Spicy daughter-in-law and wicked mother-in-law, causing a scene
Lin Shaocheng narrowed his eyes, seemingly unable to believe what he had just heard. "You said you still want to live in the villa."
Li Guorong nodded and asked, "Are you on my side or your mother's?"
Lin Shaocheng finally realized that his wife was a very courageous person. He was almost amused by Li Guorong's courage. "If you go back, can you fight them? I always have to go to work. Sometimes I drive for half a month. What if they scheme against you again?"
Thinking about this, Li Guorong felt uneasy. City people, especially the Lin family, were more cunning than a sieve. But she was unwilling to give up the villa.
Seeing that Li Guorong's expression softened, Lin Shaocheng couldn't help but persuade him, "I've already asked my old brothers, and the policy will be relaxed in a few years. Then we can buy a big courtyard house and grow vegetables in it."
Hearing this, Li Guorong couldn't help but yearn for it. A courtyard house in Beijing—how much money would that cost in the future? "Okay, but I still need to go back to the Lin family. You're not allowed to help your mother."
Lin Shaocheng said helplessly, "She's still my mother, so let's just ignore her, okay?"
Li Guorong was filled with anger and felt very wronged. His eyes immediately reddened, and he shouted, "She framed me and sent me to the detention center. I didn't eat or sleep well, and I even had to fight with others. Is this all she's going to do?"
Lin Shaocheng was at a loss. This is a universal dilemma for Chinese men: on one side is his mother, and on the other is his wife. Neither of them is easy to get along with, and he was caught in the middle, torn between them. He said, "Do whatever you want."
Li Guorong then stopped crying and got on his bicycle.
The sound of footsteps climbing the stairs broke the tranquility of the small villa. The Lin family had been the source of gossip for the past month. The residents of the machinery factory downstairs remained quiet, ready to listen to the gossip upstairs.
Li Guorong kicked open the door and shouted, "Grandma, I'm back!"
Lin's mother looked like she'd seen a ghost. Given her relationship with Li Guorong, she thought they would never see each other again. She never expected this young lady to come to her door. Lin's mother sat upright on the sofa, acting like a wealthy lady.
"Grandma, where did you put my clothes and ID?"
Lin's mother touched her temple, "Don't talk nonsense. With your junk, even if you gave it to the homeless under the overpass, no one would want it."
"Oh my goodness, my mother-in-law actually recognizes me! The other day when the police came to the door, she said I was mentally ill and didn't recognize me."
No one was there to support Lin's mother today; the men had all gone to work. Lin Shaocheng didn't come inside but waited at the door, so Lin's mother couldn't muster any strength.
Li Guorong rushed into Lin's mother's room. Lin's mother tried to stop him like a goose spreading its wings, but Li Guorong pushed her to the ground. Lin's mother clutched her waist and cried out in pain.
Li Guorong opened the wardrobe, which was full of Lin's mother's clothes. She pulled them out and threw them on the ground.
Lin's mother exclaimed, "These are all made of silk, they can't withstand scratches, unlike your tattered clothes."
Li Guorong stomped hard on it. Lin's mother's clothes were fine, while hers were tattered. He rummaged through the clothes again until he finally found hers. There were only a few plain-colored pieces. She shouted, "Where are my clothes? Where did you put them?"
Lin's mother's face showed alternating expressions of heartache and pride. "I didn't see it."
Li Guorong touched the wool coat that belonged to Lin's mother in the closet. She hadn't worn the coat many times. She didn't know if Lin's mother had thrown it away or given it to someone else. Not wanting to make things easy for Lin's mother, she picked up the bag next to her and stuffed Lin's mother's coat into it.
Lin's mother's expression changed. Her coat was 100% cashmere. She rushed forward and pounced, "This is robbery! I'm calling the police!"
Li Guorong struck Lin's mother in the stomach with his elbow, causing her to cry out in pain.
Li Guorong said, "I'll give you back my clothes when you return them to me. Even if you take it to the police, it's just a family matter for a mother-in-law to give her daughter-in-law some clothes."
Over the years, Lin's mother had been pampered and spoiled, so she was no match for Li Guorong. She could only watch helplessly as Li Guorong took away her expensive silk shirts and wool and cashmere coats, all of which Lin Shaocheng had bought for her while traveling all over the country.
Li Guorong walked to the dressing table and saw several familiar bottles. They were skincare and cosmetic products that Lin Shaocheng had bought for her. She dumped them all into a bag and scolded, "Mother-in-law, you used to be a teacher, how could you steal my things?"
Lin's mother would never admit it. In her heart, all of these things belonged to her. Ever since Lin Shaocheng married this shrew, he has stopped bringing any good things home. The expensive cosmetics and clothes he used to bring her have now become this woman's. The money that should have been given to her has also ended up in this woman's hands. How could she not hate her?
Lin's mother's voice was so loud it could pierce eardrums. She shouted, "Lin Shaocheng, you unfilial son! How dare you let your wife bully your old mother like this? Are you trying to force me to my death and kill your grandparents?"
Lin Shaocheng took heavy steps. His mother's bedroom was a mess. He looked up, his heart filled with mixed emotions. This was the second time he had seen his mother in such a disheveled state. "Alright, we still have to pack up the goods. Let's go."
Li Guorong walked ahead with a large bag of clothes on his back, looking very proud. Lin Shaocheng followed behind with a helpless expression. When they reached the door, Lin Shaocheng couldn't help but say, "Mom, you live the life that comes with your abilities. You've never been a pampered young lady, and the family's money isn't something that anyone who spends more can benefit from."
Lin's mother was stunned, and she stared at Lin Shaocheng's disappearing figure for a long time.
Snow fell on the city walls of Beijing, and children ran around with snot bubbles in their noses. Li Guorong and Lin Shaocheng did not go back to the staff dormitory in the end. Instead, they tidied up the rented warehouse and lived there.
The fire on the stove was very strong. The two men were wearing thick cotton-padded clothes. Lin Shaocheng was sitting around the stove looking at a book that Li Guorong couldn't understand.
Li Guorong couldn't stand the silence and couldn't help but say, "When are you going to the south to pick up some cotton-padded clothes and down jackets?"
Lin Shaocheng was completely absorbed in the ocean of knowledge and did not hear Li Guorong's words.
Li Guorong pulled a roasted sweet potato from the fire, blew on it to warm it, and placed it in front of Lin Shaocheng.
Lin Shaocheng's view was blocked, so he picked up the sweet potato and asked, "What's wrong?"
Li Guorong rested his chin on his hands and said, "What are you looking at? It's so boring. You won't even talk to me."
Lin Shaocheng is preparing for next year's college entrance examination, so he could only patiently answer, "I'm preparing for next year's college entrance examination. Do you want to study together?"
Li Guorong shook her head. She got a headache just looking at those foreign words. She looked at Lin Shaocheng expectantly and asked, "When are you going to get the goods to sell?"
Lin Shaocheng shook his head helplessly, "We don't drive in winter."
Li Guorong stood up and paced back and forth in the room, as if he had thorns in his buttocks and couldn't stay still for a moment. "But it's so boring. Will you watch a movie with me? And are we just going to sit here and do nothing but eat our savings?"
Li Guorong is like some students who are unwilling to learn themselves and also prevent others from learning properly.
Lin Shaocheng sighed, "I'll still be driving in the spring. If I get into university, I'll be able to find a better class."
Li Guorong always had endless energy. Lin Shaocheng had a class, but that was four years later. She didn't have a class and spent her days at home gossiping with others. Wouldn't that be incredibly boring? Glancing at the comic books on the table, they weren't as exciting as the mobile phones of later generations.
Lin Shaocheng was engrossed in his book again, but Li Guorong was like a flea on his body, constantly bothering Lin Shaocheng and shaking his arm, saying, "So boring, so boring."
Lin Shaocheng glanced at his watch. "It's my turn to watch the warehouse today. You can go see a movie or go shopping."
Li Guorong was angry as he watched Lin Shaocheng's figure disappear into the snow. Where can you go without money? Now he's just sitting around living off his savings. How is he going to afford a courtyard house?
The neighbor on the left pushed his bicycle back. Li Guorong glanced at him and saw it was the man who sold donkey rolls. "Brother, so early today?"
The man selling donkey rolls chuckled and said, "The snow was too heavy today, and I couldn't walk any further after reaching halfway."
Li Guorong went inside, worried about Lin Shaocheng. Would Lin Shaocheng be able to come back soon in this heavy snow? It was so cold in this weather.
Holding a hard-boiled egg in her hand, she couldn't help but sigh. Everything in Beijing costs money, but making money is difficult. Suddenly, her eyes lit up. How could she have forgotten about selling food?
What should we sell? Ice jelly? Nobody eats that in the dead of winter. How about something hot, like Chongchuan noodles? One person can't manage it all. Lin Shaocheng is studying and sometimes has to drive a car.
She took a bite of the egg. She could make Sichuan-style boiled chicken and fried potatoes. She stood up, wanting to tell Lin Shaocheng, but the house was empty and no one was home. Suddenly, she lost her spirits.
The snow outside was falling heavier and heavier. Li Guorong wanted to go to the farmers' market to ask about potato prices and find suitable ingredients, but there was nothing he could do now.
On the other side, Lin Shaocheng was reading in his dormitory. The dormitory was heated and warmer than the rented house. Li Guorong had always complained that it was too small and didn't want to come. He was originally watching from the warehouse entrance, but as the snow got heavier, the leader told him to go back and just take stock of the inventory that night.
Standing at the door of Lin Shaocheng's dormitory, Li Jiaoniang's eyes flashed with a sharp light as she recalled Teacher Lin's words. She knocked on the door and asked, "Brother Lin, are you in there?"
On a snowy day, Li Jiaoniang wore only a light pink sweater on top and a skirt with thermal underwear on the bottom, showing no sign of feeling cold.
Lin Shaocheng was so engrossed in his book that he didn't hear the knocking. He was carefully marking the parts he didn't quite understand, and he could only ask his former classmates about them.
Li Jiaoniang knocked on the door again, "Brother Lin, I have a few questions to ask you."
There was still no response from inside. Li Jiaoniang wondered if the man had gone home while she was changing clothes. She hugged her arms and hurried home; it was freezing!
The sky was dark and gloomy. Lin Shaocheng, carrying books, finished counting the goods in the warehouse and was about to go home when he accidentally bumped into someone at the street corner. He quickly helped the person up. The woman was wearing glasses and looked to be around 20 years old.
Lin Shaocheng asked in surprise, "Wan Yin?"
The woman picked up the book from the ground; it was a physics book, probably written by a student preparing for college entrance exams. Wiping the fog from her glasses, she exclaimed in surprise, "Shaocheng, you're going to take the college entrance exams?"
