Chapter 6 Time to Eat White Rice

Gu Jingsheng was furious today. He never expected that his good son would give birth to such a thing!

None of them are good!

Ignoring Gu Jingsheng's curses, Gu Lili said to the village head, "Words are not enough. Please help us draw up a letter of severance and sign it."

The village head had received some schooling when he was young, so it wasn't difficult for him.

The letter of severance was quickly drawn up, and Gu Lili and her three younger siblings signed it. Gu Jingsheng also signed it without any hesitation.

Two copies were made, and Gu Lili carefully put away the other copy.

The crowd helped Gu Lili and her siblings carry their belongings to their thatched hut.

Grandma Gu looked at the things that had been taken away, and this time she really couldn't hold back. Her vision went black, she fell backward, and completely fainted.

Hearing the cries behind her, Gu Lili walked home without turning her head.

Everyone put their things down and left.

"Lili, with the help of the village head and other villagers, you shouldn't be bullied anymore. It's all our fault for not being able to bring you back to the Li family to live." Old Mrs. Li couldn't help but cover her face and cry as she looked at the thin Lili.

The Li family wasn't wealthy. Of the three of his uncles, only his eldest uncle, Li Qingshan, was able to get married because they were poor.

Gu Lili patted Grandma Li's shoulder and said, "Grandma, don't cry. Everyone helped us get our things back today, and we've cut ties with those people. Don't worry, I'll take good care of my younger brother and sister."

Gu Erniu stepped forward and said, "Grandma, I'm twelve years old this year. I can take good care of my older sister and younger brother and sister-in-law, so you don't need to worry."

Grandma Gu finally smiled with relief.

After exchanging pleasantries for a while, Gu Lili's uncle repaired the roof for her, and then the Li family got up and left.

No matter how much Gu Lili tried to persuade him to stay for dinner, he refused to eat there, so Gu Lili had no choice but to give up.

She knew that her grandmother's family was saving food for them.

Looking at the bare thatched hut and her emaciated younger siblings, Gu Lili sighed softly.

The only thing that made Gu Lili feel fortunate about was having a group of warm-hearted neighbors and such a wonderful family.

After all that fuss, Gu Lili was starving.

Fortunately, there is no shortage of food now.

Gu Lili called to her younger siblings to quickly start a fire and cook.

First, fill your stomach, then go out for a walk and see what kind of business you can make.

Upon arriving at the makeshift kitchen, Gu Lili, following the original owner's memories, found a broken pot.

Gu Erniu was in charge of starting the fire, while nine-year-old Gu Huanhuan took out the wild vegetables she had found yesterday to wash and cook.

Even Sigou, who was only seven years old, got up and went outside to fetch firewood.

Gu Lili couldn't help but sigh, "Children from poor families mature early."

"Huanhuan, wait a minute, let me see what you're holding," Gu Lili said to Gu Huanhuan, who was about to take the wooden basin out.

Gu Huanhuan felt that her eldest sister was acting strangely today, but she still stopped and brought the basin to Gu Lili.

Gu Lili held the wild vegetables in her hand, instantly feeling both amused and exasperated.

No wonder the original owner starved to death. This wild vegetable is alfalfa, which is very good at removing excess oil. It's sure to make you hungrier the more you eat.

Even in modern times, it must be stir-fried with plenty of oil to taste good.

Gu Lili smiled and asked, "Huanhuan, are there any other wild vegetables?"

Gu Huanhuan shook her head. It was only early spring, and although some shepherd's purse had sprouted, there weren't many.

Alfalfa is everywhere.

"Alright then, no need to wash. Let's just have some white rice today, no vegetables," Gu Lili said with a smile.

Let's not eat this alfalfa; it'll make us hungry.

The three children's eyes lit up the moment they heard that they could eat white rice.

Gu Lili is a good cook, so even a broken pot won't stump her.

Seeing the three little ones starving, Gu Lili scooped out two large bowls of rice, washed them, and set them aside for later use.

He scooped up some water and put it in the pot. Gu Erniu's fire was also very strong, and the water boiled quickly.

Gu Lili put the rinsed rice into the pot and stirred it with a spatula to prevent it from sticking.

Soon, the aroma of rice filled the air.

The three little ones were practically drooling, and Gu Lili couldn't help but swallow hard.

Looking at the rice that was almost cooked, Gu Lili used a spatula to scoop out the excess rice water, and subconsciously wanted to pour it away.

Because, in her previous life, she cooked like this, and rice porridge is too easy to make you gain weight.

Gu Erniu quickly spoke up to stop her, "Big sister, don't pour it out, scoop it into this big bowl, we'll drink it later!"

Gu Lili then realized what was happening, quickly stopped what she was doing, and ladled the rice porridge into a bowl.

With a little water left in the pot, Gu Lili instructed Gu Erniu to reduce the heat.

Rice cooked slowly like this is the most fragrant.

If you add some Chinese sausage, an egg, and some vegetables, wouldn't that be claypot rice?

But this was just a fantasy; there wasn't even salt in the thatched hut.

About fifteen minutes later, as Gu Lili lifted the lid of the pot, a burst of steam escaped, and the aroma of rice in the room became even stronger.

Gu Lili flipped the pot with a spatula, revealing golden and crispy rice crusts.

She served the rice, and the four siblings sat around the white rice, their mouths watering.

"Quickly, don't just stand there, eat!" Gu Lili said, and then picked up the bowl in front of her and started eating.

Seeing their older sister start eating, the three of them also began to wolf down their food.

The golden rice crust crunched in their mouths, and at that moment, the rice was even more delicious than meat!

The four of them were so hungry that they finished a bowl of rice in no time.

Fortunately, they cooked enough, and Gu Lili served herself a bowl.

They ate every last grain of rice, and after finishing their meal, the four of them ladled out a bowl of rice porridge and drank it down before finally stopping, satisfied and burping contentedly.

Gu Sigou picked up the large bowl of rice soup and kept licking it.

She mumbled, "Sister, this is the best thing I've ever eaten in my life. Can we eat like this every day?"

"Yeah, sister, I've never eaten so much before. Am I dreaming?" Gu Huanhuan said with a burp.

Gu Lili looked at her two younger siblings and laughed, "You two little gluttons! I'll make sure you never go hungry again."

Gu Erniu frowned. He had enjoyed the meal, but now that it was over, what should he do? It wasn't harvest season yet.

He was already twelve years old, so naturally he had more to think about than his two younger siblings.

Gu Erniu said, "Sister, from now on, let's not eat white rice anymore, okay? Let's drink some porridge or some gruel, so that we can have enough food for a while longer."

After hearing what Gu Erniu said, the two children, who had been happy, immediately looked disappointed.
