Chapter 5 Could Lin Zaoyi be trying to become my cousin-in-law?
Lin Zaoyi said "Oh," and replied, "No need, no need."
"Can you drive?" Tan Zhaojing suddenly asked.
She nodded instinctively. "Is something the matter?"
Tan Zhaojing said, "I have mail to reply to on the way, you can open it."
Lin Zaoyi's first reaction was to refuse, "My driving skills are terrible."
Tan Zhaojing: "I won't make you pay for the accident."
Lin Zaoyi: "..."
She's worried about herself, okay? She's expensive too.
However, this person didn't give him a chance to refuse and walked straight ahead, saying, "I'll wait for you in the car."
In the height of summer, it's rare to have so many clouds. Clusters of clouds surround the blazing sun, reducing half of the heat.
In the parking lot, Pullman stood conspicuously parked. The man had already gotten into the passenger seat. Lin Zaoyi walked around the front of the car and climbed into the driver's seat. As soon as she got in, she smelled the scent of wormwood, which was similar to the smell in his room.
It smells nice.
It's mild, not strong.
"Do you know the way?" Tan Zhaojing turned his head to look at him.
Lin Zaoyi nodded, "Yes, I know him."
I've been to the Tan family's old house once, and I remember the way.
At first, the car was able to drive smoothly until the person next to me made a phone call to Brother He Nian and asked him about the surveillance footage from that night.
How could she not be upset?
While telling myself not to panic, that the evidence had been deleted, my hands gripping the steering wheel were trembling slightly.
The light was red, and as soon as we stopped, I looked at him. Even though I could hear him, I still wanted to see him say something with my own eyes.
The man tapped his thigh rhythmically with his fingertips, his eyelids slightly drooping, as if he were thinking.
A moment later, he said to the person on the other end of the phone, "If you can't find it, give me a list of the people who came in and out that night."
“…………………”
Is this even possible?
Perhaps her gaze was too blatant, he tilted his head slightly, raising his brow bone. Perhaps because he felt guilty, he felt there was something deeper in the corner of his eye.
She turned around abruptly.
There are 17 seconds left on the red light.
With three seconds left on the countdown, Tan Zhaojing hung up the phone. "Did you have something to say to me just now?"
She subtly adjusted her breathing. "No."
Tan Zhaojing hummed in agreement and then fell silent.
After that, silence enveloped the car.
During this period of silence, Lin Zaoyi's mind was racing. There was only one way: she had to remove herself from the list before Tan Zhaojing got his hands on it.
Looking for Xixi!
Fifteen minutes later, the car drove into the Tan family's old house. Because her reversing skills were terrible and the parking space was too challenging, Lin Zaoyi parked the car in the middle of the aisle. "Brother Zhaojing, my parking skills are not very good, so I'll have to trouble you to do it yourself."
Tan Zhaojing: "It's alright, let's just stop here."
Lin Zaoyi: "...Okay."
She didn't plan to go in with them. "Brother Zhaojing, you go first. I'm going to call my colleague."
It was just a normal sentence, but he turned around and glanced at me. Before I could even figure out what was in his eyes, he had already turned and left.
"..."
Without time to think about anything else, I moved to the shade of a tree and dialed Meng Xiaoniu's number, "Xixi, please help me!"
Meng Jinxi was sprawled on the sofa as if she had no bones. She casually continued, "What's up?"
In the next half minute, Lin Zaoyi spoke briefly and concisely.
Meng Jinxi understood, but she didn't understand why. "Why?"
Suddenly realizing something, she sat bolt upright. "Could that person be someone important? Are they investigating you?"
He then said to himself, "That shouldn't be the case. If they were really someone important, they wouldn't wait several months to investigate them, would they?"
It's hard to explain in a few words, and Lin Zaoyi didn't want to escalate the matter, as it wasn't honorable.
"I'll talk to you later when I have time. First, get the manager to remove my name from the list. Be quick, Xixi, my life is in your hands!"
“No problem.” Meng Jinxi suppressed her curiosity. “I just need someone to take care of it.”
She asked about something else, "Meng Henian said that Brother Zhaojing is back. Have you met him? How did it go?"
Lin Zaoyi was already used to Xixi calling He Nian by his full name. If their sibling relationship wasn't good, they could still address each other like that in private. But He Nian always granted Xixi's requests.
Let's just say it's Xixi's teenage rebellion.
She answered truthfully, "Not very good."
Meng Jinxi's tone changed slightly, "Don't say he was mean to you."
Lin Zaoyi: "No, not really. I'm just a little scared. Let's talk another day. You go and get the list sorted out for me first."
After hanging up the phone, Lin Zaoyi didn't go back to her room immediately. The thought of a group of unrelated elders sitting inside kept her on edge.
And then they added Tan Zhaojing.
"Zaoyi." A clear, melodious voice rolled in on the sunlit breeze. She lifted her eyes slightly; the person who came was tall and slender with clear, bright features.
Talking about a big star – Tan You.
She met Tan You three years ago. During her first summer vacation in college, she was bored and went to work part-time on a film set. At that time, Tan You was still a newcomer. Xi Xi was also there, playing the villainous third female lead. She was as venomous as a cobra in the play, but as cute as a baby off-screen.
After a few encounters, the three of them became acquainted.
Tan You stopped nearby. "Why don't you go in?"
Lin Zaoyi waved her phone. "I made a phone call."
Tan Youdang made an excuse that he was present the first two times Zaoyi came here, but he was always awkward and quiet, only responding politely with a word or two when his name was called.
He gave me a knowing look and said, "I'll play with you."
He gestured with his chin toward the stone bench in the pavilion, "Let's go sit down. With Brother Zhaojing here, they won't notice us for a while."
Lin Zaoyi thought it was feasible.
A few meters away in the living room, a figure stood on the balcony outside the hall, clearly on a work call, but his gaze, falling under the blazing sun, was as cold as an autumn breeze.
The call ended, but he still showed no sign of going back inside.
Tan Jiani walked closer with her hands behind her back. "Brother, what are you doing standing here?"
As I was asking the question, my gaze shifted to the side, and in the pavilion, Brother Tan You was chatting and laughing with Lin Zaoyi, looking very happy.
The brother's gaze seemed to be over there, yet it didn't.
She clicked her tongue. "Is Lin Zaoyi trying to become my cousin-in-law?"
However, after speaking, there was no response for several seconds, so she nudged her brother's arm and said, "I'm talking to you."
He turned his head, "What did you say?"
"Of course—"
The words caught in my throat. My brother looked listless and pale, so why did I feel a chill?
"Bad mood?"
Just then, I heard my grandfather's voice, "Hasn't Zhaojing finished his call yet?"
His tone was not harsh, but gentle.
Not only Tan Jia Ni, but the others also rarely saw this side of the old man. You know, the old man is known for his strictness.
But at this moment, he had a very amiable expression.
Everyone knew perfectly well why: firstly, Zhaojing was the old man's handpicked successor; secondly, thanks to Zhaojing, the group's business had reached a new level in the past two years, and its influence in Beijing was now unshakeable.
The second branch of the Tan family had no intention of competing, and knew they couldn't win. Besides, Tan You had no desire to go into business.
It's even less likely that the third son of the Tan family would be involved; he's in politics and holds an important position.
Seeing that her brother didn't respond, Tan Jiani assumed he hadn't heard her and whispered, "Brother, Grandpa is calling you."
Tan Zhaojing hummed in agreement, then glanced at something before looking away in an instant—a fleeting glance so quick it was practically nonexistent.
He moved into the living room. "Grandpa, is dinner ready?"
Upon hearing this, Mr. Tan glanced at the time: 11:47.
The old man has a regular daily routine, and lunch is always at 12 o'clock, which is an unwritten rule.
"Wait a little longer."
"It's alright." The old man waved the teacup lid in mid-air. "Let's eat."
Everyone stood up with the old man.
Madam Tan quickly scanned her surroundings but couldn't find her son. Just then, Jia Ni's voice broke in, "Second Aunt, are you looking for Brother Tan You?"
He pointed his finger outwards and said, "He's chatting with Lin Zaoyi outside."
He deliberately added, "He was so happy."
