Chapter 76 An Irresistible Dog
Before Grandpa Huang could finish speaking, Yun Zhaozhao said urgently, "Grandpa, this dog is mine."
Grandpa Huang was speechless. He wasn't deaf; he had heard everything they said clearly. Now, Yun Zhaozhao was his only remaining relative. Not wanting to embarrass his granddaughter, he went along with her and said, "Yes, she is our Zhaozhao's."
Even if it isn't true, it must be. It's just that Pei Xiaobao is here, and Pei Jiuyan will probably ask for it again.
Grandpa Huang had an idea and said, "Let's invite your brother Shangluo over for a meal tomorrow. I've been too busy since I came back and haven't had time to see him alone yet."
"OK."
Yun Zhaozhao readily agreed and immediately called Fu Shangluo. Fu Shangluo arrived early the next morning. He also prepared a gift for Old Master Huang: a jade bracelet he had personally carved and a complete set of the Four Treasures of the Study, all of which were Old Master Huang's favorites.
Fu Shangluo has always been the most satisfactory choice for his granddaughter's husband in Old Master Fu's heart, and still is.
After the two finished their meal, Yun Zhaozhao was so sleepy that Grandpa Huang sent her to bed, while he pulled Fu Shangluo aside to play Go.
"It's been many years since I played chess with you. Let me see if you've improved."
"Grandpa Huang, I won't hold back."
"Young man, beat me first."
Grandpa Huang placed a piece on the board and began the conversation: "I heard from your grandfather that you don't have anyone by your side right now."
As early as when he received Yun Zhaozhao's call informing him that Grandpa Huang had invited him to dinner, Fu Shangluo had already guessed it. Upon hearing this, he calmly replied, "Because I can't let go."
Grandpa Huang was surprised by his frankness and then said, "But Zhao Zhao has been married once, and she is now pregnant with someone else's child."
"Grandpa Huang, I don't care about these things. Zhao Zhao's child is my child too."
As Fu Shangluo spoke, he placed a piece on the board.
“I’ve watched you grow up since you were little, I know your personality very well, I know you don’t mind, but…”
As Old Master Huang spoke, he frowned. The Fu family was of high social standing. When the Yun family was still around, they could barely be considered a good match, a political and business alliance. But now that the Yun family was gone, and there was that evil spirit Pei Jiuyan watching over them.
Knowing Old Master Huang's concerns, Fu Shangluo immediately said, "My grandfather also likes Zhaozhao very much."
He didn't mention his parents' attitude. This time when he came back, he got very close to Yun Zhaozhao. His father and mother had both advised him to stay away from Yun Zhaozhao, but he didn't agree.
He knew he couldn't hide these things from Grandpa Huang, so he simply said, "Grandpa Huang, don't worry, I won't let Zhaozhao suffer any injustice."
Grandpa Huang didn't say anything, but simply blocked Fu Shangluo's path with a white chess piece.
He was still too hasty. Zhao Zhao's previous marriage had already left her scarred, and this time he had to carefully select a partner for her. Social standing and such were unimportant; what mattered was that he genuinely cared for Zhao Zhao.
If Pei Jiuyan weren't watching her like a hawk, finding someone from a less prestigious family wouldn't be a bad idea. With him there to keep an eye on things, she wouldn't have to worry about anyone bullying Zhaozhao.
But Pei Jiuyan wouldn't let go; besides the Fu family, he couldn't think of anyone else with such power.
Seeing that Grandpa Huang was no longer speaking, Fu Shangluo changed the subject, saying that he would prove with his actions that he could do it and that he could give Yun Zhaozhao happiness.
When Yun Zhaozhao came down, the two had just finished a game of chess.
"So? Who won?"
"A draw."
Fu Shangluo said with a smile.
Grandpa Huang glanced at Fu Shangluo but didn't correct him. He admitted he had actually lost the game; Fu Shangluo had let him win. In the years since they last met, Fu Shangluo's chess skills had improved dramatically, and he had even become more cunning.
Therefore, he would have to take another look.
Fu Shangluo didn't stay for dinner. Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, and there are many relatives and friends on the Fu family's side who need to be visited. He made time to come over today.
"Don't bother seeing me off, it's cold outside, I'll walk myself."
As Fu Shangluo spoke, he raised his hand to touch Yun Zhaozhao's head, but to everyone's surprise, Pei Xiaobao, who was lying in Yun Zhaozhao's arms, suddenly jumped up and bit Fu Shangluo's hand.
"Pei Xiaobao!"
Yun Zhaozhao didn't know what was wrong with Pei Xiaobao, so she quickly scolded him. Although Pei Xiaobao let go of Fu Shangluo, he bared his teeth at Fu Shangluo and looked fierce, not at all like his usual well-behaved self.
Yun Zhaozhao no longer cared why Pei Xiaobao was suddenly like this. She quickly looked at Fu Shangluo's hand and saw clear teeth marks on his wrist, with some areas already broken and bleeding.
"No, you need to get vaccinated first."
"I'll go to the hospital with you."
Without saying a word, Yun Zhaozhao put on her coat and went out with Fu Shangluo. Before leaving, she glared fiercely at Pei Xiaobao.
Pei Xiaobao is no longer as fierce as before; his ears have become like airplane ears, making him look cute and pitiful.
At the hospital, Yun Zhaozhao accompanied Fu Shangluo to get his vaccine, looking apologetic: "I'm sorry, Brother Shangluo. Pei Xiaobao is usually very well-behaved. I don't know what's wrong with him today."
"...It's okay, it's not your fault."
Fu Shangluo comforted him, but sighed inwardly. No wonder it was Pei Jiuyan's dog. Just like people, dogs seem harmless, but you can get bitten if you're not careful.
Seeing Yun Zhaozhao frowning, he comforted her, "It really doesn't hurt. Don't feel guilty. It's just a few injections. This is much better than when you tricked me before and made me take the blame and get beaten by Grandpa."
He tried to lighten the mood, but Yun Zhaozhao couldn't feel happy.
Back home, I asked my grandfather about the situation, looked around, and asked, "Grandpa, where's Pei Xiaobao?"
"In its kennel."
“It’s been there ever since you left.”
As he spoke, Grandpa glanced at Yun Zhaozhao and said meaningfully, "Zhaozhao, a dog only recognizes one master. Some dogs can never be tamed no matter what you do."
"……I see."
After Yun Zhaozhao finished talking with her grandfather, she went to the doghouse. Pei Xiaobao seemed to know that Yun Zhaozhao was angry. He didn't dare to come out when he heard her voice. He only dared to hide in the doghouse and watch her cautiously. His big eyes blinked and he looked aggrieved. Anyone who didn't know better would think that someone had wronged him.
After watching for a while, Yun Zhaozhao called over a servant to pack up Pei Xiaobao's things.
Seeing that his dog toys and food had been packed away, Pei Xiaobao let out a low whimper, as if admitting his mistake or pleading for mercy, but Yun Zhao didn't even glance at him.
She dialed Pei Jiuyan's number, ignoring the joyful voice on the other end, and said coldly:
"Pei Jiuyan, take your dog away."
