Chapter 335 Baked Buns

The carriage traveled for several hours, and as noon approached, Chang'an stopped it by a stream.

The car was full of steamed buns and mantou prepared by Grandma Li and Gu Chenxi, so none of them planned to eat out for the next few days.

Once the carriage came to a stop, Gu Lili leaned out of the carriage, stretched, and jumped down.

The location chosen by Chang'an was indeed extremely beautiful. The carriage stopped right under a huge locust tree, whose dense branches provided complete shade and made it very cool.

There's a grassy area right next to it, perfect for chasing the wind and grazing on some green grass.

Li Ershu and Chang'an unloaded the carriage from Zhuifeng so that he could drink some water, eat some grass, and rest well before continuing his journey.

Seeing that she couldn't get involved, Gu Lili simply picked up the gourd and prepared to go to the stream to fetch some water to drink.

The stream was crystal clear, and you could vaguely see small fish and shrimp swimming happily inside.

Gu Lili never felt tired when driving the horse-drawn carriage.

Perhaps because the journey to Donghai Town by carriage was usually short, Gu Lili felt dizzy after sitting in the carriage for several hours.

She squatted by the stream and scooped up water with her hands to wash her face.

The cool stream water instantly made Gu Lili feel much more awake.

Just as Gu Lili was about to use the gourd to fetch water from the stream, she discovered that there were quite a few apple snail eggs in the stream.

This made Gu Lili feel a chill.

She glanced back at Chang'an and Li Tiansheng, who were busy at work, and immediately bought purified water from her spatial storage and poured it into the gourd.

Once the water was filled, Gu Lili carried the gourd back home.

Once they reached the tree, they could see what the two were doing.

It turned out that while Gu Lili was fetching water, the two of them actually started a fire.

"Chang'an, Second Uncle, why are you starting a fire?" Gu Lili asked curiously.

It wasn't cold at the moment, and they were just planning to eat some steamed buns and dumplings. They didn't have any wild game to roast, which puzzled her a bit.

As Chang'an started the fire, he agreed, "These buns are filled with meat. If you eat them cold, you might get a stomachache. They'll be better if you roast them."

Li Tiansheng originally said he would just eat it like that, but Chang'an said that Lili is a girl and should be taken good care of.

Li Tiansheng immediately went to gather firewood.

There are quite a few dead branches under this locust tree, so it's not difficult to find them.

Gu Lili blushed slightly when she heard Chang'an say that.

Li Ershu was busy adding firewood and didn't notice anything unusual about Gu Lili.

“Yes, my mother told me not to eat cold meat, or my stomach will hurt,” Li Ershu chimed in.

Gu Lili glanced at Chang'an, then went to pick up some branches.

Since we're going to bake buns, we naturally need a handy tool.

Gu Lili picked up the branches, washed them clean, and by the time she took them over, the fire was already lit.

Meat-filled buns don't keep well, so they decided to eat the meat-filled ones first.

"Lili, where did you put the steamed buns and mantou? I can't find them!" Li Ershu looked at Gu Lili with a questioning expression.

He had personally placed the steamed buns and mantou in the carriage, but he couldn't find them anywhere after searching the whole place.

Gu Lili blushed slightly, stuck out her tongue, and quickly walked towards the carriage.

She was so focused on picking up branches that she completely forgot about this.

Fearing the food would spoil, she secretly put it into her spatial storage after getting into the carriage.

If the food stays in the space without spoiling, then the family's good intentions won't be wasted.

"Second Uncle, you must not have looked carefully. Wait here, I'll go get it!" he said with an embarrassed smile as he walked away.

Gu Lili pretended to rummage through the carriage for a while before taking out the steamed buns.

“Look, isn’t this it?” Gu Lili said to Li Ershu, holding the steamed bun in her hand.

When Li Ershu saw the steamed buns, he was completely stunned.

He had searched everywhere but had not found any trace of Baozi.

Did I really not look carefully enough?

Seeing her second uncle's bewildered expression, Gu Lili secretly suppressed a laugh.

To prevent her second uncle from thinking any further, Gu Lili took the steamed bun in her hand and handed it to him.

"Second Uncle, start grilling! I'm starving!" Gu Lili said with a beaming smile.

When Li Ershu and Chang'an heard Gu Lili say she was hungry, they quickly took the steamed buns and skewered them on a tree branch to roast.

However, Li Ershu kept muttering about this matter while grilling.

Gu Lili simply moved the branch with the buns on it to the side, away from Li Ershu.

Gu Lili really didn't do it on purpose, but it made Li Ershu suspicious.

The buns were baked very quickly.

Gu Lili looked at the slightly burnt buns outside and swallowed hard.

The aroma of caramelized wood is simply too tempting.

She took the steamed bun, blew on it a few times, and gently took a bite.

As she chewed, Gu Lili's eyebrows unconsciously rose.

These baked buns have a truly unique flavor.

"It smells so good!" Li Ershu exclaimed between bites.

Chang'an nodded repeatedly as he ate.

Perhaps because of the bumpy ride, which had helped digest their breakfast, the three of them ate the baked buns with extra relish.

As the three were eating, they saw two people walking towards them from afar.

At first, Gu Lili didn't pay much attention, just assuming they were just passing by.

Unexpectedly, the two stopped in front of the three.

"What business do you two have?" Chang'an looked at the two people in front of him with a wary expression.

Gu Lili raised her head upon hearing the sound and looked at the two people in front of her.

The visitors were two men, one fat and one thin, both around twenty-five or twenty-six years old.

Judging from their clothes, they were dressed in silk, but walking to this desolate place was indeed somewhat suspicious.

This place is in the middle of nowhere.

Judging from their attire, they weren't the kind of people who couldn't afford to ride in a horse-drawn carriage or oxcart.

Moreover, the two men's faces made Gu Lili feel both familiar and uneasy.

It's not that these two are extremely ugly, but both have relatively long and narrow eyes, straight eyebrows, low nose bridges, and oval faces.

After looking at it for a while, Gu Lili finally realized why she felt unwell.

These two men look similar to Japanese pirates, no wonder I felt uncomfortable.

However, the place Gu Lili traveled to was one that had never appeared in historical records, so how could there be Japanese pirates there?

He immediately mocked himself, realizing he had been judging people by their appearance too much.

"We're sorry to bother you, but we were just passing by and smelled your food. It smelled delicious, so we wanted to ask you for some," one of the men said apologetically.
