Chapter 121 Accompanying You
On Monday, before Lin Zaoyi even got close to her workstation, she noticed a pile of desserts and snacks on her desk.
Her gaze swept over everyone, and they all smiled at her with unusual warmth. Even the colleague who had previously been quite critical of her was now behaving exceptionally well.
It turns out that once you have money and power, you're surrounded by good people.
Oh.
"Good morning, there's a nice Japanese restaurant nearby, wanna have lunch together?" a colleague offered a friendly invitation.
"yes."
Several other colleagues chimed in, "You've been in our department for over a month now, haven't you? We haven't had a get-together yet."
Lin Zaoyi declined, found a bag, and packed all the snacks and desserts on the table into it. "I appreciate your kindness, but I'm on a diet and can't eat them all. I'll put them in the snack cabinet later, and you can take them if you need them."
He was smiling when he spoke.
"Oh, I bought this for you," the former colleague who used to dislike her said with a smile. "You're already so thin, why are you still trying to lose weight?"
"I really don't want it, thank you."
The decisive and efficient action stopped the colleagues who wanted to curry favor, and they exchanged a glance and sat down at their own workstations, feeling resentful.
Fu Sipei remained silent throughout, her head bowed low. Even though her colleagues didn't say anything, they could sense the disdain in their eyes every time they looked over.
She felt a mix of hatred, shame, and resentment, but what could she do? She had no choice but to swallow her anger.
She waited, she refused to believe that anyone could have a smooth life forever!
******
A day passed in the blink of an eye. Lin Zaoyi didn't work overtime today. When it was time, she slung her handbag over her shoulder.
During rush hour, it usually takes three or four trips to squeeze into an elevator. But because she was the daughter of General Manager Ming, she was not only in one group, but her colleagues in other groups were also extra friendly to her, making room for her to go first.
Lin Zaoyi was really afraid of dealing with this kind of insincere small talk, so she made up an excuse, "No need, I'm taking the stairs, I'm on a diet."
It's only 12 floors, not tiring at all.
"Hey, no way, just take the elevator. Are you free tonight? Let's grab a drink."
"I can't go, my mom is calling me home for dinner."
After saying that, Lin Zaoyi walked towards the stairwell without looking back.
At this moment, in the basement parking lot, a low-key black car was parked next to the pink electric car. The man in the back seat rolled down the window, holding a document and looking down at it, but his peripheral vision was filled with pink.
Occasionally, Tan Zhaojing would glance towards the elevator entrance, but amidst the bustling crowd, he couldn't spot that person.
About two minutes later, the slow-moving little figure finally came into view.
Inside the car, the driver reminded his boss, who was looking at documents, "Mr. Tan, Miss Lin is here."
As he said this, Tan Zhaojing had already gotten out of the car. He took a few steps closer and asked, "Why are you panting like that? Did you take the stairs?"
Lin Zaoyi raised her voice, "What are you doing here?"
The man said, "Let's go home together."
The words "Why are you going home?" were barely out of her mouth when she realized it was inappropriate and awkwardly changed them to, "No need, I'll go home by myself."
The wording was slightly modified: "Why are you going back to your home?"
Such awkward words must be said to be from whose mouth.
Tan Zhaojing smiled faintly, "I'd like to have dinner with you."
Lin Zaoyi: "...I ate it just last night."
He seemed to be deliberately trying to make his reasons sound plausible: "You know it was last night. We haven't eaten yet today, and the barbecue we had last night wasn't a proper dinner."
There's a reason for everything they say.
Whatever, it's his home, he can reply however he wants.
"I drive myself."
Tan Zhaojing seems to have no choice but to compromise.
In winter, dusk had already fallen before six o'clock, and it was completely dark when the two arrived at Xiyuan.
Just a minute later, another car drove in. Lin Zaoyi turned her head and saw that it was Uncle Tan's car.
The passenger door opened, and Mom stepped out.
Actually, there was enough space between her and Tan Zhaojing for two people to stand, but because she felt guilty, she widened the distance even more.
Tan Zhaojing tilted his head slightly, "Why are you hiding?"
Lin Zaoyi denied it, saying, "No."
Tan Zhaojing was too lazy to argue, and he couldn't win anyway. He turned his gaze to the elder walking over and said, "Dad, Aunt Ming."
Tan's father was slightly surprised, "Why are you back today?"
Tan Zhaojing glanced at Aunt Ming subconsciously, and Aunt Ming happened to look over as well. Regardless of whether they made eye contact, Tan Zhaojing could guess the purpose of Aunt Ming's message last night asking him to come back.
Mingxian spoke up at the right moment, "It was me who called. Zhaojing hasn't been back for so long, don't you miss him?"
It was just a casual remark, but it sent a shiver down Lin Zaoyi's spine. Had her mother discovered something again...?
It's all my fault for being so useless.
She'll accept whatever scolding she gets.
Uncle Tan's voice reached my ears, "I really don't want to. We can see each other at the company anytime. But Zao Yi, it's been a while since I've seen your brother Zhao Jing. Don't you miss him?"
She gasped, "Oh?" How was she supposed to answer that...?
Fortunately, her mother interjected, her voice tinged with laughter, "You should ask Jiani."
As she spoke, she peered into the house, but saw no one. "Will Jia Ni be home for dinner tonight?"
Father Tan: "I'll have to go back later, just leave the vegetables for later."
Lin Zaoyi ate the meal absentmindedly, not even knowing whether the fish in front of her was sweet or savory when she put down her chopsticks.
"Zaoyi," her mother called.
She turned her head hesitantly, and her mother smiled gently, "Go put on a coat and come for a walk with me."
Immediately, Mingxian turned her gaze to the other side, "Zhaojing, play a game of chess with your father for a while first."
Tan Zhaojing nodded.
In the courtyard, the mother and daughter encountered Tan Jiani, who was returning home late.
"Aunt Ming, are you taking a walk so late?"
"I'll be back in a bit, you go eat quickly."
"Okay~" Tan Jiani was hungry, so she rushed into the inner room. When she saw her brother, she stopped clamoring for food.
It's no wonder she overthinks things; it's just too coincidental.
First, my brother hasn't been back for a long time. Second, in the dead of winter, Aunt Ming insisted on taking Lin Zaoyi out; she must have something to say.
For example, he advised Lin Zaoyi to leave her brother.
Tan Youge inadvertently let slip that the two broke up because of Aunt Ming.
I understand, but I don't support it.
She grabbed her brother and said, "Get out of here right now."
Just as Mr. Tan finished setting up the chessboard, he heard this and glanced at the little devil, "Where are you sending your brother?"
Tan Jiani, lacking any sense of propriety, clicked her tongue at her father and said, "Be quiet."
Pushing his brother, he shouted, "Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
Otherwise, Lin Zaoyi will run away again!
A corner of the courtyard.
This time, Lin Zaoyi took the initiative to speak, "Are you asking about Brother Zhaojing?"
Mingxian looked at her daughter for a moment, "You're together again?"
Lin Zaoyi didn't know whether to shake her head or nod. Before she could give a definite answer, her nose started to sting.
"Mom, I...I..."
After hesitating for a long time, it finally turned into, "I'm sorry..."
She heard footsteps behind her and instinctively turned around. The approaching figure was tall and slender.
Her eyelashes fluttered, "What are you doing here..."
Tan Zhaojing smiled gently, "I'll stay with you."
He stepped forward, took her hand, and pulled her behind him. This one action startled Lin Zaoyi so much that tears welled up in her eyes.
She could have held back, but Tan Zhaojing was so bold. The tears hanging on her eyelashes slid down her face with the force of the movement. She didn't have time to wipe them away and frantically shook her wrists, but couldn't shake them off.
He was holding on too tightly.
Mingxian's eyelids almost involuntarily twitched; she had completely lost her temper. "What are you trying to do?!"
