Chapter 27 Visiting Second Uncle
Seeing that Meng Xi's expression had softened slightly, her second aunt was afraid that if she really annoyed her, then her little schemes would be useless.
Just then, Meng Xi and the shop manager's noodles were served, so a smile spread across his dark face as he said, "Xi Xi, have you paid for this meal? Your second aunt will settle it for you."
Meng Xi took out a pair of chopsticks, nodded politely, and said softly, "No need, I've already given them to you."
After she finished speaking, she lowered her head and ate her food, not wanting to see her and Meng Jinwei anymore.
She had barely started eating when her phone rang. She picked it up and saw it was a WeChat call from Lu Yu.
She answered the phone and held it to her ear: "Hello? Lu Yu."
The background noise from Lu Yu on the other end was very loud, suggesting it was in a crowded and noisy place.
Didn't he just wake up? How come he's here so quickly?
"I didn't see you in the store. Where are you now?" Lu Yu's voice was cold and devoid of warmth, as was his usual tone.
Meng Xi glanced up at her second aunt and sighed inwardly: "It's in the Shifang Restaurant in the alley behind the shop."
"I'll be right there."
She put down her chopsticks and went to wait at the door. A short while later, she saw him appear at the street corner.
The midday sun was blazing, and Meng Xi stood in the unshaded doorway, the sunlight directly scorching her fair face.
Amidst the bustling crowd, her fair complexion and delicate, beautiful features made her stand out.
Lu Yu's eyes darkened, and he stepped forward, placing the hat he was holding on her head: "Didn't you even know to use an umbrella?"
He glanced indifferently at the noodle shop, his brow furrowing slightly: "You eat here?"
In Lu Yu's mind, there was never any concept of eating in such a place.
The place was crowded, dirty, and the aroma of food mixed with the smells of sweat and cheap perfume from different people, creating an indescribable odor that made him feel disgusted and irritated.
If Meng Xi hadn't been there, he wouldn't have been so disdainful.
But Meng Xi was like a clear, snow-white lake in his heart; he couldn't bear to see her suffer the slightest grievance, nor could he bear to see her compromise herself.
In Lu Yu's eyes, Meng Xi deserves all the best things in the world.
Meng Xi didn't notice Lu Yu's disdain, and just smiled and said, "The noodles here are delicious. I came here with Si Yu before."
She looked up at Lu Yu: "Did you have lunch? Would you like to try some?"
Lu Yu froze, looked around at the interior, and asked, "Do you often eat in places like this?"
Upon hearing "this kind of place," Meng Xi suddenly realized what Lu Yu meant.
As for Meng Xi, she could enjoy the delicacies of the Lu family, and she was also used to street food when she lived on her own.
But Lu Yu has been pampered since childhood. He is used to being high above others, and his food, clothing, housing and transportation are all the best. How could he possibly get used to eating these things?
She lowered her head, her voice trembling with unease: "I forgot you don't eat these..."
Before she could finish speaking, Lu Yu, who couldn't stand seeing her even slightly unhappy, immediately pulled her inside, saying, "Let's eat."
It's just a small restaurant, what's so difficult about it?
As Lu Yu pulled Meng Xi back to her previous seat, the lively conversation in the noodle shop gradually subsided as more and more eyes were drawn to the young couple.
Many people were looking this way, and some young girls even glanced over with blushes.
Lu Yu has a cold demeanor and a sharp, handsome appearance. He seems aloof and unapproachable, rarely smiling. His deep, dark eyes seem to carry a hint of aggression.
He was well aware that many people were watching him, and this kind of place made Lu Yu very uncomfortable.
The sounds of conversation, varying in pitch and volume, deep and sharp, were irritating to the ear.
Meng Xi subtly nudged his hand under the table and whispered, "I almost forgot about your temper tantrum. Is this environment okay? Is there a possibility of a relapse?"
The unintentional touch sent a slight shiver through Lu Yu's body, as if it had loosened the tension in his mind, making even the most unbearable things seem to become...
It seemed like it was somewhat bearable.
Lu Yu's expression remained unchanged, a barely perceptible smile playing on his lips. He grasped her left hand under the table and said calmly, "You eat first. I have something to do later, so we'll eat out."
Meng Xi breathed a sigh of relief, looked up at the shop manager, her second aunt, and Meng Jinwei across the table, and whispered, "This is Lu Yu, my... friend."
After she finished speaking, she introduced to Lu Yu: "Second Aunt, Meng Jinwei, and the manager of the milk tea shop where I work."
friend?
Lu Yu tightened his grip on Meng Xi's fingers, and Meng Xi glanced at him, clearly seeing the heaviness in his eyes.
He doesn't lash out in front of outsiders.
Lu Yu knew that Meng Xi had relatives. Although they hadn't interacted before, he could occasionally glean from snippets of conversation between Meng Xi and Uncle Gu that these relatives didn't seem to be anyone who made her happy.
The shop manager looked at the two with interest and said knowingly, "Ah, friends?"
"Welcome to the store, my friend. It should help boost the business."
Lu Yu remained calm, showing no awareness of bothering others, and said rather condescendingly, "Yes."
Meng Jinwei, who was sitting opposite Lu Yu and Meng Xi, stared wide-eyed at Lu Yu. She could tell at a glance that Lu Yu's entire outfit was extraordinary. Although it was understated, each piece was very valuable. Even the exquisite white hat that was on Meng Xi's head had a logo on the edge that could not be ignored.
It's a new model from V brand. She just saw it last night; it costs over 20,000.
She wasn't good at studying, so she started getting into makeup and dressing up at a young age and has some knowledge of luxury brands.
I only knew that Meng Xi lived in a wealthy family's house, but I never imagined that she was actually this rich.
Seeing Meng Xi's hat and Lu Yu's growing envy, Meng Jinwei couldn't help but ask, "Meng Xi, is this the son of your host family's owner?"
Meng Xi was taken aback, a bad feeling rising in her heart, as if she were being stared at by a venomous snake. She nodded with difficulty: "Yes."
Perhaps it was because Meng Jinwei's expression was too fervent and blatant that Lu Yu disliked being stared at like that, and his expression turned somewhat cold.
The five people sat together at a table. Lu Yu was already very tall, so he stood out the most. When he looked at people, he lowered his eyes slightly, which seemed to outsiders like he was scrutinizing them.
He gave Meng Jinwei a cold look: "Stop your little schemes."
When exposed in public, Meng Jinwei immediately looked away in embarrassment.
The second aunt looked at Lu Yu, then at Meng Xi, and immediately smiled slickly: "Our Xi Xi is so lucky to have you all living here. Come over for dinner sometime. I'll cook whatever you like, okay?"
Lu Yu ignored her completely, his face fierce and arrogant, but he was intently pinching Meng Xi's fingers.
Her fingers were slightly cool, thin, soft, and small.
I can never get enough of touching it.
Meng Xi shyly pulled away a little, but he pressed her down and pulled her back. After a few rounds, she stopped moving and obediently let him pinch her.
Seeing that neither of them spoke, the second aunt awkwardly shut her mouth.
Meng Xi was finally able to finish her meal in peace.
After an eerie ten minutes, Meng Xi put down her chopsticks, looked at her second aunt who was still eating, thought for a moment, and finally said, "Second Aunt, I'll go see Second Uncle after I get off work this afternoon. I have to go to work later, so I'll be leaving now."
After she finished speaking, she gestured to the shop manager and walked out of the noodle shop with Lu Yu.
"Going to your second aunt's house after get off work this afternoon?" Lu Yu and Meng Xi stood in a relatively secluded corner. Lu Yu leaned against the wall behind him, looking down at her. "When are you coming back?"
Meng Xi hesitated for a moment: "I don't know about Second Uncle's situation yet. If all goes well, I'll be back soon."
"You don't want me to go with you?"
Her relationship with her second uncle and aunt's family was not good at all.
Who knows what might happen tonight, if it's going to be ugly.
She didn't want Lu Yu to see that.
She nodded, which was taken as agreement. "You should go find somewhere to eat. I'm going back to the bubble tea shop."
Lu Yu tapped Meng Xi's hat on the head with displeasure: "Your lunch break is so short? It's over in a flash?"
He bent down and got close to Meng Xi's face. "I drove all this way here, won't you stay with me for a while?"
After saying that, Lu Yu curled his lips into an ambiguous smile: "I'm not—your friend?"
Meng Xi's face flushed instantly. She took a step back, too embarrassed to look at him. "It's my first day at work, so I have to be proactive. Besides... we... aren't even..."
As expected, Lu Yu was not going to let this go!
"What else is it?"
Lu Yu reached out and grabbed Meng Xi's waist, preventing her from retreating. From a distance, it looked like a tall boy bending down to hug a girl in his arms.
His tone was ambiguous: "What's so hard to say?"
"We're not boyfriend and girlfriend yet, so this is the only way I can introduce you for now." Meng Xi lowered her head, refusing to look at him, forcing Lu Yu out of his romantic reverie. "Lu Yu, wake up, you should go eat."
The afternoon passed quickly, and the two newcomers, Meng Xi and Song Siyu, had basically gotten the hang of things and soon got down to business.
Because they are both young and working summer jobs, they only need to work the day shift, which is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
After six o'clock, Meng Xi politely declined her colleagues' invitation to eat hot pot and went to a fruit shop alone to buy some fruit. After thinking about it, she also bought some supplements that she could afford at her age.
I took a car to my second aunt's apartment complex, carried my things upstairs, and knocked on the door.
"Knock knock knock".
Meng Jinwei opened the door.
When she saw Meng Xi arrive, she glanced at him disdainfully and called out into the house, "Dad—Mom—Meng Xi is here."
After saying that, she turned around and went into the house, wearing slippers, and sat cross-legged on the sofa to eat watermelon.
Meng Xi hadn't been to her second uncle and aunt's house for a long time, but for some reason, she felt inexplicably uncomfortable as soon as she entered today.
She greeted him, put down her purchases, and first sent Lu Yu her location via her phone.
Before I could even type, my second aunt wiped her hands on her apron and poked her head out of the kitchen to greet me, "Xi Xi is here? Why are you being so polite? You even brought so much stuff. Come on, sit down. Weiwei will cut a watermelon for your sister."
Meng Jinwei remained motionless as she scooped out watermelon, muttering, "It's not like she doesn't have hands..."
Meng Xi said gently, "It's okay, I won't eat it."
She turned her head and asked, "Where's my second uncle?"
"There she is, lying inside." Meng Jinwei casually pointed in a direction with her chin.
Meng Xi stood up and walked into the house.
As soon as I opened the door, I saw my second uncle lying on the bed with his eyes closed, his body wrapped in many bandages. The room was hot and dimly lit, and the lights were not even on.
It forms a stark contrast with the living room and kitchen.
