Daily life at the college (I)

Daily life at the college (I)

On the ring, Rinyin lowered her head and wrapped the bandage around her again.

The discussion in the audience suddenly became louder. She looked up and saw Damian von Horn slowly walking onto the stage.

His right arm was covered in black biological armor, and the shoulder armor vaguely resembled a three-headed dog. It was the armored form of the Horn family's mysterious beast, the "Hellhound."

"How pitiful." Damian twisted his wrist. "Someone who can't contract a mythical beast is recruited as a treasure. The fighting department is really a garbage collection center."

Linyin's eyelashes cast a shadow on her face like butterfly wings. She remembered this voice. Last fall, in the alley next to the college, this voice made a common girl take off her skirt, so she, who was passing by, pressed the owner of the voice into the wall.

The audience suddenly fell silent.

The girl's figure disappeared from where she was.

Damian's pupils shrank as he heard the sound of air being torn apart, and he instinctively raised his right arm to protect his chest. However, Rin Yin suddenly changed direction in mid-air, and the sole of her boot struck him hard on the nose.

The three-headed dog wailed, and the phantom beast armor was almost unable to maintain its form.

"Eight hundred kilograms of instantaneous explosive force!" the commentator's voice trembled. "As expected of a 3S student in the Combat Department! This is approaching the physical strength of a Xuan-level growth-stage phantom beast!"

Damian stumbled back, blood spurting from his nose.

He wiped his face and suddenly grinned. A black blade flashed in his right hand: "Hell Blade!"

Three crescent-shaped black blades pierced the air. Linyin flipped over and leaped up, the black blades narrowly glancing at the ends of her hair, then strangely turned back in mid-air.

Exclamations echoed from the stands. This spinning blade move was one of Cerberus's more famous and troublesome mythical beast abilities. The blade flew silently, at a tricky angle, making it easy for those uninitiated to fall prey to a surprise attack.

Linyin suddenly reached out and grabbed the two black blades attacking from behind. The bandage was instantly soaked with blood. Then she took advantage of the momentum and jumped into the air, kicking away the remaining one.

"Are you crazy? Taking on a phantom beast's attack with your bare hands?"

"I heard her mental stability index was only 40 during the entrance exam..."

"Oh my god, no wonder he's so crazy."

The buzz of discussion was once again interrupted by a huge movement on the stage. Damian was struck in the chest by a knee, and spiderweb-like cracks appeared on his phantom armor. He retreated to the edge of the ring, fear finally showing in his eyes.

Linyin didn't give him a chance to admit defeat. With a spinning kick, Damian fell off the ring like a kite with a broken string.

"Still such a loser." Linyin stretched out her hand, which was still dripping with blood, and gestured with her thumb pointing down.

The silence lasted for three full seconds.

The referee mechanically raised the red flag: "The winner is the fighting-style Rinne."

The medical team's floating stretcher flew over the audience seats of the mythical beast department, and fragments of the mythical beast armor fell on the shoulders of several second-year students.

"Damian Horn's Fantasy Beast Armor was shattered by someone from the Fighting Department! Isn't he in the top ten of the Fantasy Beast Department?" Audience A clutched the school badge on his chest. "It seems like our school is doomed..."

"You just realized this?" Audience B rubbed his chest. "I originally thought it was just the Fighting type that was rubbish, but now it seems like our Fantasy Beast type is even more doomed..."

On the viewing platform of the Martial Arts Department, several students were fighting for the only old-fashioned telescope.

The girl with freckles near her nose was holding the telescope tightly in her hand. She adjusted the focus while chatting with the people around her, "I found that every time the boss makes a move, he will deliberately protect this position." She pointed to the left side of her waist.

"Have you forgotten? The boss took a Hellblade blow from Damian on his left side." The lip-pierced boy next to the freckled girl pounded his fist in anger. "It's too easy for a scum like Damian to just be kicked off the ring!"

"Eh? Boss seems to have seen us." The freckled girl jumped up and waved vigorously, "Boss, we are here!!!"

"No way? That far away?" the boy exclaimed. They were sitting in the corner of the farthest, darkest stand. "Let me see, let me see," he rejoined the fray for the telescope.

In the VIP seats in the same direction, a purple-haired girl wearing the Dark Night Orchid family crest covered her mouth and nose with a lace folding fan. "A lunatic with perfect S physical fitness paired with a mythical beast egg found on a street stall... Interesting."

At the same time, the tall girl on the ring brushed her short black hair behind her ears, and her whole temperament was like a sharp blade drawn from its sheath.

The girl saw this and lowered the folding fan in her hand a little more.

………………

Back in the dormitory, Linyin opened the top drawer of her desk as usual and saw the mythical beast egg still lying there quietly.

344 days. She examined it carefully and saw two more cracks than last week.

343 days ago, on her first day of school, she passed by a small fantasy beast supply store at the night market. The owner, wearing a gold chain, grabbed the egg with tweezers and threw it into the gutter right in front of her.

"This stuff about Fantasy Beast Hall channel goods, high-end goods, that's all bullshit." The shop owner spat, "It's a money-losing product."

With only twenty minutes left before curfew, she squatted by the ditch and watched for fifteen minutes. Under the streetlight, the eggshell, lying in the ditch, was a lifeless bluish-gray, with a few tiny cracks forming a star-like pattern.

Perhaps out of sympathy, she fished it out of the ditch.

Every day after that, she would gently tap the eggshell as instructed in the "Ethereal Beast Care Guide." The book said that healthy ethereal eggs would usually respond to "knocks," but this egg remained silent.

Fearing it would die completely, she took it to a veterinary clinic in the Mythical Beast Department for help. The kind young veterinarian ran all the tests he could and, half sympathetically and half regretfully, told her the egg was in poor health and might not survive.

Even if it survives, given that it has no elemental reactions, it is likely that it will not even reach the yellow level. The yellow level is the minimum level for a phantom beast to be able to conclude a contract and is the dividing line between phantom beasts and wild beasts.

Everyone's judgment is that it has no incubation value.

Carefully taking the phantom egg out of the drawer, Linyin pulled her own blanket over it and wrapped it in it. She had repeated this action so many times in the past year that it had become muscle memory.

The wound on his hand had not yet completely scabbed over. When he was wrapping himself in the blanket, a drop of blood rolled around on the phantom beast egg, and the next second it seeped in through the gap.

"Don't worry," Rinyin didn't notice that it "ate" her blood. She was talking to the mythical beast egg very seriously, as if the little thing inside could really understand her.

"As long as you survive, it's good."

She couldn't contract a phantom beast anyway.

And she is very strong even without a mythical beast.

At that moment, cheers rang out from outside the window. A student from the Mythical Beast Department was riding a newly hatched fire-maned colt across the sky, its tail trailing a meteor-like streak of light in the twilight.

Is there really no envy at all? Maybe.

Suddenly, two muffled sounds were heard inside the eggshell, as if something was hitting the eggshell from inside.

Golden liquid gushed out from the cracks, carrying a smell of rust.

The first thing that popped out was a tail - wet, with tufts of fur, and looking pitiful.

As the entire creature rolled to the ground, Linyin subconsciously moved back half a meter.

This thing has a triangular face, big ears, and is pitifully thin...

Well, like a cat that accidentally fell into the bathtub.

"...It seems the night market owner is right." Linyin wrapped it in a velvet blanket and held it up. "You look like a money-loser."

The kitten symbolically struggled twice, then obediently looked at her with its amber eyes open, "Meow."

………………

Fantasy Beast Veterinary Station.

The testing room was almost filled with precision instruments, and the flashing indicator lights were shaking the hopes and anxieties of the two people.

As each test was completed, reports were printed out.

"Still no elemental reaction. It looks... uh... like an ordinary cat with a long lifespan, a healthy stomach, and a bit of courage." The veterinarian handed the printed medical report to Linyin. "Please keep this. We don't have an electronic file, and we don't keep any backups here."

The kitten was surrounded by instruments, a lonely fur ball in the cold metal, looking particularly lonely.

The kind veterinarian comforted her, saying, "While it's rare for a common animal to hatch from a mythical beast egg, it's not unheard of. It's okay. Many people have gone through several mythical beasts before finding a compatible mythical beast partner."

Linyin was busy searching for health indicators among the numerous mythical beast ability indicators in the report, so her expression was rather serious. She knew the veterinarian had misunderstood, but she didn't explain further. She smiled and said, "Is there anything wrong with its health?"

"It's incredibly healthy," the veterinarian said, pointing to the "150 years" after the "potential lifespan prediction" on the report. "I'm not sure we can outlive it."
