Chapter 8 I'll treat you to dinner sometime.

The speaker meant well, but the listener felt extremely uncomfortable.

While Ha Yue was thinking, Xue Jing had already come up with ten thousand relatively decent answers for her.

Coming to the countryside to experience life is a good explanation; it's also possible that the father's business failed and he contracted a farm here.

But when she actually told him that she wasn't doing well, he didn't feel at ease; instead, he felt an even stronger sense of irritation.

He suddenly realized that, given Ha Yue's abilities, perhaps her less-than-ideal situation was due to marrying the wrong person, and the fact that she wasn't wearing a ring might mean she was already divorced.

The statement that we can't ask for too much at this stage probably has ulterior motives. Could it be that she has already found another wealthy partner and is about to remarry?

As for the little pig behind him, grunting and groaning with the bumpy ride, Xue Jing's lips twitched. His remarriage partner was the owner of a pig farm.

Authors, especially novelists, are, after all, associative creatures. The mere thought of the word "boss" immediately conjured up stereotypical images of pot-bellied, greasy men in Xue Jing's mind. Indeed, in popular literature, these men typically abandon their wives and remarry a young, beautiful vixen.

Ha Yue's character design has never been that of a vixen in low-level games, but the problem is that she is not very old now, and seems to fit the relative description of "young".

If their lives were a popular novel, then how would Xue Jing define himself in this story? He would simply be the underdog that resonates most with straight men.

For Xue Jing, who has now achieved a certain social status, the fact that his ex-girlfriend kicked him to the curb when he was at his lowest point was already a landmark humiliation. But now, his ex-girlfriend, whom he used to try to climb the social ladder, may become the wife of a "boss".

He really didn't expect this contrast to be even more unacceptable to him than seeing Ha Yue marry into a wealthy family.

Isn't her dream to be a trophy wife displayed on the wall by men?

He didn't think that a small business owner who would make his wife do manual labor had the ability to collect trophies.

His temples started throbbing again, and the cold air he had swallowed on the electric scooter all the way was rising from his stomach. Xue Jing covered the lower half of his face with his fingers, turned his head to the other side, and coughed twice.

His voice sounded as if it had been polished by fine sand, revealing a hint of sincerity even in his disgust. "There's nothing wrong with raising pigs. Qin Yinglin, the founder of Muyuan, started with 22 pigs and now has assets exceeding 200 billion yuan."

A strong gust of wind just blew away the clouds that were obscuring the moon on the horizon.

The moonlight shone freely on the deserted country lanes, making Xue Jing's skin, which had been deprived of sunlight for a long time, appear even paler.

As he turned his head to cover his mouth, the cuff of his coat slid down two inches, revealing his pale, glowing wrist.

Ha Yue turned around, a sneer on her lips. She originally wanted to ask Xue Jing if he had some misunderstanding about the scale of his breeding business, but in that one glance, she saw the uneven scar under Xue Jing's watch.

Her heart felt like it was being clenched suddenly. She swallowed the joke back down, straightened her head, and then turned the electric tricycle to its maximum speed.

Ha Yue drove her electric car at high speed toward the city streetlights. The wind was really strong today, making her eyes a little sore. She suddenly remembered when she returned to Suicheng from Jicheng. It was also an autumn like this. The weather in Suicheng was really strange. Before winter even arrived, she caught a bad cold from the wind in her hometown and was bedridden for half a month.

She was born and raised here, so she wasn't used to it. Xue Jing, on the other hand, was used to a life of luxury and had always been afraid of the cold, so he would probably suffer from acclimatization problems.

Somewhat distracted, Ha Yue muttered to herself out of guilt, "The people from the Cultural Bureau just said you're here on a business trip? Which hotel are you staying at? I'll take you directly to the door. It's windy today, and it'll probably take a long time to get a taxi. Your bronchus isn't very good either, so it's best not to talk too much. Just sit quietly in the car."

Xue Jing released his hand from his mouth, and immediately felt a thick, warm sensation on his leg.

It was the windproof device that had been covering Ha Yue's legs.

The not-so-clean nylon fabric stained his coat with a wisp of dust. Xue Jing looked down at the small blanket covering his knees, his expression softening slightly. After about thirty seconds, he said in a low voice, "The intersection of Xing'an Street and Mulan Street."

Less than half an hour later, Ha Yue stopped downstairs at the only chain hotel in Suicheng.

As soon as the tricycle came to a stop, she jumped out of the driver's seat and reached for Xue Jing's luggage.

Standing amidst the vibrant neon lights, Xue Jingli instinctively reached out to grab it, saying, "It's too heavy, you can't lift it..."

The no-name bubble tea shop next to the hotel was playing "Love for Sale" on its loudspeaker. His words were drowned out by the catchy tune. Before he could finish speaking, Ha Yue had already easily and steadily placed his large suitcase from the back of the electric scooter next to him, and looked up at him apologetically, saying loudly, "Sorry, I was driving too fast. Pig seems to be a little carsick and threw up on your suitcase. Let me wipe it for you."

She turned around, opened the car seat, and rummaged through it for a rag to help wipe things down. In the end, she only found a pack of dried-out generic wet wipes.

"No need to trouble yourself. I'll go up and clean it myself." Xue Jing reached out to stop her from bending over. Their arms touched lightly under the fabric before quickly bouncing apart, like magnets of the same polarity.

"Goodbye." Xue Jing reached out and held the handle of her suitcase, smiled and nodded at her, as if he wanted to see her off.

Ha Yue never expected that after so many years apart, Xue Jing would still be a gentleman when they met again, showing basic respect for women, even if it was just an act.

Xue Jing is a flawless person, and most importantly, Ha Yue knows that he is inherently good.

In this world, some people resent the rich, some people hate evil, and everyone has different judgments and preferences about different types of people, but no one will ever truly hate a kind person.

Because kindness represents absolute altruism, being close to kind people is equivalent to liking yourself. If you had a choice, who would want to hate themselves?

Ha Yue chuckled and waved at Xue Jing, then quickly got on the tricycle. As she reversed, her body was level with his again. Their eyes met, and Ha Yue suddenly couldn't suppress the urge to ask, "Xue Jing, how long will you stay in Suicheng?"

Ah, he's no longer calling me "teacher." Should he be thankful that Ha Yue still remembers his full name and hasn't mispronounced it?

Xue Jing tightened his grip on the suitcase for a moment, then released it. This time, he maintained a steady pace of speech, neither too fast nor too slow, "If all goes well, about a week. The activities won't be too extensive; I'll basically be eating and staying at the hotel. Is there anything I can do for you?"

"Oh," Ha Yue's gaze slid down Xue Jing's arm again, until it touched his left wrist and then drifted away. "Then if you have time, I'll treat you to a meal."

It has nothing to do with romance; it's simply a matter of human beings apologies for past recklessness.
