Chapter 9 Looking down on people

She didn't know how much five taels of silver was, nor how long the allocated grain would last.

However, she believed what her sister said.

From now on, they will no longer go hungry.

After finishing breakfast, Uncle Dazhu arrived at the Gu family's thatched cottage.

"Lili, I'll take you to town today to exchange your land deeds," Uncle Dazhu said with a smile.

Gu Lili quickly picked up the basket she had borrowed from Aunt Zhang and followed Uncle Dazhu toward the town.

She plans to go to town today to buy some salt or something.

The children stayed at home. Gu Erniu was already twelve years old and could help his younger siblings with chores.

Now, their family also owns three acres of fertile land, all of which are used by the second branch of the Gu family to grow grain.

There were also three acres of wasteland (wasteland is land that has not yet been cultivated, because the soil is not fertile and has many stones; the people of Guzhuang usually use it to plant trees). One acre of it was cultivated by Li Xihua and her children and planted with wheat.

The other two acres of land belonging to the Gu family's second house were not planted with anything, so they can be left alone for the time being.

Gu Erniu then took his younger siblings to the fields to weed and dig up some wild vegetables to eat.

Gu Lili followed Uncle Dazhu eastward. The town was located on the east side of the sea, so it was called Donghai Town.

As they passed by the sea, Gu Lili asked, "Uncle Dazhuang, have you ever eaten anything from the sea?"

"Lili, you mean eating fish? I've eaten it before. There are often fish stranded on the beach. If you're lucky, you can find one that doesn't smell bad and take it home to eat."

Gu Dazhu's eyes lit up when he talked about this; the fish was really delicious.

However, they are not often found.

You can occasionally see fish in shallower waters, and some people try to catch them with sharp branches, but it still depends on luck.

"Does anyone use fishing nets to catch fish?" Gu Lili continued to ask Uncle Dazhu as they walked.

Uncle Dazhu looked bewildered. "Fishing net? What's that?"

"Well, I heard it mentioned by some strangers passing by. I thought maybe you, Uncle Dazhu, are very knowledgeable, so I was just curious and asked you." Gu Lili quickly changed the subject. "Uncle Dazhu, how much longer until we arrive?"

Uncle Dazhu, hearing someone say he was knowledgeable for the first time, scratched his head somewhat embarrassedly and said, "Almost there, almost there, we'll be there in another hour."

When Gu Lili heard this, she almost collapsed on the spot. It took them about half an hour, or almost an hour, to walk from their home to the beach.

If it takes another hour to walk, then it will be two hours.

So, the distance is approximately twelve kilometers.

It takes six hours to walk there and back, no wonder Uncle Dazhu came to call me to go to town so early.

Getting a land deed or buying some things takes at least an hour or two, and if you're slow, it'll be dark by the time you get there.

At this moment, Gu Lili had another goal in mind: to earn money to buy a carriage.

Actually, there are oxcarts in the village that go to the town, but they only go when there is a market in town, and it costs one coin to ride to the town.

The village head was worried that things might get complicated if he waited too long, so he had his son walk with Gu Lili there.

Waaah, the village head is such a nice person.

Along the way, Gu Lili also specifically asked Uncle Dazhu about salt.

Sure enough, the salt here is controlled by the government and is very expensive.

However, extremely poor families would use wood ash or moldy soil from the corners of walls to extract salty crystals to replace table salt.

Along the way, Gu Lili chatted idly with Uncle Dazhu, never slowing down her pace.

We finally arrived just before noon.

Gu Lili sighed again. She had wasted her morning porridge and was hungry again.

Fearing that the county officials would be in a hurry to have lunch and would delay their return home, Uncle Dazhu and Gu Lili decided to take care of their business first and then find something to eat.

With Uncle Dazhu leading the way, everything went very smoothly.

Everything was done in less than half an hour.

After leaving the county government office, Gu Lili smiled and said to Uncle Dazhu, "Uncle Dazhu, thank you so much for your help today. Let me treat you to a bowl of noodles."

Uncle Dazhu waved his hand immediately after hearing this, "No need, no need, Lili, you'll need money for many more things in the future."

Uncle Dazhu has already made plans for Gu Lili's family. Although Gu Lili has a huge sum of five taels of silver, their house is on the verge of collapse.

It will need repairs later, and there are also his two younger brothers whose weddings will cost money.

Where would we use a little girl's money?

If his family weren't so poor, he should have paid for it.

Seemingly afraid that he wouldn't be able to refuse, Uncle Dazhu made an excuse that he needed to go and buy some things.

He arranged to meet Gu Lili at the East Gate in an hour, then fled from her as if escaping.

After walking a few steps, Uncle Dazhu seemed to remember something important and jogged back.

Uncle Dazhu lowered his voice and said to Gu Lili, "Lili, you must keep your money safe and not flaunt your wealth."

"Understood, Uncle Dazhu," Gu Lili said with a smile.

Uncle Dazhu nodded and left without looking back.

Gu Lili then wandered around Donghai Town by herself.

Arriving at a noodle stall, Gu Lili ordered a bowl of vegetarian noodles for two coins.

Having walked so much and done so much work, Gu Lili was indeed hungry.

In no time, Gu Lili slurped up the entire bowl of noodles, soup and all.

She needed to buy some salt and oil later. Since the original owner of this body had never been to town before, Gu Lili asked the owner of the noodle stall.

The shopkeeper kindly gave Gu Lili directions, and she headed in that direction with her basket on her back.

When we arrived at the salt shop, the owner was a plump middle-aged man who had probably just finished lunch and was dozing off on a stool.

Gu Lili smiled and asked, "Boss, how much is the salt?"

When Wang Fugui, the owner of the salt shop, heard someone speaking, he opened his eyes and saw a ragged little girl. He couldn't help but look at Gu Lili with disdain.

"Salt costs eighty coins a pound!" Wang Fugui said impatiently.

"What!" Gu Lili exclaimed in disbelief, "How can it be so expensive!"

Wang Fugui grew increasingly impatient. "Buy it if you can afford it, otherwise get out!"

As she spoke, she rolled her eyes at Gu Lili.

Gu Lili immediately got a little angry and retorted, "How can you look down on people like that!"

Although Gu Lili really didn't want to buy from him, she also didn't want to be mistreated for no reason.

Wang Fugui immediately stood up, pointed at Gu Lili, and cursed, "Who are you calling a dog! With your poor and pathetic appearance, you dare to eat salt? You should take a good look at yourself before you come in!"

Looking at Wang Fugui's fat body, Gu Lili knew that if they really started fighting, she would definitely be slapped away.

He immediately laughed and said, "Uncle, to be honest, I was bitten by a dog when I was a kid, and you seem a little scared."
