms to prop himself up and move a little to the side.

Just as the two were getting anxious, a knock on the door made them instantly alert.

The ambiguous and romantic atmosphere of just moments ago vanished in an instant, and everything returned to clarity.

Liu Chengfeng's voice came from outside the door: "Shushu, are you in there?"

Qingying immediately replied, "I have already rested. What brings you here, elder brother?"

“An assassin has broken into our manor. I’ve come to check if you are safe and sound.”

"Everything is fine, brother, don't worry."

As soon as she finished speaking, Liu Chengfeng pushed open the door and entered.

She was so frightened that her back stiffened, and she forgot to breathe. "Big brother...brother, why are you barging into my private room..."

"A servant just said that the assassin is heading this way. I need to confirm your safety with my own eyes."

Qingying steadied herself, propped herself up on her elbows, lifted the curtain and peeked out, looking at Liu Chengfeng standing not far away. She said, "Brother has confirmed it. I have already retired for the night. Apart from the maid sent by my grandmother, I have not seen anyone else before this."

Liu Chengfeng's eagle-like eyes swept around, and only after confirming that she was alright did he lock his gaze onto her face. He suddenly paused, startled: "Shushu, are you... really alright? Why is your face so red?"

Qingying could clearly feel her cheeks burning, and with no other rebuttal, she could only lie, "I just had a nightmare, and my face turned red with fright."

"Yeah?"

She blinked, feigning innocence: "Brother, do you not believe Shushu?"

"No, no." Liu Chengfeng quickly looked away, lowered his eyes to the ground, and said, "It's good that you're alright. I'll leave a few guards outside. If you need anything, just tell them."

"Okay, brother, hurry and catch the assassin. I'll call for help if anything happens."

"Okay, you should get some rest. I'll take care of everything."

After giving his instructions, Liu Chengfeng left.

As the door closed, Qingying finally felt relieved.

But the thought of being surrounded by guards immediately caused him great distress.

"An assassin has broken into the manor. They will definitely strengthen their guard tonight. How do you plan to escape?"

Wei Huaixu lay down, staring at the canopy above, and said helplessly, "The only way is to wait until the guards are less vigilant before we leave."

"But what if they never let their guard down?"

"We'll wait until dawn, or until they change shifts midway through the day."

Qingying sat up in surprise, and said in disbelief, "You're going to sleep in the same bed with me all night?"

"Jiaojiao doesn't want to?" He smiled playfully, his eyes crinkling.

"This isn't a matter of willingness; it concerns my innocence. Even if you are the Crown Prince, you cannot act so...frivolously!"

"Alright, I was just kidding." Wei Huaixu sat up and said, "I still have one of my men outside. He'll be here to meet me in a little while."

Qingying finally breathed a sigh of relief.

But seeing that he was sitting on the bed and showed no sign of moving, she couldn't help but frown: "Are you still going to share a blanket with me?"

He covered himself with the thin blanket, his expression somewhat strange. "I... in a little while..."

Qingying was puzzled: "Why wait a while? No one will come in now. With your excellent lightness skill, you can hide on the roof beam. Apart from my brother, no one else will notice you."

"No, that's not appropriate..."

"What's wrong with it?"

His face turned red, and he couldn't say anything coherent for a long time.

Qingying, an innocent young girl, had no idea of his predicament. She couldn't explain it to him, and she was too embarrassed to speak up.

He simply didn't explain and lay down again.

Qingying was stunned. "So you're such a scoundrel! I've truly never seen anything like it!"

Wei Huaixu glanced at her with annoyance and lowered his voice, "Are you trying to lure everyone in here so you can catch them in the act?"

The obscene phrase "caught in the act" made her eyes widen in disbelief, but she still retained her rationality and didn't actually scream out loud.

She could only sit on the edge of the bed, glaring angrily at the boy who had taken over her bed.
