Chapter 50
The wedding photos alone took two days to shoot, causing Ji Mingfei's medical check-up plan to be postponed again and again.
After finally seeing a doctor and ruling out the possibility of pregnancy, the doctor suggested that she go for a psychiatric checkup.
They then went to the psychiatry department. The doctor, holding Ji Mingfei's examination report and looking at the EEG, said, "The preliminary diagnosis is mild anxiety disorder. Have you been troubled by something lately?"
“No…!” Ji Mingfei shook his head, puzzled.
Going to work, coming home, eating, sleeping, taking care of the kids—everything is the same as always.
Standing behind Ji Mingfei, Chu Yue placed her hands on her shoulders and told the doctor, "We're getting married soon, could this be the reason?"
"..."
Ji Mingfei looked up at her. What did this have to do with anxiety? Would anyone experience anxiety about getting married? She's already had a child!
The doctor deduced, "If there are no other pressures, this is likely a trigger. Your avoidance of intimacy and symptoms of insensitivity to alpha hormones suggest that you are somewhat averse to your alpha. However, your normal life hasn't been affected, so it's very likely premarital anxiety."
Ji Mingfei couldn't accept this conclusion, arguing, "Although we haven't had a wedding, we've lived together for over three years, how could I possibly have pre-wedding anxiety?"
“Living together and getting married are two completely different psychological states. Some people can accept dating or even cohabitation, but they are very resistant to marriage. Although there is no difference in form, for those who do not trust marriage, cohabitation can be ended at any time, while marriage is a permanent bond.”
After leaving the hospital, Chu Yue suggested going out for some time alone with Ji Mingfei to cheer him up, but she was in a hurry to go home to see the children.
The avoidance behavior the doctor mentioned reappeared.
Realizing this, Ji Mingfei immediately changed his mind and asked, "Where do you want to go?"
Chu Yue sighed, "Let's go home."
In the quiet car, Chu Yue hesitated for a long time before finally speaking, "We can postpone the wedding. I thought you needed that sense of ceremony, which is why I rushed to finalize things. It's okay if we don't have a wedding..."
Ji Mingfei fell silent.
…
A wedding ceremony with a full house of guests.
A newlywed couple walked hand in hand across the glamorous stage, while the flower girl carried a flower basket, scattering petals like an emotionless flower-scattering machine.
"What adorable flower girls!"
Whose child is this?
"Can't you tell? She's a spitting image of her mother."
The staff on both sides of the stage stared at the little girl's face for a long time, and a cold face slowly emerged in their minds.
Director Chu.
The lively group of employees fell silent for a second.
"When did Mr. Chu have a child?"
"President Chu's omega isn't President Shen?"
"Have you forgotten whose wedding we're attending today?"
Following the procedure she had practiced many times, in June she led the newcomer to the center of the stage, took out a ring box from a small flower basket, and handed it to Qin Zhou on tiptoe.
The emcee's cheerful commentary ignited the entire venue, and Little June quietly left, walking down the steps to the side.
Deng Jie, who was waiting below the stage, took June's hand and led her through the crowd, leaving the wedding venue.
A stylish convertible pulled up at the hotel entrance. The car was filled with wedding gowns, but the belatedly arriving couple showed no intention of entering the hotel. Instead, a little girl ran out of the hotel lobby.
"Mommy! Mommy!"
Chu Yue opened the car door, picked up June who ran towards her, and put her in the car. She waved to Deng Jie, who had just walked out of the hotel, and said with a smile, "Thanks! Say hello to your sister and President Shen for me!"
Sitting on Ji Mingfei's lap in June, she called out in a soft, sweet voice, "Goodbye, Uncle Deng!"
Deng Jie waved his hands, watching the family of three leave.
The car drove north out of the city, heading straight for Ji Mingfei's hometown, Fengchuan.
Ji Mingfei hadn't visited for three years, and the cemetery remained as deserted as ever. She lifted her skirt with one hand and carried offerings in the other, walking along the straight path with mixed emotions. Behind her, Chu Yue followed closely, holding the child.
"Mommy, where are we going?" June asked, hugging Chu Yue's neck.
Chu Yue told her, "Let's go see Grandma."
June craned her neck to look around, "Does Grandma live here? Why isn't there a house here?!"
Chu Yue pointed to each tombstone and tried her best to explain to the child, "This is where the deceased live. They are under each of those tombstones. We can't see Grandma, but we can tell her what we want to say."
At June's age, she couldn't possibly understand these things, but Chu Yue didn't want to use more complicated words to beautify death, because she would understand what it was one day.
The tombstone was covered with a thick layer of dust.
Ji Mingfei wiped it clean little by little with a cloth.
Chu Yue laid out the offerings, and Liu Yue helped her like a little adult. After lighting the incense, the three of them sat around the tombstone as if on a picnic.
"Mom, I said I'd bring the kids to see you last time, but the plans have changed. There's one more." Ji Mingfei smiled unconsciously as she looked at Chu Yue.
Chu Yue, leaning against the tombstone, introduced herself in a very familiar manner. From her birth date and time to her family background, she reported everything she could remember to her mother-in-law.
After listening to her mother's self-introduction, June imitated Chu Yue and said, "Grandma, my name is Ji Liuyue, and I'm three years old. I'm Mommy and Mommy's child. I'll be going to kindergarten next year. My favorite foods are milk and bananas, and I don't like eggplant..."
*
Three days ago, after discussing it with Ji Mingfei, Chu Yue made the last-minute decision to cancel the wedding. They didn't need to make a big show of how much they loved each other; they only needed their closest family to know that they were deeply in love.
This unique wedding photo, or rather, a family portrait of the three of them, in front of the tombstone has always been displayed in the living room window.
Whenever someone curiously asks about the origin of this photo, Chu Yue and Ji Mingfei always exchange a smile.
There may be many kinds of weddings in the world, and their choice may be incomprehensible to others, but they believe that this is the best wedding they can have.
For the next three years, or even thirty years, they will continue to walk hand in hand.
Until their hair turns white and their teeth fall out.
…
If time could turn back, Ji Mingfei would have said to Chu Yue from the very beginning, "I think your genes are good. Can you be the mother of my child?"
Chu Yue might hesitate for a moment, then reply, "I can give it a try."
