Chapter 46 Kindness Also Has Principles

This sweetness was a rare treat in their time.

To be precise, it's something that people at the bottom of society rarely have.

"This porridge is delicious, and the fish and vegetables are really well made! Lili, you are really amazing!" Grandpa Village Head couldn't help but praise Gu Lili.

Gu Lili smiled and said, "If it's delicious, everyone should eat more!"

Gu Lili made large portions of everything today, so there's plenty to go around.

The three siblings, Gu Erniu and his sister, ate with gusto, which also whetted everyone's appetite.

The rice that Gu Lili cooked was completely devoured.

After finishing their meal, the people who had helped felt a little embarrassed. They all felt that they hadn't done anything that morning, yet they had eaten so much food from Gu Lili's house, and they felt quite ashamed.

They all hurried out to work. Gu Lili handed the bowls to Gu Huanhuan to wash, and then they all went out to help.

Taking into account the issue of the four siblings being of different genders, the village head specially built two shacks for them.

Because everyone was worried that Gu Lili would have to cook, they all worked hard to build the structure before lunch.

Gu Huanhuan finished cleaning up the dishes and then joined in the chores.

Several children were involved, some carrying straw, some carrying tree branches, and others pulling on straw ropes.

In less than two hours, both shacks were almost finished. All that was left was to prepare a place for sleeping.

Looking at the two shacks that had been set up, the village head smiled with satisfaction, "Lili, we'll head back now. You and your brother can take care of the rest."

The village head hadn't built a shack for many years, and he never expected that he could build one that looked so decent.

There's a saying, something like, "His skills haven't aged," which probably describes me perfectly.

Looking at the newly built shack, Gu Lili was filled with gratitude. "Grandpa Village Head, uncles and aunts, please stay for lunch. I'll have it ready in a bit."

The village head shook his head repeatedly and said, "We won't eat. We have things to do at home, so we'll head back first. If you encounter any difficulties, just let us know if you come to our house. As the village head, I will definitely help if I can!"

As the village headman spoke, he called out to the workers to go home.

Watching their departing figures, Gu Lili solemnly said to the three siblings, "Erniu, Huanhuan, Sigou, we must remember the kindness of the village head and our uncles and aunts. If others are good to us, we should be good to them too, understand?"

The three siblings nodded repeatedly.

“Sister, I understand. Like Grandpa and Grandma, we should remember those who are not nice to us. If they are not nice to us, we should not be nice to them either, right?” Gu Sigou looked up and asked innocently.

Gu Lili patted Gu Sigou's head with satisfaction and said, "Sigou is right. We need to remember what's bad to us. If others bully us, we have to fight back! We can't rely on our kindness and then be bullied and forced to fight back!"

The three siblings immediately thought of their mother. Yes, if their mother hadn't been so kind and weak, she certainly wouldn't have ended up in such a predicament.

"People must be kind, but kindness has principles. You must consider yourself first before considering others. You should only help others when it doesn't harm your own interests, understand?" Gu Lili continued.

"I understand, sister."

"I know too."

"Me too, me too, I know too!"

All three of them repeatedly said that they understood.

Gu Lili laughed and said, "Now that you know, Huanhuan, you go start the fire, I'll cook. Erniu, go check on the wheat in our field. Sigou, go dig some wild vegetables at the door to feed the chickens!"

The four of them divided the work and then each did their own task.

The weather was gloomy this morning, but now the sun is shining.

The four of them were in much better spirits now. With a shelter, at least they wouldn't have to worry about not having a place to sleep at night.

As long as the family is safe and sound, sleeping in a shack can actually be quite blissful.

Gu Lili planned to make something simple for lunch. After lunch, she would have to clean up their collapsed hut and dig out anything usable.

For example, the beds they used to sleep on were made of adobe bricks, and they moved them out to use them, which was better than sleeping directly on the ground.

Also, the cloth that Gu Lili had Gu Erniu tear off came in handy at this moment.

We'll dig it out later and make a quilt. We'll buy some more fabric for clothes next time we go to the market.

That seems to be all.

Gu Lili made a pot of vegetable porridge and then made a cold fern salad, which was her lunch today.

After preparing the meal, Gu Lili noticed that Gu Erniu hadn't returned yet, so she decided to go out and greet him.

After leaving the courtyard, Gu Erniu was nowhere to be seen.

Gu Lili walked towards her field, and the further she walked, the more her heart clenched.

The freezing rain these past two days has been so severe that it has broken many of the wheat seedlings in the fields.

Not only wheat seedlings, but also many tree branches along the roadside were broken.

Along the way, we encountered several villagers, all of whom were sighing and complaining.

Gu Lili couldn't help but sigh. If the wheat seedlings were to freeze and break, the already low yield of grain would definitely be further reduced.

It seems that grain prices will be high this year, so I need to make plans early.

As Gu Lili walked forward, she saw Gu Erniu squatting in the field, seemingly doing something.

Gu Lili quickened her pace and walked towards Gu Erniu.

"Erniu, what are you doing?" Gu Huanhuan asked, looking at Gu Erniu who was squatting on the ground.

Gu Erniu raised his hand, which was covered with broken wheat seedlings.

Gu Erniu's eyes were red and filled with tears as he looked at the wheat seedlings with heartache.

"Sister, so much of our wheat has been damaged by the frost! What are we going to do?" Gu Erniu said with a heavy nasal voice.

These crops are the lifeblood of farmers, even though the land was only allocated to them by their grandfather a few days ago.

However, it was her mother who, before she passed away, led the four of them to plant the seeds.

When Gu Jingsheng agreed to share the land with them, Gu Erniu was overjoyed and wished he could come to the field several times a day.

He comes to weed almost every day, and if even a single weed grows, Gu Erniu pulls it out as soon as he notices it.

We tried to prevent them from affecting the wheat's growth, but the sudden freezing rain broke all the wheat.

This made Gu Erniu feel extremely upset.

He didn't know why God treated them this way, taking away both their father and mother.

The house collapsed last night, and the wheat froze to death today.

This series of blows left Gu Erniu somewhat at a loss.

Does God not want them to live a good life?
