Chapter 22 What Your Uncle and I Are Playing

Tie Dan's father was begging for mercy as Tie Dan's mother grabbed one of his ears.

Tie Dan's mother grumbled, "I told you to go to the fields after you finished eating. Look, everyone else has found fish today, but we haven't!"

Originally, Tie Dan's mother didn't want to go to the fields today; she wanted to stay home and do some laundry. But Tie Dan's father insisted on making her go with him.

It's infuriating! On the way back, I saw many people in the village picking up fish and rushing home.

If we don't go, then we'll have fish to eat tonight!

"Auntie, Uncle, what are you doing?" Si Gou poked his head out and asked curiously at the front gate of Tie Dan's house.

Tie Dan's mother immediately let go of Tie Dan's father's ear, and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Your uncle and I were playing. Si Gou, did you come to play with Tie Dan? I don't know where the kid has gone off to, he's not home!"

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Tie Dan's father jumped several meters away, muttering to himself as he rubbed his ears.

When Tie Dan's mother heard him muttering to himself, she glared at him fiercely, and Tie Dan's father was so frightened that he quickly covered his ears again.

"Auntie, I'm not here to see Tiedan. My sister asked me to bring you some fish," Sigou said, picking up the fish he was holding.

I don't know what's wrong, but seeing Tie Dan's parents arguing, Gu Si Gou's mood suddenly plummeted.

In the past, when my father was still alive, he would sometimes bicker with my mother.

Back then, although I was often bullied by my grandparents and the uncles and aunts from the second wife's side, I was really happy.

Tie Dan's mother quickly waved her hand and said, "You can eat this fish yourselves, there's no need to send it to us."

Tie Dan's dad muttered, "He just beat me up because I didn't have any fish to eat, why doesn't he want it anymore!"

Tie Dan's father spoke very softly, and only Tie Dan's mother could hear him.

Tie Dan's mother glared at him, and Tie Dan's father jumped several meters away again.

"Auntie, just take it. We have plenty more at home. I need to go back and help out." With that, she handed the fish to Tie Dan's mother and ran off.

"This child, really," Tie Dan's mother said with a smile as she took the fish back.

Because, on her way back, she heard from others that the four siblings had collected a lot of fish, and that they were the ones who found them first.

That's how neighbors interact; being too polite can actually create distance.

I'll just give them some of the good stuff I get in the future.

This scene was witnessed by Aunt Gu, whose eyes nearly popped out of her head.

"Pah! What a bunch of ingrates! What right do they have to eat fish and meat? Only my son, a scholar, deserves to eat it!" Niu Cuihua spat and slammed her courtyard gate shut.

Today, while fishing, for some reason, the villagers all tacitly refrained from informing the second branch of the Gu family.

As soon as Aunt Gu turned around, she saw her son standing behind her and was startled.

"Son, what are you doing behind me?" Niu Cuihua asked, patting her chest.

Gu Shuwen said coldly, "Mother, my eldest sister and the others have already severed ties with us. Don't say things like that again. I'm not studying today; I'll help you make adobe bricks!"

"Shuwen, your hands are for holding a pen, how can you do such rough work? I'll do it myself!" Niu Cuihua said, pushing Gu Shuwen into the house.

Gu Shuwen had no choice but to pick up the book again and continue reading.

Although Grandma and Grandpa scolded her this morning, she still doesn't seem to learn her lesson.

Let her do it herself. Two hundred mud bricks, and no one is helping her. She'll definitely be exhausted! Hopefully, she'll learn her lesson after this punishment.

As Gu Sigou walked home, Granny Yang also arrived at Gu Lili's house.

The sharp-eyed Gu Lili spotted Granny Yang immediately. "Granny Yang, what brings you here?"

Grandma Yang carried the fish into the yard and said, "Lili, you siblings have it tough enough as it is, why are you giving me fish? I'm not hungry, why would I take your fish? You can keep them for yourselves."

Gu Lili smiled and pointed at Gu Erniu, saying, "Grandma Yang, look, we still have so much left, we can't possibly finish it all. Please take it back and eat it, why did you bring it back?"

Grandma Yang was relieved when she saw the fish at Lili's house. She didn't refuse anymore and took the fish home to cook lunch.

"Erniu, keep some for yourself. After we finish eating, let's take them to Grandpa and Grandma," Gu Lili said with a smile.

Because she had already sold a lot of fish and shrimp in the mall, she didn't plan to take them to town to sell at this moment.

Gu Erniu nodded and said, "Okay, I understand, sister!"

Gu Lili took the cleaned fish, some jujubes, and prawns to the kitchen to cook.

She had already started cooking the rice, and it's done now.

Gu Lili scooped out the rice and started frying the fish.

Now that we have lard, it's perfect for frying fish, and we also steam shrimp and crabs to eat.

When Si Gou returned to the gate of the courtyard with a heavy heart, he smelled a delicious fragrance.

In an instant, all unhappiness vanished.

He jogged into the kitchen, just as Gu Lili had finished cooking.

"Fourth Dog, hurry up and call your second brother and third sister for dinner!" Gu Lili said with a smile.

Today, the air in Guzhuang is filled with the aroma of fish.

Gu Lili and her three siblings ate with great relish, because there were still so many fish left at home.

So everyone ate their fill.

After they finished eating, Gu Lili originally planned to have Gu Huanhuan watch the house while the three siblings went to their maternal grandmother's house.

However, there were still some fish that hadn't been properly prepared. Gu Lili planned to eat some of them, and dry the rest into dried fish, which would also have a unique flavor.

Gu Lili left Gu Erniu at home to prepare the fish while she took Sigou to her maternal grandmother's house.

As they arrived at the entrance of Lijia Village, the sound of children reading aloud reached the ears of the brother and sister.

There was a school at the entrance of Lijia Village, but the teacher there only knew a few characters.

Those with spare money would pay a few coins as tuition to learn a few characters.

It's pretty much like an introductory class.

"At birth, people are inherently good, and their natures are similar..."

The children inside followed their teacher, reciting the Three Character Classic fluently.

Gu Lili looked at Gu Sigou, who was filled with envy, and said, "Sigou, how about I take you to school too?"

Gu Sigou thought for a moment, then looked away and smiled, "Sister, I don't want to go to school. I want to stay with my second brother and farm the land!"

Gu Sigou felt that if he went to school, he would become like Gu Shuwen, unable to lift anything, which would make his older brothers and sisters very tired.

Moreover, he had heard that tuition fees were very high, and he didn't want to waste the money.

Gu Lili, of course, saw what Gu Sigou was thinking, and at this moment she just hoped that the wheat would sprout soon.
